HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of February 2016

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.

Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our February 2016 crew.

Author Description:
New York Times and USA Today international bestselling author, Toni Anderson, writes dark, gritty Romantic Suspense novels that have hit #1 in Barnes & Noble's Nook store, the Top 10 in Amazon and Kobo stores, and the Top 50 in iBooks. Her novels have won many awards. ?

A former Marine Biologist from Britain, she inexplicably ended up in the geographical center of North America, about as far from the ocean as it is possible to get. She now lives in the Canadian prairies with her Irish husband and two children and spends most of her time complaining about the weather. Toni has no explanation for her oft-times dark imagination, and only hopes the romance makes up for it. She's addicted to reading, dogs, tea, and chocolate. ?? Interview Excerpt

Next: Up next is book six in the COLD JUSTICE SERIES titled COLD HEARTED. I’ve been pretty close-mouthed about this project, a little nervous about getting it right. Needless to say it features an FBI agent from Lincoln Frazer’s BAU team, a romantic conflict, and several dead bodies. I’m hoping for a May release date.

Social media: Basically I’ve built my readership one person at a time. I’m a relatively slow writer so the main thing for me has been sticking to one genre—Romantic Suspense. Before Facebook I used to frequent a lot of yahoo groups/loops and meet readers during online chats. Facebook and Twitter make it much easier to connect with people and I love that. Nowadays social media plays a significant role in my book launches but it’s such a fluid thing—what works for one release sometimes falls flat for another. The one thing I like to do is get people to sign up for my mailing list so they never miss a sale or a new release.

Appearances: My next event is the Reader & Author Get Together
- West Chester, OH - June 9-12, 2016 presented by Lori Foster. It is billed as ‘A Friendly Gathering of Romance Lovers’.

Covers: I have used a few different designers and I’m happy with the results. For my COLD JUSTICE SERIES books I told my designer (Syd Gill) I wanted some sort of banner like thing and really strong branding across the series. She came up with the idea of the jewel colors and using a setting/theme image on the bottom and then we use the top to try and evoke a feeling of either a thriller/mystery/suspense story with a strong romance.

Audiobooks is a whole different market and one that is growing in popularity, so yes, I believe it has helped sell my books in other formats.

Short is not my preferred style of writing, I prefer big stories with complex plots. I wrote the novella (HER LAST CHANCE) because during the editing process of HER SANCTUARY I deleted an entire love story between two secondary characters. While I couldn’t fit an entire novel around these characters, I could give them a HEA with their own novella and give readers an update on life on the ranch that they’d been demanding. As for reading on smart phones…it is definitely happening more and more. Frankly, I’m just happy that people are reading!

Author bundles help cross promotion between authors of similar types of books. The really cool thing about this DANGEROUS CONNECTIONS box set was that we wrote new epilogues for each book that connected the different author’s Romantic Suspense worlds together. It was a very cool idea and process.

Bundling serves two purposes. One, avid fans get the chance to buy multiple books at a cheaper price than the individual books sell for and, secondly, some readers actively prefer the box set format.

My newsletter is where I inform my readers about new releases and sales. So, yes, I see carryover sales. I’m happy when people sign up as it gives me a direct link to readers, which is every author’s dream.

Author Description:
Jacquie writes Romantic Suspense w/Attitude.

Her heroes are tough, alpha males who know what they want. That is until they get gob-smacked by heroines who are strong, contemporary women willing to show them that what they really need is love.

She’s been blessed with a long, happy marriage and enjoys writing romance novels that end with happy-ever-afters.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I’m actually working on two books right now. One is a Wounded Hearts novella titled, Summer Lovin’ and will release May 26 in a multi-author boxed set called Summer Heat.

Social media: I’ve made a lot of great connections, such as yourself, thanks to social media. I joined a couple of writer groups, The Authors’ Billboard and Sisters of Suspense, both of these have helped enormously with cross-promoting and building relationships within the reading-writing community.

