Chapter 1

Sunrise, a few weeks after Pam’s famous Memorial Day Picnic.

The beautiful house shimmered like a jewel dropped on the beach in the light of the rising sun, just visible peeking over the horizon. Almost one hundred years ago, the original builders of the house chose the location for two criteria; it was in a protected cove, sheltered from the worst winds and rain of the north Atlantic, and in the water, approximately twenty-five feet from the edge at low tide, a giant boulder stood, deposited by a retreating glacier 400 million years earlier that produced the most impossibly dramatic sprays of sea water. A rarity in the South Shore, rocky beaches are more prevalent in the north, making this boulder an exciting find.

Unfortunately, due to the storms of the past century, the cove no longer existed, the beach running in a straight line from canal inlet to inlet. The boulder, however, stood the test of time and continued to produce awe inspiring fountains, drawing attention especially during a storm out to sea.

In the recent past, the house had suffered through its share of loss; deaths, murders, divorce, betrayal, all linked by one common element, its serene yet unmistakably enduring inhabitant, Pam. Pamela Fabian Smith Zapelli Braddock lay in her luxurious bed, immobile in comfort, the sound of a dog snoring and another licking its paw her first awareness as she teetered on the edge of consciousness.

Opening impossibly blue eyes, she saw a soft, pink light seeping in above the extravagant drapery covering mullioned windows facing the beach. Pulling cotton sheets as fine as silk up under her chin, she closed her eyes, not ready to rise quite yet. Slowly, senses bombarded with the beginning of a new day roused her: the automatic coffee maker gurgling, the earthy smell of coffee brewing, a dog growling as its companion got too close to her on the bed.

“Oh, I guess this means I need to get up,” Pam moaned, one of the dog’s large paws coming down gently on her leg.

Stretching, the comfort of bed had such power over her. If it weren’t for the dogs, she’d stay there a while longer, maybe even fall back to sleep. But the dogs were wonderful alarm clocks, their needs made wasting time in the morning nearly impossible.

“Okay, okay, I’m up.”

After performing her beauty routine, she rarely dawdled. Taking a morning cup of coffee along, Pam donned a new straw hat, leashing up a sleek greyhound named Margaret and a slightly overweight black lab, Pete, who Pam insisted on calling Peter after Princess Margaret and Lord Peter Townsend, although she doubted anyone born after nineteen seventy sixty-five would get the reference.

Walking the dogs around a grassy area on the side of her garage for their morning toilet, the leashes were long enough to afford them some privacy. Afterward, she’d sit on a deck chair outside of the veranda and drink that first cup of coffee while the dogs surveyed their domain. When those activities were accomplished, they could really begin the day.

A sacrosanct routine, daily beachcombing often produced more than two tied bags of dog poo; Pam’s beach glass hunting yielded more finds this summer than ever before, and today was no exception. As she perused the sand at the edge of the surf, jackpot! A piece of red glass, among the rarest of all finds.

Squatting to sift through the area with her fingertips, she might unearth more glass, not wanting to miss one piece. She tried not to think of the origin of the glass; no longer remnants of an ancient shipwreck out to sea, they were more often the result of an accidental discharge from a trash barge headed to Freshkills Park, the garbage dump on Staten Island. By the time glass found its way to Pam, it would be as smooth as glass beaten down for a century, tumbled against the sand of Long Island beaches.

“Look at this.”

With outstretched hand she whispered to Margaret and Peter, who sat like Sphinx, waiting.

“Red glass. It must be an omen. It means good luck.”

Just then a dead fish rolling in the surf landed at Peter’s feet.

“Ugh! Don’t touch, you’ll get sick,” she shouted, leading them away from the water.

Obediently, the two dogs leapt away from the edge of the froth, loath to get wet, fish or no fish.

“Let’s go down to Ryan’s house,” she said, having abandoned the usage of Charlie’s house soon after Ryan had moved in. “Ryan will have dog bones for you.”

