Author Description:
USA TODAY Bestselling author Terry Keys is an award winning novelist, songwriter, and poet. His first novel 'Chained Guilt' won the NIEA Thriller of the year award. Interview Excerpt

Next: Terror Lane finished by summer

Personal appearances: I will be doing a speaking engagement at a local high school in a few months. And so far my book signings have been at ½ Price Books in Webster, Texas.

Great covers: I strongly feel that you must have a good title and a great cover FIRST...If the cover doesn’t say READ ME NOW then it’s a no go for me.

Audio book: That was a fun process. I’d like to get the rest of my books converted. There is a huge audiobook audience that don’t really do much conventional reading.

Short stories: It allows me to introduce new characters and get a feel for how my readers like him or her. And new readers can nab one read it in 2-3 hours and decide if they want more from me.

Dead And Gone collection: And I’ve met some amazing people along the way. Some that I still keep in contact with. I put one together a few years ago and it was a lot of work… a lot more than I thought it would be going in. But we agreed that we would list it for free as a reader magnet.

Primary genre: My primary genre is Thriller’s. I use several promo sites like Bargain Booksy and Fussy Librarian. The months that I spend more on marketing I sell more books – it’s pretty simple.

Free books: Writing a novel and having it edited takes a lot of time and money. It’s not easy to decide I’m going to give this away for free. But it does work. It’s the reason HEB gives out little wine samples when you go grocery shopping. You have to understand that readers have a time budget. They can only read so much each day and week.

Reader list: There’s a way to sign up for my newsletter right from my webpage. And yes I do maintain a list. I’m almost at 30k and growing. I send out newsletters about 3 times a month. More when I’m releasing something new.

Reviews: I have an ARC team that reads my books and leaves reviews. But most of my reviews are purely organic. I also ask for them at the end of my books.

Author Description:
J. J. Cagney is the mystery/thriller pen name of USA Today bestselling author Alexa Padgett. Her debut mystery, A Pilgrimage of Death, was named to Kirkus Reviews’ 100 Best Books of 2018 and Goodreads Best Mysteries of the 2010s.

Cagney holds a bachelor’s in international marketing and spent part of her twenties as the marketing director for an elite sports management firm. And, yes, she did her requisite stint with a dotcom back in the early 2000s, first as a marketing coordinator and then as a content manager. She’s penned work for a variety of websites and magazines, and she worked as a literary agent for Irene Webb Literary.

She lives in northern New Mexico with her husband, children, about a million fish, and their Great Pyrenees, Ash. Kirkus Reviews called Cagney’s latest mystery, An Artifact of Death, “An exhilarating entry in a thoroughly enjoyable series.”

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: An Artifact of Death, the third full-length novel in the series, releases May 21, 2019. This one is more of a thriller than a murder-mystery.

Social media: I’m not on Twitter as much as I probably should be. I have to admit, I prefer the pictures of Instagram and the intimacy of my readers’ groups on Facebook. I post a lot more in those forums for those readers. That said, I think social media is essential today--at least for an author establishing his or her platform.

Personal appearances: I have a presentation for a creative group on May 9, and I’ve been asked to give two author talks later this year in and around the Santa Fe/Albuquerque area. When talks and signings become available, I will list them on www.jjcagney.com.

Covers: Emma Rider is a fabulous photographer and cover artist. She’s shot all my custom Cici covers. I saw the photo of the woman in the red coat (that’s on A Pilgrimage to Death), and I fell in love with it.

Dead And Gone collection: I’m very proud to be part of that boxed set, yes. This set was the brainchild of Tina Glasneck and Fiona Quinn. Fiona contacted me to see if I had a novel that fit the theme: serial killers. She explained the project, how some of the proceeds would go to save animals, and the bundle’s time frame. Our main objective is to grow our individual audiences through our collective readership.

Primary genre: I’m in the process of shifting my focus, hence the pen name J. J. Cagney. I will continue to write contemporary romances under the name Alexa Padgett, but I’m deeply enamored with mysteries and thrillers at the moment and want to pursue these genres to the best of my ability.

Time Management: I have a schedule but have to play it by ear. I usually take my kids to school, and then walk my Great Pyrenees, Ash. After that, I catch up on my social media, and then finally start writing about 10:00 a.m. I try to write 2,500 words (when I’m actively writing), and/or revise 30-50 pages per day if I’m in editing mode.

