Kyle held his breath, as he pushed through the back door and went around to meet her by her car. Game on, buddy. Pull yourself together.

Yet a shockwave rippled through him at the sight of her. Black hair piled on her head in a messy, windblown bun. Short, sexy, red sundress. Her legs were bare. Pale yet gorgeous and toned. On her feet? High-top red sneakers with white laces.

Cassie dropped big, round sunglasses into place on her nose, and she grinned at him. “I made it.”

The huge dog—about the size of a pony—glanced his way but didn’t move. As if to say, “I am unimpressed by your appearance, human.”

“Yes, you made it.” He forced a pleasant smile though inside he was in full, freak out mode.

“This is Odin,” Cassie explained, still smiling. “Odin…say hello to Kyle.”

The Great Dane bared big white teeth on command in a ridiculous smile-esque maneuver. Yet still he didn’t budge from his seat.

“That’s his only trick,” Cassie offered with a chuckle. “We don’t ask much of each other.”

Kyle’s brain screamed, okay…time to fess up. “Cassie…before we go any further, there’s something I must confess. Please don’t get mad.”

Her smile evaporated. “Oh, that’s never good.”

“Hang on…it’s not good, but it’s not terrible, either.”

“Yet to be determined.” She crossed her arms and leveled a hard stare on him. “Spill it.”

“I may have…Okay, I definitely said…you’re my girlfriend.” Kyle cringed in anticipation of her reaction.

“You said what?” Her voice spiked.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”

“A death wish?” she accused with a scowl. “Who did you say this to?”

“Not many. Just my sister, Kat.” He swallowed hard and took a step back. “She told my grandmother.”

“No?” Her tone went dangerously low.

“…who then told my mother when she called to say she wasn’t sure if she was coming. Who, in turn, told Kendall, my younger sister. Who really isn’t coming, by the way. So, that part’s good.”

“Is it now, Kyle? Really?” Cassie demanded with an infuriated huff.

“Yeah…except Kat told her boyfriend, Ben. Now I’m done. I think. Maybe not. News travels fast on Last Chance Beach.”

Her dark eyes pinned him in place. “So…basically…you’re telling me everyone in your family and on this island thinks we’re a couple?”

Kyle gave her a small, shrugging wince. “Yeah…pretty much.”

Cassie glared at him. Lips pinched together. The tiny muscle alongside one eye quivering. “I cannot believe this.” She started pacing alongside her car. “Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve had a vacation? A little time off? A day, even, just for me?

This was a gift to me. A chance to unwind after all the work I’ve been drowning in.”

“I’m sorry. Again. I didn’t mean to screw up your vacation. I don’t know what came over me. It just happened. Kat was bragging about all the great things in her life. She literally walked in with an engagement ring the size of a bus on her finger. Gran was gushing. Ben had just proposed. She got a promotion. Ben is expanding his business, yada, yada…My brain blew a gasket.”

“So? Who cares, Kyle? It’s family. Not like you’re competing with anyone.”

Kyle dropped his head in shame. “You don’t know my family,” he admitted.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

First things first. Let’s start with what’s next. Rumor has it that you are working on another book. Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Big plans for 2021, James! I’m returning to my spooky roots, writing Book 2 of a four-part, generational, paranormal romance anthology. It’s hush-hush now, except I will tell you each book is set approximately a century apart in one gloriously gothic location.

I’ll also be heading back to the beach with a spicy new Last Chance Beach book. Plus, I’m planning a sweet Christmas in the charming town of Dickens. So, I guess you could say I’m writing through the seasons this year!

We are featuring her series: Time Travelers Journey Series.

You have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been? How did you build your following in your niche? Do you see a carry over to your writing success?

Social media is an ever-changing mystery to me. I simply try to share things I enjoy and that interest me. That means everything from haunted locations and folklore to Victorian ballgowns, and travel destinations. Dogs, cats, coffee, graveyards, and vampires fill out the rest.

I do believe it’s vital to support your fellow authors. Social media relationships are a big deal in our industry. I know some wonderful authors, and I ALWAYS try to share what’s new from them.

I like the idea of Author bundles. You are a part of several Short Story collections that have been featured on HBS Author’s Spotlight (See list below) What was the impact on your other sales? What was the main objective of bundling your works with other authors? How did you put something like that together?
Christmas Comes To
Last Chance Beach: Summer's End

My first experience collaborating with other authors began during this pandemic, and it gave a BIG BOOST to my writer’s soul! I love intertwining stories now, sharing characters and locations like Dickens and Last Chance Beach. It’s a super-fun, grown-up game of pretend, as authors develop characters, businesses, and romantic situations together. I also stepped out of my comfort zone with these group projects, learning to write short and sweet. My full-length romances are SPICY!

Short story collections have helped my other book sales, mostly by introducing new readers to the other side of me…the time travel/fantasy/paranormal side. Perhaps it has a lot to do with readers wanting to read different things at different times. Seasonal reading – I know I’m like that. When “sweet readers” are ready to get spooky and spicy, my other books are waiting for them. Crave the beach or a snowy holiday romance? I’ve got those books too.

Besides the Romance Gems, what other writer support groups do you belong to? Do they help with the writing, marketing and the publishing process?