Continuing to search the sand for more treasure, the mile to former presidential candidate Charles Monroe’s palatial beachfront mansion took longer than usual by Pam and her two four-legged companions. As always, Ryan was waiting on the temporary deck with umbrella open as protection from the sun, coffee made, and with a box of generic dog treats.

“Hey!” he called out waving, happy to see Pam who hadn’t disappointed him yet by not showing up. Even on rainy days, she’d arrive, sometimes minus dogs, wearing a rain slicker.

In a dark depression, hitherto impossible to expunge, Ryan abandoned his heartsick, guilt-ridden mother in exchange for blameless Pam, who would sit for hours listening to him, often from early, sun-risen chats until long after lunch, sharing his memories of Jack. Kindly, he left out the worst perverse recollections, sparing her more traumas.

The stories of Jack that Ryan imparted reminded Pam of the person she knew; kind, generous, funny, intelligent, perfect. When the reminiscences got to be too much for them, they’d pack a simple lunch, usually cheese, crackers and bottled water, and walk the dogs further north on the beach, their destination a neutral city park, a place with no meaning for either of them.

No mention had yet been made of Pam’s daughter, Lisa, or of Jack’s other children: Alison Case, and a boy named Erick, possibly others who had not come forward. Ryan and Lisa had had a brief, heartbreaking affair which ended quickly after the discovery that Jack had fathered Ryan.

Developing an unusual ability, Pam cordoned off her relationship with Ryan from the rest of her life. The only person with whom she’d share that she’d spent time with him was with her husband, Randy Braddock, who found nothing problematic about the relationship expect for the possible pain it might cause Lisa. Because Pam knew the repercussions it could generate, the bond she had with Ryan would be kept under wraps.

Randy voiced his misgivings on Lisa’s behalf.

“I wonder if she could perceive your relationship with Ryan as a betrayal,” he’d cautioned.

“Gosh, I don’t know,” Pam replied in all honesty. “It doesn’t have anything to do with her at all. He’s never mentioned her name.”

“Leave it at that,” Randy said. “I certainly didn’t mean to raise any doubts.”

Neighbors, Ted and Jeanie thought her morning expeditions were simply for glass collecting, and never looked for her until the afternoon. It amused her that friends and family thought her above and beyond any clandestine undertakings.

Lingering long after the last cup of coffee on the first day of summer, Pam looked out to the horizon, a speck of a sailboat coming in closer as they chatted. Finally, it was close enough that she could see a figure put down the anchor. The inlet to the canal system further south, this part of the beach rarely saw boats so close to shore.

“Look!” she said, excited. “I wonder if a new sand bar cropped up with the last storm.”

“If they get out to swim, we might be able to tell,” he said, standing. “I’ll get the binoculars.”

The simple act of Ryan bringing out binoculars and spying on the unsuspecting sailors activated a pang of sadness in Pam, not longing for what was past, but regrets about the passing of time. The key was not to have regrets. Sighing, she took the offered spy glasses and focused on the occupants of the sailboat.

Average, unexciting people, no bikinis or nude women lounging around on deck, she chuckled for a moment, but didn’t share her inappropriate thoughts that it was something Jack would have done. He was a hopeless voyeur.

“I guess it’s time for me to get back to reality,” she said, standing up.

“Oh, don’t leave,” Ryan begged. “I hate it after you go. I’m lonelier than ever.”

“You need to get a job,” she replied, laughing. “Go back to Lang. I’ll tell Peter you want your job back.”

“What about Sandra?” he asked, curious.

“What about her? She’s happily married now. I hope you can act like an adult and leave her alone.”

“I’m crushed,” he said, but chuckling. “Do you think I’m hopeless?”

“Oh my God, no!” she said, hugging him, the dogs leashes whipping around in the wind. “You have more promise than any young man I know. You just need to get back to civilization. You’ve been here for a week, now it’s time to bite the bullet, as they say. Get back into the swing of things.”

“Okay, I guess I should. You’ll speak with Peter then?”

“Of course. As soon as I get home, I’ll put a word in for you.”

“God, I love you Pam,” he said, hugging her again.

