Interview Excerpt

NEXT: Hot Hunks-Steamy Romance Collection. It’s called “After Hurricane Nina” and each of our books has a hero with a resolution they need to make.

Great covers: To me that is the first thing that draws a reader in. I’m very hands on with my covers. I create a theme for the covers before I even start writing the series and I try to make sure that the people on the covers are similar to how I’m describing them in the story.

My primary genre is contemporary romance.

Time management is always an issue in life in general, but I’m a list girl. I make lists of things I need to do each day, week, month. I cross them off before I move to the next.

Giveaways: I try to mark a book free for 5 days several times a year. My goal is to get new readers to try one of my books and hopefully get hitched to it and buy the other books in the series.

Reader list: I’ve got a newsletter list and I try to send out 2 newsletters a month promoting my books, what is coming up, what projects I’m working on, and promoting books from other authors.

Great blog: My goal is to keep my readers coming back for more. To give them teasers of the books to come. I’m not quite sure how I find time to do it all. I guess I just love writing so much, that I make the time!

My objective of my newsletter is to keep my readers informed on what books are coming out, when there is a sale, or what new projects might be in the works.

Love, Christmas 2: My main objective with working with other authors is increasing my exposure and theirs. If we all help each other and promote, I’m put in front of their readers and they are put in front of mine.

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: I’m busily working on THE CATCH, River’s Sigh B & B, Book 7–and I’m totally caught up in it. If a reader is familiar with the series, pretty much all I have to say as a tease is . . . It’s Aisha’s story!

Social media: I have a love-hate relationship with social media and the Internet, in general. I love that Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. allow me to connect with kindred spirits all over the world and share my stories—and I am very grateful.

Covers: I love my covers too and can’t rave enough about—or express enough appreciation for—their designer, the fabulous Kim Killion and her amazing team at The Killion Group.

Audio books: WEDDING BANDS, River’s Sigh B & B, Book 1 was (is!) my first foray into the world of audio books—or, I should say, since I’m a long-time audio book addict, it’s my first foray into the world of having my books presented in audio. It was an exciting milestone.

Novellas: One to Keep was super fun to write and seems popular with readers, too. For some reason, Amazon resists showing that it belongs with the River’s Sigh B & B series... I definitely feel it generates sales for the rest of the series, much the same way any of the full-length books do.

Primary genre: I primarily write small-town contemporary romances these days—and the more I work in the genre, the more deeply I fall in love with it.

Giveaways: Not every book is for every person and sometimes a book you least expect to like turns out to be one you totally love, love, LOVE. And all that is just my long-winded way of saying I’m super happy to have Wedding Bands, Book 1 in River’s Sigh B & B as a perma-free introduction to the series.

Love, Christmas 2: I love author bundles too, for a variety of reasons. As a reader, they’re a fantastic way to discover new-to-me authors and possibly find brand-new favorites. As an author, it’s lovely to work on a group project with people who are enthusiastic, geeky and nerdy about the same things I am.

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: my current project is another box set, Unforgettable Thrills, which will be released on November 15th and is available on Amazon for pre-order. t’s a suspense romance collection by nine authors…

Social media is certainly important to authors, but at the end of the day it’s not a marketing tool per se, but a way to interact with readers. However, it gave me the chance to connect with other authors and build valuable friendships, improve my craft and learn countless tips on writing, marketing, and the publishing industry.

Great covers: I am a professional graphic designer and I always make my own covers. Sometimes it’s a curse, because I want to tell the story in one image and that’s why I’ve changed them countless times…

My primary genre has been romance, but I am working on my first thriller as we speak, and it will be the first of a series.

I have a list of readers, which I’m pleased to say is growing every month. I am active on social media and I have a website where readers can subscribe to my newsletter.

Time: To be honest, I never feel I have enough time, or that I do enough. I suppose I set too-high goals for myself sometimes, in order to be able to make a compromise. But truth be told, it’s very hard to juggle my writing and design careers and to feel I do enough of each one at the end of the day. It’s a constant struggle.

International author: USA is by far my biggest audience, and at this moment online marketing is my main tool. After more than five years in publishing, it’s still an ongoing learning curve, and I’m sure it will be always. All authors – indie or traditionally published – need to do their own marketing and have to keep up with the trends. Marketing my books is a full time job.