Events: I’ve done a couple of local book signings and many online interviews. The best place to keep up with upcoming events is on my web site: http://jacqbiggar.com

Covers: When I finished my first book, and knowing how important a great cover is, I did research to find some of the best in the business within my price range. I found The Killion Group.

Book trailers: I think readers are very visual, so a good trailer can absolutely impact sales. Also, it’s another way to promo your book, which is great. I used the same basic idea as above. I researched quality companies and went from there.

Novella: I did the Sheriff because fans were asking for Jack Garrett’s story, a great feeling, by the way! This was my first novella but I gotta say, I like ‘em. Done properly, you still get a full story, it just loses that saggy middle, that most writers struggle with anyway.

Author bundles: Dangerous Encounters has been a positive experience all around. I’ve made new friends, new fans, and best of all, the cross-promotion has helped my other books get recognized. I met the others in the set through a Facebook group.

Free books: The best thing about giving your books away free is that it allows new readers to find you and possibly buy other books your written. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have a backlist.

Book Bites: There are actually four Book Bites anthologies. They’re all teaser chapters from members of The Authors’ Billboard. They’re meant to create interest in our books and to use for promotional purposes.

Author Description:
Life is an extravaganza of unpredictable dimension and proportion: figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu, to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University. A GED for my husband, and many more years of education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. I'm still married to the same sweet guy, and live with him in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing fiction, I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese kitties.

I write the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series, set here in and around Palm Springs, CA. As Jessica Huntington, amateur sleuth and calamity magnet, will tell you, the Sonoran Desert is a beautiful setting in which to ponder life's mysteries while enjoying the delights of the desert resort communities. A Dead Husband, Book 1, and A Dead Sister, Book 2, out now. Book 3, A DEAD DAUGHTER out soon. Look for Book 4, A DEAD MOTHER, in 2015. ALSO OUT NOW: LOVE, A FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND. This sweet romance is narrated by Jessica Huntington as she shares her friend, Bernadette's, tale of love, loss, and hope…"a real happily ever after story."

Interview Excerpt

Next: A DEAD MOTHER, book 4 in the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery Series will be out in 2016.

Social media: I have met the most interesting group of people on twitter. When I published A DEAD HUSBAND at the end of 2013 I didn’t even have a Twitter account, so it has been rather surprising to be connected more than 20, 000 Twitter pals, tweeps, a couple years later. Many of my pals are writers, bloggers and avid readers. Others are involved with books promoting or publishing. What truly amazing is how diverse a group of people have connected with me from all around the world.

Appearances: I have done live web-based radio shows, but haven’t done personal appearances. I have also done a number of Facebook events ‘live.’ I post information about new releases, giveaways, sales, awards—things like that on my website and blog. I use Mail Chimp to email notifications to subscribers about news.

Covers: I have done the book covers myself—using stock photos and photo shop. I use the cover creation process as a way to inspire myself as I’m writing a new book. By the time I have a book written I have produced a couple dozen mock ups of the cover. I have involved readers in helping me pick one when I’ve narrowed ideas down to 2 or 3 favorites.

Support groups: I have a number of affiliations with organized writing groups that offer different kinds of services or supports. Sisters-In-Crime is a national organization that provides updates throughout the year about developments in the publishing industry as well as information specific to mystery writing. They provide a wide range of resources for authors including an annual conference.

Free books: I just started using giveaways to attract readers to my books. I have found the response to be amazing. The main challenge in doing a giveaway is getting the word out about it in a timely fashion. I use Twitter and Facebook as well as my website and blog to invite folks to enter the giveaways. I also like Rafflecopter as a place to ‘host’ giveaways.

Reader list: I do have a list of subscribers to my website and blog. I use that list to send out news about books, giveaways, new blog posts, recipes, etc. I have just begun to focus on building that list and am trying to figure out the best way to do that. Right now I’m focusing on giveaways to draw in new subscribers.