Getting reviews: I use both professional reviews and my reading audience. I guess I’ve mentioned on social media I’d like new reviewers, but I don’t spend a lot of time seeking bloggers. Maybe I should. I love bloggers. They are awesome to pursue their passion for books the way they do.

Pen name J. J. Cagney: It's been challenging to market both identities. I’m still learning what works best, and I think I will be for a while.

I have to admit, I was resistant at first to splitting my brand umbrella into two distinct pen names--I barely have time to meet my social media obligations for one pen name. But, as I mentioned before, I have distinct audiences for each genre, and there isn’t a lot of crossover for my books.

Angela Stevens
Author: Angela Stevens

Author Genre: Romance, Fantasy

Post with Profile + Interview: HBS Author's Spotlight

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Angela is British born but moved to the United States a decade ago. Always a keen traveler, she has enjoyed spending time living outside of her native country. She is an ex-teacher and the mother of two children. When empty nest syndrome threatened, Angela turned to writing novels to fill her growing free time. As her hobby grew she found storytelling began to fill her waking hours.

Her debut novel, Changing On The Fly grew out of her voracious appetite for reading. After one particularly momentous year, where she consumed over one hundred paper backs, Angela Stevens decided to attempt her own. The story is set in her local town and the setting for her love story was partly inspired by her passion for ice hockey. "I discovered ice hockey when I first moved to America. We went first to see an Anaheim Ducks game when I was visiting L.A. We all loved it so much when we came home we went to watch our local team. Now I'm a rabid Washington Capitals fan, and can often be found 'rocking the red' at the Verizon center supporting the Washington Capitals."

In Angela's stories, you will always find a hero to fall in love with and a heroine who will be worthy of his love. Her characters are three dimensional and down to earth. She writes with a strong voice and in a gritty style weaving tension and suspense throughout her narrative. Her characters come to life and whisk you away, whether into a romantic or fantasy setting. Which ever you chose, be prepared to laugh out loud, cry and fall in love.

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: Catching Adam is the last book in my Thrill Of The Chase series and will be live on April 30th. The series is set around a group of six siblings from New England and it follows five brothers and one sister as they find love.

Social media: To be honest, I am hopeless at social media, and especially don’t understand the attraction of twitter. I am embarrassed to say, I rarely use the twitter platform as I just have not figured it out. My preferred platform is Facebook, but again I struggle, like a lot of authors do, to be consistent.

Great covers: I make all the covers myself. In fact, I run a little side business making covers for other authors too, under my company the Cat’s Pyjamas. I first got into making my own because I was struggling to find what I was looking for. I couldn’t afford to commission images for my original Vargr Clan Trilogy.

Primary genre: When I started out writing it was fifty-fifty between the romance and fantasy, I literally alternated between the two. However, in the last eighteen months or so, I have almost exclusively written contemporary romance. The primary reason for this is that I found I had very little crossover between my Fantasy stories (which were not romance based) and my romance novels.

Free books: I have a love hate relationship with ‘FREE’. For several years I had book 1 of the Hockey Punk Series–then called Lemon Drops And Love–on permafree and over 25,000 copies were given away. Honestly, it didn’t seem to lead to sales on the other books. I think at the time that was down to a lot of mistakes on my side. I’m ashamed to say, the first edition of the book was badly edited and had an identity crises.

Reader lists are not working very well for me. I have a small number of subscribers and honestly, when I send out newsletters, I usually hear crickets or the sound of people unsubbing. If anyone knows the big secret out there, I am all ears!

Getting reviews: I have tried a number of ways of canvassing reviews, and all of them are really hard. Despite what people say, garnering organic reviews is almost impossible. I hear of many authors getting success through NetGalley but, to be honest, the prices for this service are astronomical. I used to use my reader list, but gradually found people were happy to take the books, and less happy to review. After a disappointing launch where I gave out around one hundred ARCs, and received less than five reviews.

After Hurricane Nina – a Hot Hunks-Steamy Romance Collection: Writing Nolan’s story for this was a whole lot of fun. I meant by ‘pooling resources’. It has always been my belief that authors are not competing against each other, instead we are all in this together. There are plenty of readers out there and most of them don’t just buy one book in their lifetime. Banding together with people who write in a similar style and genre can help you widen your net of readers.

Dianne Harman
Featured Book: Holly and the Coat Mystery

A review from the first book in the series, Holly and The Framed Friend: “If you grew up reading and loving Nancy Drew books, as I did, you will love this book. It brought me back to the days of childhood when I loved to curl up with Nancy and her friends as they solved mysteries… This is definitely a YA book for tween-agers, but the story is so delightful an adult is likely to find pleasure in reading it and remembering those years in the past when Nancy Drew was their favorite character. Kudos to Dianne Harman for creating this fun remembrance.”

