Two days. That's all it's supposed to take.

But when Mylas suddenly discovers the truth, it isn't two days anymore.

Private investigator Mylas Grey is anticipating photographer Whitney Engel's visit to Washington.

He's been planning their itinerary, looking forward to spending time with her, and wondering if the spark between them will ignite into a roaring fire.

He isn't anticipating having to do a favor for Senator Allen.

However, the favor isn't supposed to take more than two days. All he has to do is take a trip up to Baltimore, spend a couple of days investigating a matter for another senator, and then he'll have the rest of the week to entertain Whitney.

But then . . .

He wasn't anticipating having an encounter with a psychopath.

When Mylas realizes the man he's investigating has a dark side to him, and he starts digging into his background a little further, it sets off a series of events that puts his own life, as well as Whitney's, in grave danger.

Which means . . .

He must rely on his faith to overcome the danger.

Mylas is a smart man, a highly skilled investigator, and a man of means. Yet, when he's confronted with a threat he never imagined, he must depend on his fledgling faith or he could lose everything.

Excerpt from Two Days Taken

Chapter 1

Monday, November 12
I had one thing on my mind today. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the one thing that should have been on my mind today.

I should have been thinking about Judge Amos Danfield.

I should have been thinking about my investigation into the judge, about the background check I needed to run on him, and about the interviews I needed to schedule.

Instead, I was thinking about Whitney Engel.

That wasn’t good.

I was the chief investigator for Senator Davis Allen, head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and tomorrow the senator expected me to give him my CAP on Judge Danfield. The CAP, or the Comprehensive Action Plan, was the basic outline my investigative team would follow when vetting the judge.

The President had nominated Judge Danfield to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, a minor judgeship when compared to a judge on the Supreme Court, but even so, any judge who went before the Judiciary Committee had to be properly vetted, and it was Senator Allen’s responsibility to make that happen.

He could have assigned that duty to another senator, but Senator Allen preferred to have his own investigative team do it.

I headed up Senator Allen’s investigative team, a team he called the R & I Group, which he said stood for Research and Investigations; although there were some people who insisted the R & I stood for Rumors and Innuendos.

I mostly agreed with the latter, because the moment the President announced a judicial pick, the rumors and innuendos about the candidate started circling around Capitol Hill like a flock of buzzards ready to pick the candidate apart.

It was my responsibility to shoot the pesky vultures out of the sky as quickly as possible.

On the other hand, if I discovered the rumors and innuendos were true, then it was my responsibility to provide Senator Allen with enough evidence to pick the candidate apart himself.

That was why I needed to stop thinking about Whitney Engel and stay focused on the vetting process for Judge Danfield—at least for the next three days.

On Thursday, I was taking two days off and spending a long weekend entertaining Whitney, who was flying to Washington, D.C., for her first visit to the capital.

I’d met Whitney a month ago when I was in Columbia, Missouri, looking into the disappearance of Senator Allen’s daughter, Lizzie, who had gone missing from her campus apartment.

Last night, when I was talking with Whitney on the phone and finalizing our plans for her visit, I tried not to sound too giddy about seeing her again, but I didn’t think I succeeded.

“Are you sure this is a convenient time for me to come for a visit?” she asked. “I’m really looking forward to it, but I don’t want my visit to interfere with your work, especially if there’s someone who needs your attention.”

“Are you kidding? When you get here, you’ll be the only person who needs my attention.”

She laughed a little. “Okay, Mylas, but if you need to go into the office while I’m there, I’ll understand.”

“I’m definitely planning to go into the office on Thursday, but that’s only because I plan to show you off to Senator Allen and his office staff, along with the members of my investigative team.”

“They sound like interesting people. I can’t wait to meet them.”

“Interesting? I guess you could say they’re interesting, but they’re also strange, weird, and eccentric.”

“Are you talking about Senator Allen’s staff?”

“No, I’m talking about my investigative team, the R & I Group.”

Author's Book List

One Day Gone - A Mylas Grey Mystery
Mylas Grey is a private investigator but don’t call him a private detective. That title belongs to his father—not to him.

Mylas is the Chief Investigator for Senator Davis Allen, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. His job is to do background investigations for the President’s judicial nominees, and that’s the only kind of investigation he’s interested in doing.

But then Lizzie, the Senator’s daughter, goes missing from her campus apartment.

And suddenly, just like that, Mylas finds himself back in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri, investigating her disappearance as if he were a run-of-the-mill private detective.

Nothing about the investigation is easy.

Discovering a motive isn’t easy . . .

Lizzie has a reputation for doing the unexpected, and she could have just left town for a few days without telling anyone. On the other hand, she could have done something stupid and gotten herself into serious trouble.

Staying focused on the investigation isn’t easy . . .

When Mylas meets a beautiful photographer at his brother’s church, and she offers to help him find Lizzie, he finds himself getting a little distracted from the investigation—well, maybe more than a little distracted.

Revisiting his past isn’t easy . . .

As Mylas is forced to spend time in his hometown, he begins to question his career choice, his rejection of Christianity, and his failed personal relationships.

Solving the mystery of Lizzie’s disappearance isn’t easy . . .

It gets even more complicated when Mylas learns Lizzie was researching an article for her campus newspaper about a judge with a secret past. Is the judge connected to Lizzie’s disappearance? Did Lizzie’s boyfriend play a role? What about Lizzie’s roommate?

So many suspects. So little time.
