SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author
Congratulations on your book: One Minute to Midnight. What do you have on the drawing board next? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?
Thanks so much, James. The book has been out about a month now and the reaction from readers has been really positive. It was a long time between drinks in my Jack Emery series, so it was good to get this one out there.
Up next is the fourth book in my Mitch Herron series. It’s a cool, punchy thriller set on the island of Fiji. Herron finds himself caught in a civil war between two warring factions, but the more involved he gets the more he learns the true power behind the conflict.
It doesn’t have a title yet, but it’ll be out in the next few months.
You have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been? How did you build your following in your niche? Do you see a carry over to your writing success?
I was using Twitter a long time before I joined the book business. I probably don’t use Twitter, or most social media, as much as I should. Like anything else, it’s a time commitment and you need to be judicious about where you invest.
I find Twitter helps a little with book sales and Facebook helps a little more. I don’t think either are super important to me. The key to my relationship with readers is my mailing list, but the social platforms are just another way to connect. I talk to my readers wherever they’ll let me.
Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?
I try to get to one or two conventions or events per year, although I’ve been a bit quiet on that front in 2019. I’ve got nothing in the pipeline right now.
The best way for readers to keep in touch with me is on my mailing list (sign-up on www.stevepvincent.com)
, Facebook or Twitter (@stevepvincent).
You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?
Thanks. I’ve been really lucky to work with three great designers during my career so far: Stuart Bache, Johnny Xou and Amanda Pillar. Look them up if you’re in the market for a cover.
My process is to stay out of the way. I brief in the title and the high-level themes of the book, then let these talented people work their magic.
Most of your novels have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience for you?
Having the books in audio is great fun. Just like with the covers, I’ve been lucky to work with some amazing narrators: Jeff Kafer, Tom Jordan and Todd Menesses. There’s a few more fun ones in the pipe, as well.
It’s hard to say what impact the audio has had on ebook and paper sales, but there’s definitely a very strong market for audio. The up-front costs can be prohibitive, but some talented narrators are prepared to work on a royalty share basis, and it can end up being a fairly good earner for both.
I like the idea of Author bundles. You are a part of a novel collection called Dead And Gone. What was the impact on your other sales? What was the main objective of bundling your works with other mystery authors? How did you put something like that together? I love the idea of great value bundles for hungry readers. I may all my books available in series bundles, and I’ve had the pleasure to feature novels in two multi-author bundles as well – the limited-edition Murder and Mayhem collection and now the Dead and Gone collection.
I’ve been approached to be involved both times and it was an honour to be asked. Murder and Mayhem was a fantastic ride, but I’m enjoying Dead and Gone for different reasons – we’re donating a bunch of the profits to an animal shelter.
Just like with the cover designers, the audio narrators and even my editors, getting to team up with other authors is great fun. One day, I’d like to experiment with co-writing a novel or a series with another author, but I haven’t had the opportunity yet. It’s a lonely business and collaboration is fun.
What is your primary genre? What has been your best marketing approach to this group?
Thriller. The Herron series are action thrillers, while the Emery series are political / conspiracy thrillers. I also wrote a standalone psychological thriller – Eyes on You – and released it this year.
The vast bulk of my marketing occurs through my mailing list, which is where my established readers are, and through Facebook and Amazon ads, which helps me find new readers.
In the past, I’ve tinkered with social media, paid promotion and I’ve been lucky to have a few Bookbub Featured Deals, but I find the mailing list and the retailer ads are the bread and butter.
Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?
I do. There’s about 10,000 readers on the list, most of them reasonably active. I have sign-ups in my back matter and my website, and I run ad campaigns to encourage signups. I find organic growth is the best approach, although it’s slower.
Living in Australia creates a unique selling and marketing situation. Where is your biggest audience? Does marketing online help in this situation?
Not
really. The internet lets me reach all the places I need to. My biggest
readership is in the United States and I’ve never felt disconnected from them.
The mailing list, social media, paid advertising and word of mouth work just
fine for me. Probably the only disadvantage in living in a smaller market is
the limited number of events and signing opportunities.
What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?
I ask my readers to post reviews, but apart from that I let it sort itself out. Reviews are for readers, not authors, and I’ve never really put much time into seeking professional reviews.
