HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of March 2016

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.

Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our March 2016 crew.

Author Description:
Inge-Lise Goss was born in Denmark, raised in Utah and graduated from the University of Utah, magna cum laude. She is a certified public accountant and worked in that field for over twenty years. Goss lives in the foothills of Red Rock Canyon with her husband and their dog, Bran. She spends most of her time in her den writing stories. There, with her muse by her side, her imagination has no boundaries, and her dreams come alive. When she's not pounding away on the keyboard, she can be found reading, rowing, or trying to perfect her golf game, which she fears is a lost cause.

Interview Excerpt

Next: Right now I’m working with an editor and putting some final touches on Compelled. That novel will be released sometime this summer. It’s about a hard-wired, no-nonsense New York police detective being forced by a dead woman’s spirit to find evidence that will free her wrongfully imprisoned husband for her murder in San Diego.

Social media: I’ve found social media is a valuable tool for promoting my books and obtaining new readers. Readers send me private messages through both Twitter and Facebook, which I’m always happy to receive. Without social media and my website, I wouldn’t be able to get the word out about my books.

Personal appearances: When my first book, The Tegen Cave, was published, I had a launch party in both Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The parties were a lot of fun, and I sold quite a few autographed books. Since I wanted to expand the number of people who could attend, my subsequent book launches have been scheduled through online promoters.

Covers: With the exception of The Cost of Crude book cover, my book covers have been designed by eBookLaunch.com. After I give them a basic theme, they designed it and send me drafts until I’m satisfied.

Author bundles: The publisher of Undiscovered Gems, An Anthology of Fiction Talent, sent out a request for submission. Since I was anxious to have a publication under my belt, I submitted a short story, “Planted Seed”—a dark tale. I was ecstatic when they selected it to be part of the anthology. Having a short story published helped spruce up my query letter. Shortly thereafter, my manuscript, The Tegen Cave, was picked up by a small publisher.

Support groups: The Las Vegas Writers group has a speaker each month, and I gain some valuable information from those presentations. I’m also a member of The Rainbow Critique Group. I am grateful to the members of that group for all of the knowledge I have gained through their critiques.

Giveaways: Within a few months of a new release, I provide five books for a Goodreads Giveaway. I have found that to be a very helpful way in getting the word out about my novels. Also, it generates more reviews on Goodreads, which drives more sales. During Facebook events, I have sometimes given books away as prizes. Some of the recipients write a review when they finish reading it. I love getting more reviews! So, giving away books through those events has been well worth the cost.

Reviews: I do seek professional reviews since they are highly regarded in the publishing industry, and some promotion sites won’t accept your book without a professional review.

Interview Excerpt

Next: It’s an Edwardian version of Four Weddings and a Funeral…but with several murders thrown in.

Personal appearances: We will both be appearing at Malice Domestic conference at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland from April 29-May 1, 2016. Readers should also check out D.E. Ireland on Facebook and Twitter, and at deireland.com.

Audio books: Because we’ve had great feedback from readers who loved the audiobook versions, we hope this has resulted in expanding our audience. That’s hard to gauge, though. At this time it seems most readers still prefer a print book or an iPad, Kindle, or Nook in their hands.

Authors working together: Friends since college, we have always supported each other personally and professionally. Although we’ve each had novels published on our own, we knew we’d eventually collaborate on something. When Meg came up with the idea of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins solving mysteries together, both of us realized it was the perfect team project…

Support groups: Sisters in Crime helps women authors in the mystery/thriller field which is still often dominated by men. D.E. Ireland is also one of eight “historical” authors in Sleuths in Time, which has a presence on Facebook.

Book launch process: Our publisher handles the book launch process by sending out multiple advance review copies. As soon as it’s available, we post the new cover on social media. We always participate in extensive blog tours within the first few weeks after publication to help spread the word. And we maintain a daily presence of Facebook and Twitter by posting and tweeting about our books, writing, and all things British.