Blogging: The blog has been a way to talk about issues related to my writing as well as a forum to feature my books, giveaways and announcements about work in progress. My blog posts focus on broader issues like mystery writing or writing, in general. I have also used my blog to feature other authors and their books, current authors as well as masters like Agatha Christie.

Reviews are hard to come by, that’s for sure. Estimates are that less than one percent of readers post reviews. That has been my experience. I haven’t sought reviews from professional outlets, but have received reviews from book promotion and blogger sites. My reviews mostly come from mystery readers.

What’s Cooking: I used to be a chef, so I still have an interest in cooking and that’s one reason food plays a role in my books. I’ve also written a blog post on the fact that cozy mysteries and food just seem to go together. That seems to be true even if you’re not writing culinary cozies, per se.

Author Description:
Author of the Zoe Donovan cozy Mystery Series, Tj Jensen Paradise Lake Mystery series, Whales and Tails Cozy Mystery Series, and Seacliff High Mystery Series.

Come for the murder, stay for the romance.

Kathi lives in the beautiful alpine community of Lake Tahoe with her husband Ken and dog Echo. When she's not writing she enjoys hanging out on the beach with her children and grandchildren. During the summer she enjoys hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, wakeboarding, and sunset cruises on the lake. During the winter she enjoys cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and curling up by a fire with a good book.

Kathi uses her mountain home as inspiration for her books, all which include appearances by the wildlife she shares her life with.

Interview Excerpt

Next: Zimmerman Academy is a spinoff of the Zoe Donovan Series. The novellas are told from the point of view of the minor characters of the Zoe Donovan Series.

I believe that social media has made ALL the difference. I made a point to get to know both my readers and bloggers on a personal level. I feel that I really am friends with these people and I share their ups and downs as they navigate their life. People also like the fact that I give a TON of stuff away.

Appearances: I have a page on my website www.kathidaley.com dedicated to my appearances. I also keep everyone up to speed with updates in my newsletter – The Daley Weekly.

Covers: I design all my own covers but I have a wonderful friend, Jessica Fischer, who makes them pretty. Basically I come up with the concept and find the graphics I want to use. I then do a rough mockup myself which I send to Jessica to layer and smooth out. And yes, readers do help.

Novellas: I definitely think that novellas have a place in my overall portfolio. I personally enjoy reading a shorter story if I have an hour or so that I can devote to a book but I know that I most likely won’t get back to it for a week or more due to my schedule.

Bundles: My main objective to bundling is for reader convenience. I’ve always done the sets as a cost saving measure for my readers so I’m not really sure how book sales would differ if I didn’t do the sets.

Free books: I give away a lot of books. I have contests going on all the time, plus I run freebies for select books every few months. I have around a thousand members in my birthday club and each and every member can request a free book on their birthday. I also give away a lot of swag.

Post with Profile + Interview: HBS Author's Spotlight

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Emma Jameson is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Lord & Lady Hetheridge cozy mystery series. Book #1, ICE BLUE, Book #2, BLUE MURDER, and Book #3, SOMETHING BLUE, are available now.

She is also the author of MARRIAGE CAN BE MURDER, the first book in a new series set in wartime Cornwall. She is at work on Lord & Lady Hetheridge book #4, BLACK & BLUE, and also DIVORCE CAN BE DEADLY, the second mystery starring Dr. Benjamin Bones.

Interview Excerpt

Next: First, let me say, I love writing cozy mysteries, and have no desire to stop. I plan on writing the Hetheridge books until I croak (how’s that for definitive?) and the Bones books have only just begun. But All Our Yesterdays is a project dear to my heart.

When I wrote it the first time, many moons ago, I was still a developing writer, learning my craft. Also, the market was different—a story about reincarnation featuring characters with special abilities was niche, not really sci-fi but not really fantasy, and supposedly of no interest to mainstream readers. But now, believable human dramas with fantasy or alternate-reality components like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones are mainstream.