Romance Gems has taught me SO MUCH and continues to do so! The other Gem authors are always quick to help with writing, marketing, and publishing questions. Honestly, I’ve been blessed to be able to reach out to them, as most are much more experienced than me. Yet other groups of author friends work the same way. We just don’t have a designated group name or hashtag, but everyone helps out.

We have had several of the Romance Gems in the Author’s Spotlight. What a group of outstanding people. I feel so strongly about this group. What is the main thing that you get out of this association? Why are the booksets so successful, besides having outstanding authors?

I adore the Romance Gems, and we even have a new member – USA Today bestselling author Amie Denman. Such a talented group of women! I can’t speak for everyone, but I’ve had a great time collaborating on our group projects. They’re fun, challenging, and they remind me why I’m so passionate about writing romance.

The daily blog posts are wonderful too. They showcase how unique our author’s voices and visions are, and they cover everything from What’s New and Writer Topics to Friends, and Family Issues. You'll even find Recipes and Pet Stories! MUCH MORE FUN than “buy my book!”

I would like to highlight one group post we do each month that your readers may not know about. It’s called Coffee & Conversation with the Romance Gems. It airs on the 26th each month with changing topics. Things like… “What was your best/worst date?” and “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to a character?” Great stuff! Here’s a link to the Romance Gems.

How do you start your book launch process for a new book? Give a brief outline of the steps you go through to get your book to market. What methods were the most successful?

I spend a lot of time promoting on social media and visiting reader blogs once the pre-order is available. Hard work, daily posts, and connecting with readers on a personal level whenever possible. Maybe I don’t have any of this figured out—that’s likely—but I do truly enjoy interacting with readers and learning what they love most about romance.

What is your primary genre? What has been your best marketing approach to this group?

My roots are in Time Travel Romance, which can also be considered Fantasy or Paranormal Romance. What’s the best marketing approach? Great question, James! I wish I knew. I will say my greatest writing inspiration comes from investigating the paranormal. Experiences with/and questions about haunted locations, ancient artifacts, and concepts like time slips are what fuel my writer’s imagination.

How do you manage your plots, characters and timelines to keep your stories going? Do you use any software to keep track of your books?

No software. I’m an old-school mess of scrap papers and notebooks. My writer’s brain is a labyrinth of twisting, turning plots. The Time Travel books are the hardest to write and keep track of, because there’s so much happening in different periods and locations. I’m writing both historic and contemporary romance then. BUT that’s the fun part, right?

I like your Authors News section on your website. It is a great source for readers to read the backstory about your novels. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, and take care of social media?

Time is one thing I wish I had more of. It's challenging to write while keeping up with the social and business side of things. I do my best work in the early morning, surrounded by three sleepy dogs, and fueled by copious amounts of iced coffee. Before I get distracted online.

What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?

I have sought out professional reviews for my traditionally published books. However, more often, I’ve come to rely on dedicated readers. There’s nothing better than talking romance novels with those who read them often!

Congratulations on your book: Reliant Service. What do you have on the drawing board next? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

I have a few projects in the works. 1) "Eternal Service" will be available in audio format in November. 2) A COLONY collection of the first three books will be available by December. 3) An alternate time travel novel (not in the COLONY series) will come out spring of 2016. A Vampire in Paris novellla will come out summer of 2016. 4) A COLONY Christmas novel will be out December 2016.

You have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been? How did you build your following in your niche? Do you see a carry over to your writing success?

I love Twitter. I follow bloggers in my genre and I like to post about freebies, other author's information, information about the craft or writing, and a lot of other great pieces of information. The secret to successfully tweeting is to give 90% information and only 10% self-promotion for your books. I connect with a lot of readers this way.

Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

Joining my newsletter is the best way of knowing where I am and what my next project is. You can sign up at http://newsletter.reginamorris.com. I'm scheduled to do a signing in San Antonio in February 2016 and a signing in Dallas in August 2016.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

Thanks! I do my own covers. The feedback I receive from my readers is that they like the White House with the couple on the cover, so each book will have that theme.

You have several great book trailers. (See links below.) They look very professional. Do you know how much impact they have had on your book’s success? Tell us about the process that you used to create your trailers?

I used animoto.com to create them. Overall I haven't connected with a lot of readers through my videos but people have told me that they are nice.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

I'm always giving away an ebook, a marketing paperback book, or something. My newsletter will have more information, but in general I am involved with at least one giveaway a month. My first novel is free, as is my marketing book "Power of Four" which is the first four chapters of the first for books. Giving away one book for free when there are four others in the series is working very well for me in terms of sales.

What has been your experience with book tours? Did they contribute to the increase of your book sales?

Yes and no. If you have the time to do your own book tour or to sign up with one that has a proven track record, you'll do well. If you're in a pinch and sign up with a company that no one has recommended to you, you might not see the results you want.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed and marketing your books. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, take care of the social media and maintain your blog?

I gave up sleeping a long time ago. My passion is writing and every spare minute I have I'm always trying to advance my next novel forward. I take a lot of writing classes too to keep on top of what readers are looking for in their novels.

I see you’re going to the Texas Book Festival in October. A book festival is a unique selling situation. How do you prepare for the festival? What goals do you have?

Unfortunately I have to cancel on the Texas Book Festival this year. My niece is getting married that weekend and I won't be in Austin for the book festival. Typically for any signing I order books ahead of time, make sure my phone is charged so I can take orders, and I arrive early to meet with the other authors and editors who are attending the events.