Website: Anya Lipska
Twitter: @AnyaLipska

Facebook: Check Out Facebook

Post with Profile + Interview: HBS Author's Spotlight

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Anya Lipska is the pen name of a British crime writer married to a Pole. 'I chose Lipska because my real surname is impossible to pronounce...' she says. Living in East London with its big Polish community gave her the inspiration to create Kiszka, a Polish private detective/fixer, who came to the UK to escape communist rule in the Eighties, and is now in many ways a Londoner. A journalist by background, Anya was able to draw on contacts among murder detectives, pathologists and lawyers. 'Sometimes those research conversations in the pub get overheard and we get some very funny looks!'

The series quickly won critical acclaim leading to Anya being chosen for 'Queen of Crime' Val McDermid's New Blood panel at Theakstons Crime Festival - Europe's biggest crime writing event - in 2013. Originally trained as a journalist, Anya now writes and produces documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK, and international broadcasters like Discovery Channel. She's made programmes on everything from Leonardo da Vinci to plane crashes; mammoth cloning to Cleopatra's lost tomb. "I consider myself incredibly lucky to have such an interesting job," says Anya, 'It keeps me buzzing with ideas that I can work into my fiction, but nothing matches the excitement of creating characters and weaving plot."

Interview Excerpt

Next: I’m giving Kiszka and Kershaw a temporary rest while I pursue an idea that’s been ricocheting around my brain for a few months. I can’t say too much, but I will say that it’s once again set in a gritty part of London, many scenes take place in a mortuary, and there’s a babcia - a Polish grandmother – among the cast of characters.

Social media: I really enjoy twitter, much more, I must confess, than Facebook. I like its brevity, and the way you can really focus on the things you’re interested in. I let it grow organically, really, because I think if your twitter timeline is just a relentless juggernaut of self-promotion that can be really off-putting. It’s been a terrific way of engaging with readers right after they’ve read the books.

Covers: Credit for the overarching style must go to my publishers, the Friday Project, part of HarperCollins: they came up with the look for book 1 and continued it through the series. In the US, where I self-publish, I ran with that look but shot the covers myself – great fun!

Audio books: I have met people who have listened to the audio books and they’ve been very positive about the way the narrator brings them to life. I’m not (yet) an audio book listener but I can definitely see its appeal and I think there’s a huge untapped market there.

Support groups: Killer Women is a small, informal collective of female writers set up by Melanie McGrath and Louise Millar. Most of us live in and around the London area, so it’s easy for us to get together to drink and plan group activities. Its main aim is to supplement the publicity and marketing efforts of our publishers and to act as a contact point for literary festivals and events, but this year we’re excited to be launching our very own crime fiction festival in London in October.

Reader list: I’ve only very recently started a reader list on my website and am scratching my head about how to stay in touch with my twitter followers who are fans of the Kiszka and Kershaw series without sending them unwanted DMs. There’s so much to do on the publicity and marketing front that I sometimes despair of writing any actual, you know, books…!

BBC Drama acquired the rights to the Kiskza & Kershaw: I was absolutely thrilled when BBC Drama optioned the rights to the series, and when they commissioned the first script from a well-known TV screenwriter, but my excitement is tempered by caution, because the attrition rate between script-stage and production is pretty sobering. If it does happen, I’ll be toasting London’s wonderful Polish community with large quantities of wodka.

Author Description:
Hi. My name's Tim Vicary and I'm an author and a university teacher at the Norwegian Study Centre at the University of York, England. I've written three crime/legal thrillers in 'The Trials of Sarah Newby' series, and I'm currently writing a fourth. I've also written four historical novels, two children's books, and about twenty graded readers for foreign learners of English in the Oxford Bookworms series, published by Oxford University Press, two of which, Titanic and The Everest Story, won awards from the Extensive Reading Foundation in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

My legal thriller, A Fatal Verdict, was awarded a B.R.A.G Medallion for an outstanding independently published book in 2012, and in 2013 Bold Counsel won the Awesome Indies Seal of Approval.