Social media: I enjoy interacting with readers on Facebook, and I think many new readers have discovered me through my Facebook fan page. On Twitter, I’ve interacted with perhaps ten separate readers since day one. My hypothesis is, cozy mystery readers generally don’t use Twitter to discover new authors or fatten their TBR list. They use it to converse, have fun, and post reactions to current events. So now that’s how I use Twitter.

Appearances: I am open to book signings if the demand is there. I’ve always been mostly an ebook author, and while I still love and respect the print aspect of the industry, it’s a new and mostly digital world.

Covers: I am fairly hands-on. That said, I have an open mind, and once or twice my cover artist [https://www.facebook.com/J-David-Peterson-198013970253698/] has pitched an idea and I’ve enthusiastically agreed. Other times, as with the upcoming covers for the AOY trilogy, I located the images and dictated precisely what I wanted. I’ve never asked readers to get involved, but I might someday. It’s good to gather as much feedback as possible.

Audio books: The audiobooks are a relatively new segment of my business, and I’m very pleased with the public’s reaction to the reader, Matthew Lloyd Davies [http://www.matthewlloyddavies.com/]. He’s enormously talented and has a genius for making every character sound both distinct and compelling. I do think I’ve gained many new readers, people who bought one of my audios out of loyalty to him and found themselves enjoying the story as much as his performance.

Bundle: The bundle is possibly the best thing I ever did for my career, because it allowed me to reach a lot of readers who’d never heard of me. It also put me on the New York Times bestseller list, no. 19 in ebook bestsellers, on July 13, 2014. I think that bundle had a lot to do with the success of Marriage Can Be Murder and Black & Blue. A host of new readers were waiting for follow-ups, thanks to the bundle.

Another language: Germany is a promising new market. I’m happy with my sales for the German translation of Ice Blue, which is called Eisblau. However, since I don’t speak or read German, all marketing is handled by my German-language publisher, Amazon Crossing. I find them lovely to work with, and I hope we’ll partner in the future for more translations.

Author Description:
I've been in education for more than 39 years as a teacher, coach, counselor and administrator. I write thriller fiction but use my writing to teach, reach and move people. Oh yes, to entertain also.

Interview Excerpt

Next: My next work is tentatively titled, Caught In A Web, which is also thriller/mystery fiction. I view it as a "sort of stand-alone" in that it takes several prominent characters from my Lives Trilogy and moves them forward in time and places them in a new adventure. Very different storyline, dealing with youth/teen drugs and overdoses, and who is doing the selling. Several plot twists that will keep the reader on his/her toes.

Social media: I'm pleased with my twitter followers. Not only will they receive book/writing updates, but I also tried to provide inspiration for everyday living. My tweets will coincide with my blog, Simple Thoughts From A Complicated Mind, Sort Of at http://jrlewis.blogspot.com I believe social media is extremely important, especially so because I am an Indie writer. I have built a nice loyal fan base, and it is growing mostly by word of mouth.

Covers: I have been very fortunate to have a graphic artist who takes my suggestions and runs with them. Each cover speaks to the story and I felt that was important. Each cover has similarities to the others, and I felt that was important because they are a part of a series. The cover for Stolen Lives was tested out on Facebook. I gave them two choices and ultimately, they broke 50-50, so I went with my gut. I am pleased with the outcome.

Plots: Actually, I don't plot a book. I have a rough idea and I do a tremendous amount of prewriting "in my head" during the day, so that when I sit down to write at night (my usual time to write), it just flows. I do keep notes using a Word doc to keep characters and their characteristics straight.

Blog: Thank you! I try to keep my fiction work separate from my blog, which is nonfiction filled with hope and inspiration. I try to lift up and make a positive difference in the lives around me. I would mention my thriller/fiction work at the end of the blog with links to Amazon so they can check them out and purchase.

Reviews: I ask for reviews. I've been interviewed a number of times by newspapers and bloggers, and it's fun. There are times when readers contact me through Facebook. The reviews come naturally. Fortunately, my reviews have been very good, but I still stress when a poor one comes around. Human nature, I guess.