Patting his cheek, she moved away to hook up the dogs’ leashes. “I need to take my own advice and get back to civilization,” she said. “I’ll never forget these past days with you. But we both need to find something useful to do.”

“What will you do?” he asked, worried for her.

“I might go see my husband. They’re supposed to be on hiatus from the show in a few days. Will you watch my dogs if I leave?”

“Yes, absolutely,” he said. “I’d be honored, unless I get a job, of course.”

Leading Margaret and Peter down the cedar steps to the sand, Pam looked out to sea again. The boat was still there, swinging gently side to side from its anchor.

“I wish I was on that boat,” she said. “It’s such a strange feeling. I never wanted to be on a boat before, but I’d love to be out there and looking in on us. I wonder what this place looks like.”

“Probably fabulous. They’re probably jealous, talking about us from their little boat.”

Standing side by side on the sand, Ryan put his arm around Pam’s shoulders, the pair like mother and son. “You’re very short,” he said, giggling.

“I used to be taller,” she said. “I’m shrinking.”

Bending down, he kissed her on the cheek. “Thanks for coming by,” Ryan said, feeling tender for Pam, wishing he was her son, that he’d been raised in her house.

His narcissistic propensity led him to believe that he could’ve made a difference in Jack’s behavior, that perhaps his goodness would have led Jack away from his perversity, forgetting their own perilous relationship, burying it deep in his memory so no words accidentally slipped out when he was with Pam. Shaking his head as if to clear it as he watched her walk off with the dogs, he knew that was ridiculous. The presence of another son wouldn’t have changed anything about Jack or the life he led with his family.

“Bye,” he called out again, suddenly overcome with sadness.

Kicking the sand, he went back to the house, fighting the urge to run to her and ask if he could move in. Instead, he’d do what she said, find a job, either returning to Lang, Smith and Romney, or something else, needing to prove he wasn’t going to be a leech. Working with Sandra wouldn’t be such a horrible thing and he’d deal with it to be back on Jack’s turf.

Don't You Forget About Me - Pam of Babylon Book Two
When charming, seemingly devoted Jack Smith dies, his wife and his two girlfriends are astonished to learn that they were not the only love of his life, and that, in fact, Jack was a rogue who was carrying on secret existences with other women. Shattered by grief and stunned by Jack's betrayals, these three women, Pam Smith, Marie Fabian, and Sandra Benson, find themselves suddenly thrown together. They could have despised one another, jealously guarding their private memories of their time with Jack and hating those they perceived to be their rivals, but instead, the women begin to realize there might be strength in numbers and in shared pain. Slowly, they begin to open their hearts to one another. They bind together to try to make sense of their lives and to try to heal the terrible shock.

But the more they learn about Jack and his nefarious past, the more they begin to question everything they thought they ever knew about him. Not only did Jack carelessly cheat on each of them, without thought to the harm he was causing, but the women are stunned to discover a secret of Jack that he never revealed.

As the women try to piece together the real life story of Jack, they begin to deal with their own lives differently, as well. They must deal with Jack's heartbroken mother, who knew nothing about her son's clandestine dealings in life. The tragedy also takes a toll on their working lives, and most of all it takes a toll on them, robbing them of sleep, hope, and even dreams. But with a sense of shared sisterhood, a little laughter, and a whole lot of determination, these brave women forge brave new lives that are full of promise.

The novel probes the difficulties in thinking that we can ever really know a person, even a loved one. All the women in Don't You Forget About Me wonder if they had been really and truly loved by Jack, or if he had simply played them for fools. They question their own blindness to his faults and how they allowed themselves to believe that they might have had it all, when what they had was really more of a dream. The book investigates modern social problems with grace and warmth. Infidelity, it uncovers, can do more than break hearts. In showing some of the worst things that can happen in relationships,it also teases us to imagine the best, a world in which loyalty, devotion and fidelity are prized. As the characters grow and change, they have the possibility for those things.

Don't You Forget About Me is a tale of love lost and then found again. A sequel to Pam of Babylon, Don't You Forget About Me can also be read all on its own. You will not like this book if many characters and lot of twists and turns is not your cup of tea.