I live in the English countryside, near York. When I'm not writing I like horse-riding, cycling, and swimming.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I am three quarters of the way through the fourth novel in the legal thriller series The Trials of Sarah Newby. If all goes well it should be published sometime between Easter and midsummer.

Social media: Two or three years ago I built up a reasonable following on Twitter, and at that time I think it helped to sell books. But after a while I got fed up with pestering people to buy, and gave up using Twitter entirely for over a year. Recently I have returned to it but now I find its main value is in making contact with interesting sites , like this one, which I wouldn't know about otherwise.

Covers: They are all created by my good friend Cathy helms at Avalon Graphics. It's a two way process - I give her such ideas as I have and she uses her artistic skills to interpret them.

Audio books: The audiobooks sell moderately well but it's hard to tell what effect they've had on sales of ebooks and paperbacks. It was fun to make them but extremely time-consuming, as I've described somewhere on my blog.

Bundles: Women of Courage is the only box set I've made so far. The idea of course was to offer readers a bargain - three books for the price of one and a half. Sadly my historical novels don't sell as well as the legal thrillers, which is a pity, because they're just as good if not better, in my humble unbiased opinion.

Giveaways: I've tried quite a few paid promotion sites, but most cost-effective by far is Bookbub. (I like Fussy Librarian too, but it's much smaller) Twice I've given away huge numbers fo free copies of A Game of Proof, the first book in The Trials of Sarah Newby series, and each time I've seen big increases in sales of the series, sustained over many weeks.

Reader list: …I've only just realised how important this is. My main focus over the coming year, apart from writing, is going to be to build this up, in every way possible.

Author Description:
J.A. Jance is the top 10 New York Times bestselling author of the Joanna Brady series; the J. P. Beaumont series; four interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family; and eight books featuring Ali Reynolds.

As a second-grader in Mrs. Spangler’s Greenway School class, I was introduced to Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz series. I read the first one and was hooked and knew, from that moment on, that I wanted to be a writer.

The third child in a large family, I was four years younger than my next older sister and four years older than the next younger sibling. Being both too young and too old left me alone in a crowd and helped turn me into an introspective reader and a top student. When I graduated from Bisbee High School in 1962, I received an academic scholarship that made me the first person in my family to attend a four year college. I graduated in 1966 with a degree in English and Secondary Education. In 1970 I received my M. Ed. In Library Science. I taught high school English at Tucson’s Pueblo High School for two years and was a K-12 librarian at Indian Oasis School District in Sells, Arizona for five years.

My ambitions to become a writer were frustrated in college and later, first because the professor who taught creative writing at the University of Arizona in those days thought girls "ought to be teachers or nurses" rather than writers. After he refused me admission to the program, I did the next best thing: I married a man who was allowed in the program that was closed to me. My first husband imitated Faulkner and Hemingway primarily by drinking too much and writing too little. Despite the fact that he was allowed in the creative writing program, he never had anything published either prior to or after his death from chronic alcoholism at age forty-two. That didn’t keep him from telling me, however, that there would be only one writer in our family, and he was it.

My husband made that statement in 1968 after I had received a favorable letter from an editor in New York who was interested in publishing a children’s story I had written. Because I was a newly wed wife who was interested in staying married, I put my writing ambitions on hold. Other than writing poetry in the dark of night when my husband was asleep (see After the Fire), I did nothing more about writing fiction until eleven years later when I was a single, divorced mother with two children and no child support as well as a full time job selling life insurance. My first three books were written between four a.m. and seven a.m.. At seven, I would wake my children and send them off to school. After that, I would get myself ready to go sell life insurance.

I started writing in the middle of March of 1982. The first book I wrote, a slightly fictionalized version of a series of murders that happened in Tucson in 1970, was never published. For one thing, it was twelve hundred pages long. Since I was never allowed in the creative writing classes, no one had ever told me there were some things I needed to leave out. For another, the editors who turned it down said that the parts that were real were totally unbelievable, and the parts that were fiction were fine. My agent finally sat me down and told me that she thought I was a better writer of fiction than I was of non-fiction. Why, she suggested, didn’t I try my hand at a novel?