Love, Christmas 2: Our main goal was to reach the USA Today bestsellers list – which we did. I’m extremely proud and happy to say I am officially the first Romanian in history to become a USA Today bestselling author. In fact, this goal was the main thing that brought me into the Authors’ Billboard group.

Author Description:
USA Today best-selling author Dani Haviland semi-retired and moved from her beloved Alaska to Oregon to spend more time growing (and photographing) flowering plants and stunning trees, splitting her time between the organic and electronic, growing plants and cyber folks. Sharing is part of her personality, so creating books and photos to share all over the world makes her happy.

Her tenacious and perky attitude is reflected in many of her cyber children, whether they be a British lord stuck in 18th century North Carolina or a 6'7" time traveling 'fairy' who is out to champion anyone who is having a rough time dealing with difficult life situations.

Several series (The Fairies Saga; Arlie Undercover; Benji, the Early Years) and a few solo titles have evolved from her compulsion to write down the stories in her head that wouldn't stop growing.

Kick back and enjoy the diversity!

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: I just put together a rudimentary timeline for new book releases for 2019. I currently have six stories that are in different stages of completion. I decided to release them up as separate novellas rather than have them in one long book. This way, readers can have them sooner. I’m hoping the first two novellas will pop up in January and February of 2019.

Social media: I can see a direct relationship between sales and KENP (Amazon pages read on Kindle Unlimited) and how active I’ve been with Twitter and posting to Facebook groups.

Covers: My first covers were by Kim Killion. She asks authors to answer a questionnaire about theme, heat of story, tag lines, and has you submit an image or describe what you want on the cover. Many of the later novellas were done by Michele Hauf, the creator of the covers for the Sweet and Sassy box sets. She does a great job, too.

Novellas definitely help the sales of the full-length novels. Thanks, readers! My first novella was written for the Summer Heat box set. I

Primary genre: I started by writing historical fiction with time travel. I’m still very driven to write stories from the 1780s. I resisted being labeled as a romance writer until I realized that most of my stories did carry a romantic theme.

Giveaways: Whenever I run a free book promotion, sales increase for those books for at least a week afterwards. Also, other books in the series rise in sales, too. There is power in numbers and organization. Group giveaways is a great way to bring in new followers for newsletters…

Great blog: I want people to read, love, and share their appreciation of my stories with other folks. I can’t seem to convey to readers how dear and precious their reviews are. Even critical ones help.

The newsletter is to let the readers (and potential readers) know I’m a real person, help them find insight on some of my new releases, and also to find new authors. I can’t write enough to keep every reader busy all the time!

Love, Christmas 2: We love to find crossover readers! Someone who is an absolute fan of Mimi Barbour or Patricia Rosemoor might read one of the box sets we’re both in and discover they like my writing, too. Each author in the set had at least one newsletter that featured her novella

Author Description:
Joan Reeves is a New York Times and a USA Today bestselling author of Contemporary Romance. Her novels have been published in a half dozen languages, and her ebooks are available at most ebook sellers with audio book and print editions also available. Several of her books are available in French editions through her publisher in France.

When not writing romance--or nonfiction to share what she has learned in life--Joan divides her time between the hustle and bustle of Houston and a house in the Texas Hill Country. At their country house, Joan and her hero, her husband, attempt to grow wine grapes and fruit trees--all while fighting hordes of marauding gophers, skunks, deer, fox, and the occasional copperhead snake.

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: I realized I was creating a series of stories revolving around holidays plus each story introduced characters that then became the "stars" of their own story. I decided to formalize these short stories into a series with the thought of publishing all of them as a collection when I completed the 13 stories--Book 1 starts at Christmas and Book 13 ends the series and is also at Christmas. I'm working on making all of this not only make sense but also seem organic.

Social media: I love my Twitter followers. I used to name each new follower in a Friday tweet, but it grew so fast I couldn't keep up with it! I came to social media late. I don't know if social media presence has much effect on anyone's real success. I mean it's lovely to communicate with online friends, but I've never seen any hard evidence that this translates into very many sales.

Personal appearances: I do online interviews and speak at local writers' workshops and meetings. For years, I contributed to several RWA chapter newsletters. I blog nearly every day at SlingWords along with blogging once a month at Smart Girls Read Romance, Gems in the Attic, and Authors Billboard. I publish a subscription newsletter where readers can always find out what's going on in my life plus learn about Giveaways.