This, the second book in the series, finds Holly and Wade trying to find the person who left a bottle of drugs in a coat they donated to the church. When Holly realizes that someone has scraped the prescription information off of the bottle, she’s concerned the person may be taking drugs.

It brings back memories of her mother and her drug addiction. Holly’s determined to find the person and reach out, wondering if her life would have been different if someone had reached out to her mother.

Author Description:
They say I'm as eclectic as my characters. I've been a singer, a composer, a calligrapher, a quilt artist, and an ESL/Reading teacher. But it is the world of writing historical fiction where I feel I've come "home." It's where I've received various awards and in addition, get to do my second love: Research.

When people talk about the news of the day, or when I listen to music, my overactive imagination likens the story to a similar kind of news in the past, which helps me conjure up scenes between characters I've yet to meet.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT S. R. MALLERY'S BOOKS:

Unexpected Gifts: "This is a book to be savored, as there is much information, as well as a captivating story about one family greatly affected by the events of their times. A thought-provoking read indeed!" -- Deborah Lloyd for Readers' Favorite

Sewing Can Be Dangerous and Other Small Threads This is a fascinating collection of anecdotes and historical snippets focusing on the timely art of sewing. - Emily-Jane Hills Orford for READER's FAVORITE

"Mallery is an extremely talented writer. Her style lures the reader; you actually become a part of her tapestry of expression." -- Blogger Melinda Hines, on Tales to Count On.

The Dolan Girls "was so enjoyable. At times rollicking, at times poignant, but always authentic, well researched and a beautifully told story. Highest recommendation. Five stars." -- B. Nelson, Top Amazon reviewer

Genteel Secrets "is a beautiful story which transports the reader in time. True to life historical fiction at its best, it's so much more than romance." - Riley, Top Amazon reviewer

Trouble in Glamour Town "is very historically accurate, portraying the real workings of the Hollywood sleaze, dishonesty and corruption happening at that time. S.R. Mallery is a gifted author who drew me into the story from the first word and kept me reading until the very last page... " - Trudi LoPreto for Readers' Favorite

Author Description:
I grew up on Long Island, in a pleasant, suburban town about 30 miles from New York City. I loved to read from a very early age and graduated from Columbia in 1974 with a degree in English. Not encouraged by the job prospects for English majors at the time, I went on to medical school at Northwestern, where in addition to my medical degree, I acquired a life-long love of deep dish pizza. I did a residency in Anesthesiology at Columbia Presbyterian and spent most of my career at Stony Brook, where I ultimately attained the academic rank of Professor and Vice-Chairman for Administration, Department of Anesthesiology.

When I was a child, I generally read five or more books per week, and even then, I had a dim sense that I could do at least as well as many of the stories that I was reading. Finally, around 1985, with a job and a family and my first personal computer, I began writing. I quickly discovered that it was not as easy as I had imagined, and like most beginning writers, it took me many years to produce a publishable work of fiction. My first novel, Edward Maret: A Novel of the Future, came out in 2001. It won the ASA Literary Prize for 2001 and received excellent reviews from Science Fiction Chronicle, InfinityPlus, Scavenger's Newsletter and many others.

My agent at the time urged me to write mysteries, as mysteries are supposed to have a larger readership and be easier to publish than science fiction. Since I have read almost as many mysteries as science fiction and fantasy, and since I enjoy them just as much, I had no objection to this plan. The Kurtz and Barent mystery series, Surgical Risk, The Anatomy Lesson and Seizure followed between 2002 and 2009. Reviewers have compared them favorably to Patricia Cornwell and Robin Cook and they've received positive reviews from The Midwest Book Review, Mystery Review Magazine, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Lady M's Mystery International, Mystery Scene Magazine, Library Journal and many others.

In 2014, I published a science fiction short story, "To the Ends of the Earth in the Deep Blue Sea" on Kindle for Amazon. Since then, I have made all of my previously published novels available for purchase on Kindle and now, in June, 2017 I am about to embark on a new venture. I will be publishing new novels on Kindle, the first of which is entitled The Cannibal's Feast. It's a science fiction story of corporate warfare in space. The next, coming out in early 2018, will be another science fiction novel tentatively entitled The City of Dust, a tale set on an abandoned world after the collapse of the First Interstellar Empire of Mankind.