Author Description:
A veteran of the corporate wars, former journalist, and true studier of human and social behavior, John W. Mefford has been writing his debut novel since he first entered the work force twenty-five years ago, although he never put words on paper until late 2009.

John writes novels full of intrigue, suspense, and thrills, but they also evoke an emotional connection to the characters.

When he's not writing, he chases three kids around, slaves away in the yard, reads, takes in as many sports as time allows, watches all sorts of movies, and continues to make mental notes of people and societies across the land.

John lives in Frisco, Texas with his beautiful wife, three curious kids, and a feisty fat cat.

Interview Excerpt

Next: AT Large is the second book in the Alex Troutt Thriller Series. Still wondering if the FBI is the right fit for her and her new life, Alex is thrust into a bizarre string of murders. She partners with a CIA counterpart, and together they chase the killer up and down the east coast. But in the end, Alex must battle her own demons if she has any hope of stopping the brutal killings. AT Large is due out on March 11.

Social media: I love connecting with readers, and social media in general has been a cool way to do that. Facebook tends to be easiest method to share more about my books, my motivations and my upcoming plans. I've recently started experimenting with creating short videos...just to give my readers a different flavor of me and my upcoming projects.

Appearances: I've recently been interviewed on two podcasts. Both Stephen Campbell and Alexandra Amor were wonderful hosts and we had a great time discussing more detail around my Alex Troutt Thriller series, as well as my writing process, my inspiration, and a host of other fun topics. Here are the links: Stephen's podcast, CrimeFiction.FM - http://crimefiction.fm/john-w-mefford/
Alexandra's podcast, It's A Mystery - http://alexandraamor.com/multiple-mystery-series-and-writing-strong-female-characters-with-john-mefford/

Covers: I have a great partnership with my cover artist. I create the overall marketing concept and vision for the series, and then he reads my manuscripts and comes up with the basic ideas for the series. Once we agree on the high-level design, then we get into the details of each cover, carefully considering which elements to carry across to the other books in the series.

Novella: Jack Daniels and Associates using Kindle Worlds …I wrote up a novella full of sass and suspense that allowed me to use Joe's characters and my characters from the Booker series. It was a blast to write. I think some readers are always looking for shorter pieces of work to determine if they want to invest more time.

Bundles: Buying habits of readers are very complex. Some like to read a novella, others are looking for the discount of buying in bulk. So, I gave it to them. So far, they're eating up the Booker Box Set #1 (Streets of Mayhem, Tap That and Hate City).

Free books: At different times, I've given away the first book in each of my first two series (GREED and BOOKER) to give readers a chance to see if they enjoy my work. If they get hooked, and thousands have, then I have another long-term reader. And that's what it's all about.

Newsletter: Building an email list of readers who enjoy my work, even some who shout it from the mountain top, has had a profound impact on establishing myself as an thriller author. It's made a world of difference because it has created a dialogue with readers that I can't get on any other platform. I answer all of my emails myself and I truly the discussions.

Author Description:
Award-winning author Christine Nolfi provides readers with heartwarming and inspiring fiction. Her 2011 debut Treasure Me is a Next Generation Indie Awards finalist. The Midwest Book Review lists many of her novels as "highly recommended" and her books have enjoyed bestseller status. Look for her new series, Heavenscribe. Visit her at www.christinenolfi.com

"Please continue the mail, tweets and comments on FaceBook, Twitter, GoodReads and other sites. I cherish your support and love chatting with readers." --Christine

Interview Excerpt

Next: I'll have more additions to the Heavenscribe saga in 2016. Writing a magical story with spiritual overtones has been a joy. I'm also planning more books in the Liberty Series. Recently a traditional publisher asked for a proposal and sample chapters for a new series they'd like to consider publishing. I'm waiting for their decision with great anticipation.

Social media is critically important for writers. In today's climate, readers have the expectation they can connect with writers. Whether you use Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, Pinterest or another site, find the venue that's most comfortable for you.