Covers: I'm definitely hands-on but only because I can afford to be. My daughter who is the chronic pain patient is a former high school art teacher with a degree in Graphic Design. She does all my book covers. In writing each book, I know the emotion and/or tone I want the reader to feel so I look for something that will visually convey that same emotion.

Audio books have been one of the best things about publishing because I adore audio books… I have plans to put the rest of my books on audio in 2019 as well as to finally get print editions of all of them available. Audio sales were huge! Like print or ebooks, they're largest when they first debut and fall off over time.

Primary genre: Contemporary Romance. Some of my books are romantic comedy, and some are romantic thrillers.

Giveaways: I usually give away a book each month to my mailing list subscribers. In 2019, I think I'm going to give away to my subscribers a chapter each month of a "big book" that my agent never could place several years ago. I do giveaways with my author friends for promotion purposes like at FB parties

Great blog: That's very kind of you, but SlingWords, my blog, is really my daily chat with visitors. It's not specifically aimed at writers because that's a small contingent of my readership. My only goal is to pass along information I've learned, and what I learn is usually from what's going on in my lif

Love, Christmas 2: I'll be honest, I haven't done as much as usual for Love, Christmas 2, just due to all the family emergencies. I created the video for this collection (view it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/v33btCbSn7k ).

Author Description:
Jen Talty is a USA Today Bestseller author of Romantic Suspense. Dark Water hit #10 in Barnes and Noble and her books have been in the top 50 on Amazon. Jennifer grew up in Rochester, New York. She recently retired from being a full-time hockey mom as her children hung up their skates. She and her husband still live in Rochester while her children travel globe. Jen was the co-founder of Cool Gus Publishing with NY Times Bestselling Author Bob Mayer.

Interview Excerpt

NEXT: I really love writing in the Brotherhood Protector series. Suspense is generally my go to genre, however, in early 2019 I have a Cozy Mystery novel coming out. Pre-Order should be up in by the end of the month and we are looking at an early February release. The title is: Trouble’s Bridal Caper.

Social media has changed drastically over the years. I jumped on twitter early, before it was the place to be, and for a long time, I really enjoyed it. Now it I often find it overwhelming at times. The biggest impact social media has had is given me a direct connection with my readers. I have a private Facebook group called The Talty Crew.

Great covers: I do ask for input from my readers and a few trusted authors. I try never to change the font of my name, though it is different with Trouble’s Bridal Caper since it was not independently published. I generally write the blurb for my book before I do anything.

Audio books: I just got a deal from Audible for the last five of my NY State Trooper series and I’m hoping that helps me crack that market. I’m still working on it!

Novellas: Yes. They have definitely increased the sales of my novels. And that works the other way. If a readers checks me out for the first time, and they really liked me, they are apt to go searching for my backlist titles. A novella is one of my writing styles.

Primary genre: My primary has been Romantic Suspense and Contemporary. However one of my bestselling series has been a fantasy/paranormal…

I have a newsletter. I constantly put the link up on social media. Anyone who joins my Newsletter gets a free book. Here sign up and download The Lighthouse! I don’t send out a lot of newsletters, but I will when I have a new release, something exciting to announce, or I will often promote another author.

Great blog: I’m also an empter nester with a husband who travels a lot for work. That allows me to work seven days a week. But it’s not all work to me. I love writing, so that part comes easy. I MAKE myself do the other stuff. I also have a huge support group.

Love, Christmas 2: This has been an exceptional experience. The authors in Love, Christmas 2 are amazing. I’m humbled by their talent and professionalism. Discoverability is the hardest thing for an author today. We can be talented, have lots of books, and great reviews, but if readers don’t find us, we don’t sell. Doing a collective work helps give authors discoverability.

Libby Fischer Hellmann
Featured Book: High Crimes

How do you solve a murder when there are 42,000 suspects? That’s the task facing Chicago PI Georgia Davis, hired to hunt down those behind the assassination of Resistance leader Dena Baldwin at a demonstration fourteen months after the 2016 election. The gunman, on a nearby hotel rooftop, dies within minutes of the shooting. As Georgia sifts through Dena’s 42,000 Facebook followers, she discovers that unknown enemies hiding behind fake profiles have infiltrated the group. She finds others who will do whatever it takes—including murder—to shield right-wing, wealthy elites. Threats and bruises have never frightened Georgia, but she’s side-swiped by the sudden reappearance of her mother, who abandoned her when she was a child. Can she survive a family crisis at the same time she pursues killers whose only goal is to protect themselves?