The result of that conversation was the first Detective Beaumont book, Until Proven Guilty. Since 1985 when that was published, there have been 21 more Beau books. My work also includes 14 Joanna Brady books set in southeastern Arizona where I grew up, and seven Ali Reynolds books, set in Sedona, AZ. In addition there are four thrillers, starting with Hour of the Hunter and Kiss of the Bees, that reflect what I learned during the years when I was teaching on the Tohono O’Odham reservation west of Tucson, Arizona.

The week before Until Proven Guilty was published, I did a poetry reading of After the Fire at a widowed retreat sponsored by a group called WICS (Widowed Information Consultation Services) of King County. By June of 1985, it was five years after my divorce in 1980 and two years after my former husband’s death. I went to the retreat feeling as though I hadn’t quite had my ticket punched and didn’t deserve to be there. After all, the other people there were all still married when their spouses died. I was divorced. At the retreat I met a man whose wife had died of breast cancer two years to the day and within a matter of minutes of the time my husband died. We struck up a conversation based on that coincidence. Six months later, to the dismay of our five children, we told the kids they weren’t the Brady Bunch, but they'd do, and we got married. We now have four new in-laws as well as six grandchildren.

When my second husband and I first married, he supported all of us–his kids and mine as well as the two of us. It was a long time before my income from writing was anything more than fun money–the Improbable Cause trip to Walt Disney World; the Minor in Possession memorial powder room; the Payment in Kind memorial hot tub. Eventually, however, the worm turned. My husband was able to retire at age 54 and took up golf and oil painting.

One of the wonderful things about being a writer is that everything–even the bad stuff–is usable. The eighteen years I spent while married to an alcoholic have helped shape the experience and character of Detective J. P. Beaumont. My experiences as a single parent have gone into the background for Joanna Brady–including her first tentative steps toward a new life after the devastation of losing her husband in Desert Heat. And then there’s the evil creative writing professor in Hour of the Hunter and Kiss of the Bees, but that’s another story.

Another wonderful part of being a writer is hearing from fans. I learned on the reservation that the ancient, sacred charge of the storyteller is to beguile the time. I’m thrilled when I hear that someone has used my books to get through some particularly difficult illness either as a patient or as they sit on the sidelines while someone they love is terribly ill. It gratifies me to know that by immersing themselves in my stories, people are able to set their own lives aside and live and walk in someone else’s shoes. It tells me I’m doing a good job at the best job in the world.

Detached from the world, how are seven psychopaths going to save it?

Phoenix is one of the most populated cities in America…but not for long. With a mysterious sickness spreading through the streets, two things are becoming very clear: there’s no cure, and it doesn’t necessarily kill you.

Instead, the so-called “Infecteds” have become a living plague, killing and eating everyone they come into contact with. Chaos is spreading, and no one is safe.

No one, that is, except for a group of psychos.

Somehow unaffected by the disease—and with promises of clemency for their monstrous pasts—a group of seven is sent downtown to hopefully find the cause of the disease…and therefore a cure. But when the asylum is the size of a city, it no longer matters who is running things.

Not when everyone is running for their lives.

Author Description:
Marsheila (Marcy) Rockwell was born [redacted] years ago in America's Last, Best Place. A descendant of kings, pilgrims, Ojibwe hunters and possibly a witch or two, she spent the first few years of her life frolicking gleefully in a large backyard that is now part of one of the nation's largest Superfund sites. Perhaps that explains her early penchant for fantasy and horror - the first book she ever read (at the tender age of three) was Frank L. Baum's "Ozma of Oz."

Marcy sold her first short story to Marion Zimmer Bradley while in college and her first novel to Wizards of the Coast in 2005. She now lives in the desert in the shadow of an improbably green mountain surrounded by her children, her vast collections of Wonder Woman/Girl figures, and far too many books.

