SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: Apple-achian Treasure. What do you have on the drawing board next? Rumor has it that you have another book on the horizon called Vegan Baked Alaska. Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Vegan Baked Alaska is slated for release on June 21, 2019. Erin needs a little break from everything that has been happening in Bald Eagle Falls (you can only be subjected to so many murders, thefts, fires, and threats before it gets to be a bit much.) She ends up on a cruise to Alaska, far from civilization and criminal conspiracies, where the biggest problem should be that she wasn’t expecting it to be a vegan cruise.

“At least you won’t be stumbling over any bodies on an Alaskan cruise,” Mary Lou had said. But Mary Lou couldn’t have been more wrong.

Sparking an international incident wasn’t quite what Erin had planned for her relaxing vacation, but she is determined to prove that she saw what she did and to bring the culprits to justice.

After Vegan Baked Alaska, I have a couple of YA books coming out over the summer, followed by more books in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series.

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?

I’m not the best at Twitter, but I am learning a lot from the launch team for Do No Harm, so look for me to be more involved in the future! I have a nice little following, but I need to give them more content.

You do a lot of book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances. When and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

I am ramping up now for the writer’s conference in Calgary in August, When Words Collide. I have been going to this conference for several years now, and it has produced some great friendships, contacts, and follow-up events. I will probably speak on 3-4 panels. Between now and then, you never know what book clubs or opportunities may pop up. Watch the event feed on my website or my page on Facebook for upcoming events. Or join my mailing list.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

I actually do most of my own cover design. I usually work out a title and cover concept before I begin writing the book, which is a great way to inspire myself and give myself something to look at instead of staring blankly at the wall when I am working through a difficult chapter. I then tweak the cover after finishing the book, because sometimes things don’t turn out quite the way I expected. And I have refreshed some of my older covers as trends have changed or when a stand-alone book turns into a series and the original concept doesn’t work for a series.

It has been a fun and productive way for me to exercise my creativity visually as well as through story.

Several of your novels have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience for you?

I am thinking of getting some of my mystery series converted into audio books, which I think would be a good way to refresh the audience. I love the audio books that I have done so far, but they are in very small niches and don’t sell a lot.

My son said the other day that maybe if I put some of my books out on audio, he would listen to them. I pointed out that I already had books out on audio and now he has to think of a new excuse…

What is your primary genre? What has been your best marketing approach to this group?

Mystery/suspense is my primary genre right now. I started out mostly in YA contemporary, but there isn’t a big audience for YA contemporary without a big publisher doing the marketing. Mystery is easier to sell. I think covers are the biggest selling point, and in some cases, titles. When I told people I was writing Gluten-Free Murder, a lot of them said “I want to read that,” without knowing anything but the title. Good eye-catching, genre-appropriate covers are important. People won’t read your blurb or by the book if it doesn’t grab their attention.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

I have a newsletter list of around 14,000 people. Many of them have come from multi-author cross promotions, Bookfunnel offerings, or other book magnets. I put out a newsletter every Friday, publish at least two blogs a week, and try to post regularly on Facebook. I plan to do some revamped lead magnets on Facebook to help give my list a bit of a boost.

What is the objective for your newsletter? Do you try to build a list of readers? Do you see a carryover to the sales of your novels?

I want my newsletter subscribers to see me as a trusted source for new book suggestions, issues of the day, and of course my new releases and promos. My website views always go up the day my newsletter goes out, and with certain content, can jump from 100 views in a day to 1200 views. It definitely carries over to book sales as well. And I love to hear my readers’ thoughts on what I have written.

You have published many of your books in other languages. How is your audience abroad? Does marketing online help in this situation?

Marketing foreign language translations can be difficult, and sometimes when I try to run a promo, the price is not adjusted when it is supposed to be, which can cause difficulties. But I do get a trickle of sales of foreign language editions. I have one fellow who bought a Spanish language translation that was featured by a website (which I was unaware of) as part of his learning to speak Spanish. He loved it and made his wife read the English version it so that they could talk about the characters and world that had become so real to him. Then he gave the audio version to his daughter for a present. And of course, he read the rest of my Spanish language translations as well. So, a foreign language translation can have a big effect under the right circumstances!

I like the idea of Author bundles. You are a part of a novel collection called Do No Harm: Seventeen Medical Thrillers with other authors. What a great group of outstanding people. (Many have been interviewed on this blog). What was your main objective in bundling your works with other authors? What blogging, newsletter and social media promotions have you done to promote Do No Harm?

I wanted to reach a wider audience and possibly help launch a bestseller. We had a great author party on Facebook the other day, with each of the authors involved taking over for half an hour or an hour. I have done Facebook and Twitter spotlights, participate with Facebook reader group, and have been featuring a book from the bundle each week on my website and in my newsletter. I have a great landing page on my website that I am adding to each week.

Pursued by the Past
From the creator of the award-winning Ruby, Between the Cracks P.D. Workman reveals a haunting and provocative story of jealousy and obsession underscoring the importance of trusting your instincts and just what can happen if you don't.

A restraining order changed nothing. If anything, it caused things to escalate. If Vanna wants her life back, she will have to take things into her own hands.