Author Description:
Libby Fischer Hellmann is a critically acclaimed crime writer loved by readers the world over for her compulsively readable thrillers and strong female characters. Her fast-paced crime fiction spans 14 novels and over 20 short stories. She has also edited a popular crime fiction anthology called Chicago Blues. Her newest work, "War, Spies, and Bobby Sox: Stories About World War Two At Home" was released in March, 2017, and promptly won the IPPY Silver Medal in the war/military category.

With critics describing her work as "masterful" and "meticulously researched", it's not hard to see why Libby's thrilling and richly varied crime novels have won numerous awards. Libby is exceptionally committed to her work, and in 2005-2006 she was the National President of Sisters in Crime, a 3,400+ member organization dedicated to strengthening the voice of female mystery writers.

Libby started out in broadcast news, beginning her career as an assistant film editor for NBC News in New York before moving back to DC to work with Robin MacNeil and Jim Lehrer at N-PACT, the public affairs production arm of PBS. Retrained as an assistant director when Watergate broke, Libby helped produce PBS's night-time broadcast of the hearings. She went on to work for public relations firm Burson-Marsteller in Chicago in 1978, where she stayed until she left to found Fischer Hellmann Communications in 1985.

Originally from Washington, D.C.--where, she says, "When you're sitting around the dinner table gossiping about the neighbors, you're talking politics"-- Libby earned a Masters Degree in Film Production from New York University and a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to writing, Libby writes and produces videos, and conducts speaker training programs in platform speaking, presentation skills, media training and crisis communications.

Libby's best-selling novels have won widespread acclaim, with her first novel, An Eye for Murder, nominated for several awards and described by Publisher's Weekly as "a masterful blend of politics, history, and suspense."

An Eye for Murder introduced Ellie Foreman, a video producer and single mother who went on to star in five more novels in a series described by Libby as "a cross between Desperate Housewives and 24." Libby's second series followed the Chicago PI Georgia Davis, a no-nonsense detective who has been featured in four books so far. In addition to her hugely popular series, Libby has also written four standalone thrillers in diverse settings and historical periods Through her "Revolution Trilogy," (Set the Night on Fire, A Bitter Veil, and Havana Lost) we meet young activists during the late Sixties, a young American woman who marries and moves to Tehran, and a female Mafia boss who chases power at the expense of love.

Author Description:
Aaron Paul Lazar is obsessed with writing. He's completed twenty-seven books to date, and has earned twenty literary book awards. He writes mysteries, suspense, love stories, and more. You'll usually find him writing his heart out in the early hours of the day - preferably in the dark, quiet hours when no one else is awake in his bustling household. Visit his website at www.lazarbooks.com to sign up for a free book and to learn about future deals.

Aaron Paul Lazar wasn't always a mystery writer. It wasn't until eight members of his family and friends died within five years that the urge to write became overwhelming. "When my father died, I lost it. I needed an outlet, and writing provided the kind of solace I couldn't find elsewhere."

Lazar created the Gus LeGarde mystery series, with the founding novel, DOUBLE FORTÉ, a chilling winter mystery set in the Genesee Valley of upstate New York. Like Lazar's father, protagonist Gus LeGarde is a classical music professor. Gus, a grandfather, gardener, chef, and nature lover, plays Chopin etudes to feed his soul and thinks of himself as a "Renaissance man caught in the 21st century." There are twelve books to date in this series.

The creation of the series lent Lazar the comfort he sought, yet in the process, a new passion was unleashed. Obsessed with his parallel universe, he now lives, breathes, and dreams about his characters, and has written TWELVE LeGarde mysteries in addition to four other series.

One day while rototilling his gardens, Lazar unearthed a green cat's eye marble, which prompted the paranormal mystery series featuring Sam Moore, retired country doctor and passionate gardener. The green marble, a powerful talisman, connects all three of the books in the series, whisking Sam back in time to uncover his brother's dreadful fate fifty years earlier. (THE DISAPPEARANCE OF BILLY MOORE, TERROR COMES KNOCKING, and FOR KEEPS)

Lazar's books feature breathless chase scenes, nasty villains, and taut suspense, but are also intensely human stories, replete with kids, dogs, horses, food, romance, and humor. The author calls them, "country mysteries," although reviewers have dubbed them "literary mysteries."