Author Description:
AAD DEBUT AUTHOR OF THE YEAR NOMINEE...

My name is Deena Remiel, and I am an author of paranormal romance, urban and dark fantasy, and romantic suspense. I also teach language arts to middle schoolers. I belong to RWA national and the Desert Rose Chapter of RWA, where there are outstanding people writing fabulous stories.

I grew up in Philadelphia, home of the most amazing cheese steaks, soft pretzels, oh and the Liberty Bell. My husband and I began our own family in New Jersey, and just a few years ago, Arizona called to my spirit and tempted my husband with much better weather! We moved our family, and the rest is history, or the present, as the case may be!

These are a few of my favorite things: writing and reading of course, chocolate, music with lyrics or melodies that speak to me, soaking baths, singing in the shower, dancing with my buds, romantic dancing with my hubbie, scrapbooking, watching my girls enjoy what they love to do, and laughing at jokes. Visit my website for the latest news and available books: www.deenaremiel.com.

Author Description:
I write about people and relationships. The people may not be from Earth, or even humans at all. The relationships may be adversely effected by multi-spacial anomalies. Sci-fi.

Seriously though, my hope is to meet the reader halfway, where their imagination and creativity can merge with the characters, locations and all the little details that bring the fictional story to life. When you get the chance to enter into one of my stories, you should enjoy yourself. Hang out with the Synthetics, take a nap upside down from a Dreamish conduit, jump into a Blackball and see what planet you end up on. Or find yourself a hormonal teenager in a family of scaly Eutherids.

My own family is made up of people and creatures that have volunteered to live our lives together. Not really sure who adopted who, but it works for us. Normal? The treadmill is covered in dust and junk mail - I guess that's normal. But the rest of it's as goofy and fun and messed up as anyone else. Wonderfully abnormal, if you please! I get irked with smartphones, and having to download a fuel-map into my motorcycle's CPU. I just want to look at the Milky Way from my back yard, read every book I can, and chase around the house with the kid and the saluki.

Thanks so much for buying one of my books. You could've spent your entertainment budget on so many other things. When I'm writing, I don't forget that.

Sandy Wright is an award-winning author of paranormal and romantic suspense novels, poetry and short fiction. Her newest novel is Song of the Ancients, set in the magical red rocks of Sedona, Arizona.

Born and raised in the midwest, Sandy lives in Arizona with her husband, college-age son, and three huge black cats, including Shadow Moon, who is also a character in her first book. The most recent addition to the household is Teak, a laid-back (yeah, right) Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix puppy. The cats despise him, of course.

Best-selling author, P.C. Zick describes herself as a storyteller no matter what she writes. And she writes in a variety of genres, including romance, contemporary fiction, and nonfiction. She's won various awards for her essays, columns, editorials, articles, and fiction.

Many of her novels contain stories of Florida and its people and environment, which she credits as giving her a rich base for her storytelling. "Florida's quirky and abundant wildlife - both human and animal - supply my fiction with tales almost too weird to be believable." Her Behind the Love trilogy - contemporary romance - is also set in Florida, but she's now working on a series set in the Smoky Mountains.

Her fiction contains the elements most dear to her heart, ranging from love to the environment. All of her novels contain elements of romance with strong female characters and descriptive settings. She believes in living lightly upon this earth with love, laughter, and passion, and through her fiction she imparts this philosophy in an entertaining manner with an obvious love for her characters, plot, and themes.

Author Description:
Jade Kerrion, an award-winning author, got her start in fan fiction. She developed a loyal reader base with her fan fiction series based on the MMORPG Guild Wars. She was accused of keeping her readers up at night, distracting them from work, housework, homework, and (far worse), from actually playing Guild Wars.

And then she wondered why just screw up the time management skills of gamers? Why not aspire to screw everyone else up too? So here she is, writing books that aspire to keep you from doing anything else useful with your time. She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with her wonderfully supportive husband and her two young sons, Saint and Angel, (no, those aren't their real names, but they are like saints and angels, except when they're not.)