Covers: I have a very hands-on approach to cover design, seeking out examples of great Women's Fiction covers for my designer to peruse before work begins. We discuss ideas for about one week before he begins each project.

Short story serials: The Kindle Worlds novellas weren't part of a marketing strategy although they've certainly helped expand my reader base. Author Toby Neal was given a World by Amazon, and asked if I'd write one of the debut stories. I've known Toby for a long time, and was delighted by the offer. After the success of The Shell Keeper, creating a second novella expanding the story was a no brainer.

Free books: I've had great success giving away free books. Presently none of my books are listed free--sales across my backlist are strong--but I'll undoubtedly use the strategy again for future series. For debut novelists with a series underway, setting book #1 free can spur sales of other books in the series.

Reader list: Primarily I expand my readership through sign-ups to my mailing list, on Facebook and through connections made on Goodreads. Luckily, readers of Women's Fiction are quick to send mail or comment on social media if they've enjoyed one of my books. Many of those women have become dear friends.

Reviews Sell Books: I still use the basic strategies outlined in Reviews Sell Books (and I should write an update). I didn't write the book for income--the book came about in response to the volume of direct mail received from writers asking, "How did you get so many positive reviews?"

Help for Writers: If the deal with the traditional publisher comes through, I'll find a full-time assistant. I could certainly use the help. As for my primary goal? To continue increasing my reader base, of course!

Next: Hard to Die, the sequel to my debut novel To Live Forever, will debut September 15, 2016. Hudson Valley. January 1950. A woman searching for her past meets a West Point cadet running from his future. Can they band together to vanquish their enemies when they can’t even trust each other?

Social media relationships are HUGE. Social media helped me meet my initial fans, and it gives readers an easy way to connect. I meet as many followers as I can, give periodic thank you gifts, and acknowledge people who interact. Building my following took time, consistency, and patience, but it definitely carries over to writing success.

Appearances: I’ll be in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina at the beginning of March. I’m keynoting a writing conference in Cuenca, Ecuador mid-March. And I’ll be in Seattle, Portland, Colorado Springs, and Nashville in April. Readers can find all my appearances at http://andrawatkins.com/events/.

Audio book: I read my own memoir for audio and almost LOST MY MIND. It isn’t for the faint-hearted. But I’ve reached readers who prefer audiobooks. People read at the gym, in the car, on the subway……..it’s an excellent way to convince people to give my books a try. I plan to offer my novels in audio format as well.

Support groups: Write on Edge community + I’m a member of several secret Facebook groups for authors, as well as the Goodreads author support group. I also joined Facebook groups targeted to my genres. Though self-promotion is prohibited, the moderators regularly share information about discounts, awards, and major press with the group. Writer support groups can help a book find new readers, but I value them to know I’m not alone. When I need a place to celebrate, vent, or even cry, other writers understand better than anyone.

Author bundles: My first published works were in anthologies. I’m proud to have my words bundled with the authors in the Precipice collections and was honored when they asked me to participate. Anthologies help writers cross-promote their work, but my main objective was publication. The Write on Edge folks put the book together and managed distribution. All I had to do was submit my work.

Reader list: My e-newsletter list is one of the most important things in my life. I do multiple freebies and thank you gifts a year. I encourage every reader to sign up at the back of each book, and I promote my newsletter on social media. I’ve also partnered with other authors for targeted promotions to grow my list, and I ask for signups at every event.

Blog: My blog is still the only online place I own and control. I can say whatever I want, and nobody can limit its reach or take it down. As the social media landscape becomes total pay-to-be-seen, blog readership is going to be vital for authors. Let’s not kid ourselves: Social media is fast becoming a platform where one must adapt to ever-changing rules. Paying brands are going to get the play. I still nurture my blog, because it’s the only place a reader can be sure to find me.

Natchez Trace Tracks in Time is a photography collection. It works best as a print book. At the moment, the publisher has no plans to convert it to either e-book or audiobook format.