"It seems as though every image ever impressed upon my brain finds its way into my work. Whether it's the light dancing through stained-glass windows in a Parisian chapel, curly slate-green lichen covering a boulder at the edge of a pond in Maine, or hoarfrost dangling from a cherry tree branch in mid-winter, these images burrow into my memory cells. In time they bubble back, persistently itching, until they are poured out on the page."

In 2009, Kodak laid him off after 28 years of service, and during the year he had off (before he landed in his job with KB America) he had time to explore and reconnect with his environment. Little did he know that several trips to the Adirondack Mountains would reawaken his passion for that part of the country. A new romantic mystery series was started entitled Tall Pines Mysteries: FOR THE BIRDS, ESSENTIALLY YOURS, SANCTUARY, and BETRAYAL.

In between all the novels, Lazar published three short writing guides based on his many years of writing advice blogs, entitled WRITE LIKE THE WIND, volumes 1-3. These are available in eBook and audio book formats.

In his twenty-first book, Lazar has jumped genre. THE SEACREST: a love story, now winner of many literary awards, is poised to capture hearts across the globe. Book 1 in the Paines Creek Beach novels (set on Cape Cod), this also launched a series, and is followed by THE SEACROFT and THE SEADOG.

When the news was filled with stories about the girls captured for ten years by that monster in Cleveland (you know who he was...), Lazar was compelled to write a book to honor the women involved. Thus was born the Bittersweet Hollow romantic suspense series, featuring award-winning DEVIL'S LAKE, DEVIL'S CREEK, and DEVIL'S SPRING.

The author lives on a ridge overlooking the Genesee Valley in upstate New York with his wife, daughter Allison, two little grandsons, two dogs, and four cats. With a total of six grandkids now, he finds grandfathering to be one of the most precious and important times of life, and spends as much time as possible with Julian, Gordon, Isabella, Christopher, Luke, and Joey.

Lazar has been featured in many magazines and newspapers and has given dozens of radio interviews over the years.

Author Description:
They say I'm as eclectic as my characters. I've been a singer, a composer, a calligrapher, a quilt artist, and an ESL/Reading teacher. But it is the world of writing historical fiction where I feel I've come "home." It's where I've received various awards and in addition, get to do my second love: Research.

When people talk about the news of the day, or when I listen to music, my overactive imagination likens the story to a similar kind of news in the past, which helps me conjure up scenes between characters I've yet to meet.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT S. R. MALLERY'S BOOKS:

Unexpected Gifts: "This is a book to be savored, as there is much information, as well as a captivating story about one family greatly affected by the events of their times. A thought-provoking read indeed!" -- Deborah Lloyd for Readers' Favorite

Sewing Can Be Dangerous and Other Small Threads This is a fascinating collection of anecdotes and historical snippets focusing on the timely art of sewing. - Emily-Jane Hills Orford for READER's FAVORITE

"Mallery is an extremely talented writer. Her style lures the reader; you actually become a part of her tapestry of expression." -- Blogger Melinda Hines, on Tales to Count On.

The Dolan Girls "was so enjoyable. At times rollicking, at times poignant, but always authentic, well researched and a beautifully told story. Highest recommendation. Five stars." -- B. Nelson, Top Amazon reviewer

Genteel Secrets "is a beautiful story which transports the reader in time. True to life historical fiction at its best, it's so much more than romance." - Riley, Top Amazon reviewer

Trouble in Glamour Town "is very historically accurate, portraying the real workings of the Hollywood sleaze, dishonesty and corruption happening at that time. S.R. Mallery is a gifted author who drew me into the story from the first word and kept me reading until the very last page... " - Trudi LoPreto for Readers' Favorite

About USA Today Bestselling Author Stephanie Queen

Stephanie Queen is the USA Today bestselling author of the romantic detective series, Beachcomber Investigations. She lives in the stunning state of New Hampshire with her family, her cat, Kitty and her fun-loving friends. Besides going to the gym sporadically, Stephanie cooks and crochets and loves chocolate covered potato chips (yes, she should go to the gym more often).

She used to be a 9 to fiver working in downtown Boston, but has thrown her stylish suits and fancy heels in a closet and now hangs out in UConn t-shirts, jeans and sneakers. "If I could come back in another life as anything I wanted, I'd be a regency era heroine." (Not surprisingly) Regency romances are her favorite secret reads.
