By the time the judges put their heads together to confer, it was a done deal––innocent on all counts. Applause, foot stomps, and whistles followed, erupting to such a great din some of the women placed their hands over their ears.

But not Ellie. She was one of the first ones over to Nate and Jack’s table, shaking hands with them both and declaring loudly, “This is not over. I plan on doing further investigation.”

Brett pulled her aside. “Really, Ellie? Really?”

“Yes, Brett. Really.”

“Ellie,” Thomas said firmly. “I have other cases that need attending to. Now, stop this!”

“This is not good,” Pete said. He cleared his throat. “Beware of desp’rate steps. The darkest day will have pass’d away.”

“Desperate steps, indeed.” Turning, Ellie glowered at both Thomas and Brett. “Since when do injustices get passed over?”

Thomas shook his head. “Ellie, this is not the time or place. We’ll discuss it in the office tomorrow. Go home with your husband, for God’s sake!”

Back home, Brett was angry—and concise. “You’ve got to stop this tirade against Sinclair before it turns real ugly,” he snapped. “I’m going to the barn.”

The word “coward” filtered through her brain, but she decided not to say it. Yet after he stalked off, her mind whirled. Would Daniel be this scared of bullies, such as the Wyoming Stock Commission? Somehow, she doubted it. He’d probably take all of them on through the courts, putting down their excuses with his swift knowledge of the law. He’d probably—

The abrupt knock on their door followed by a horse’s fast gallop off thrust her back to the present with a start. Who could it be? She slowly opened the door. No one was there. But she could see in the far distance, the blurred black speck of a dark horse far away, heading for the hills. Shrugging, she was about to close the door when she happened to glance down.

She clapped a hand over her mouth to ward off a scream.

Author Description: They say I'm as eclectic as my characters. I've been a singer, a composer, a calligrapher, a quilt artist, and an ESL/Reading teacher. But it is the world of writing historical fiction where I feel I've come "home." It's where I've received various awards and in addition, get to do my second love: Research.

When people talk about the news of the day, or when I listen to music, my overactive imagination likens the story to a similar kind of news in the past, which helps me conjure up scenes between characters I've yet to meet.