Author Description:
I am a freelance journalist/editor/proofreader/photographer and also author of non-fiction (conventionally published by Crowood Press) and fiction books (self-published and available on Kindle). I have just finished the third in the JACK LOCKWOOD MYSTERY SERIES of thriller novels. I maintain a regular blog about general issues, and also another one entitled The Jack Lockwood Diaries, which has regular short stories featuring Jack Lockwood (the protagonist in the novels). Please click on the options to the right to see details of the different things I do.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I’m on the way to finishing my first Jamie Dark supernatural novel, hoping to get it completed by May or June… And I’m also well into my 4th Jack Lockwood novel, where Jack, while researching addiction clinics, purposely drinks to excess so as to mimic being an alcoholic so as to test the treatment.

Social media: I’ve never had any practical marketing strategy, nor have I ever advertised a book before it’s finished. I take the view that if the book cannot be bought why would anyone care if it’s on the way? I don’t know if twitter has helped but I couldn’t have advertised my books in any other way that I can think of.

Covers: I just find a photo from 123rf agency and buy a licence to use it. Then hand over to Blondie’s Book Covers (www.blondiebooks.com). Karen and Jody did my last two book covers and they did an excellent job for a very reasonable price.

Short story collection - The Jack Lockwood Diaries: I did the Jack Lockwood Diaries as a result of my blog The Jack Lockwood Diaries, where I added a short story every week or so, and took these off the blog and into the book. I still do this blog, but have been doing the Jamie Dark stories more recently.

Free book: The aim was just to ‘get the word out’ and try and appeal to more people, maybe get more reviews. No obstacles. I cannot fathom the philosophy so many people have of ‘It took me Years to write a book so the price must reflect this’ and ‘if you value your books at nothing, people will agree they’re worthless’. The fact is hundreds of people are writing books and nobody cares about the writer.

Blogs: Just as a means to reach readers and publicize the short stories. I hoped that the short stories would stimulate interest in the novels but it doesn’t seem to have happened.

Blog: Jamie Dark - Psychic investigator and architect: The goal is just to put the stories out there and hope people like them, maybe as a forerunner to the novel I’m now writing and to ‘build up’ the character of ghost hunter and architect Jamie Dark.

Author Description:
DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn't speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published.

Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their seventeen cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist.

She discovered a love for reading and writing at the age of three, by her mother's accounts. Through the years, she has maintained diaries and journals, but the journals she wrote as an adult provided the inspiration for The Bum Magnet.

Brady is a native Washingtonian (D.C.), lifelong Washington football fan, and professed nerd-girl who loves all things Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Big Bang Theory. She's a member of Romance Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, the Maryland Writers Association, and Sisters in Crime and lives to write novels, especially those involving hilarious quirky characters looking for love. Jade Kerrion, an award-winning author, got her start in fan fiction. She developed a loyal reader base with her fan fiction series based on the MMORPG Guild Wars. She was accused of keeping her readers up at night, distracting them from work, housework, homework, and (far worse), from actually playing Guild Wars.

And then she wondered why just screw up the time management skills of gamers? Why not aspire to screw everyone else up too? So here she is, writing books that aspire to keep you from doing anything else useful with your time. She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with her wonderfully supportive husband and her two young sons, Saint and Angel, (no, those aren't their real names, but they are like saints and angels, except when they're not.)

My name is Cindy Flores Martinez and I'm from a suburb of Los Angeles. I write sweet romantic comedy and inspirational romance. My debut novel, Mail-Order Groom, started out as a screenplay and movie project. I spent years shopping it around Hollywood, New York, and other parts of the world and had two well-known actors: an Academy Award nominated actor and a blockbuster film actress, interested in portraying the lead character's parents. After not finding the success I wanted, I officially canceled my film production company, Mail-Order Groom LLC, in November of 2009 and embarked on the journey of turning my screenplay into a novel. I have an MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Screenwriting. I have been a screenwriting instructor, screenplay consultant, script reader, and screenplay collaborator.
