Education and work:
Uvi earned her B. A. in Architecture and Town Planning from the Technion in Haifa, Israel and practiced with an innovative Architectural firm, taking a major part in the large-scale project, called Home for the Soldier.
Having moved to Troy, N.Y. with her husband and two children, Uvi received a Fellowship grant and a Teaching Assistantship from the Architecture department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. There, she guided teams in a variety of design projects and earned her M.A. in Architecture. Then, taking a sharp turn in her education, she earned her M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.
She worked first as an architect, and later as a software engineer, software team leader, software manager and a software consultant (with an emphasis on user interface for medical instruments devices.) All the while, she wrote and painted constantly, and exhibited in Israel and California. In addition, she taught art appreciation classes. Her versatile body of work includes bronze and ceramic sculptures, oil and watercolor paintings, charcoal, pen and pencil drawings, and mixed media.
Books and Genres:
Her two series won great acclaim. Still Life with Memories is a family saga series with touches of romance. It includes Apart From Love, My Own Voice, The White Piano, The Music of Us, and Dancing with Air. The David Chronicles is a historical fiction series. It includes Rise to Power, A Peek at Bathsheba, and The Edge of Revolt.
Her poetry book, Home, is in tribute to her father. Her collection of dark tales, Twisted, and her Historical Fiction book, A Favorite Son, are both new age, biblically inspired books. In addition, Uvi wrote and illustrated two children books, Jess and Wiggle and Now I Am Paper. Anna
When the flash bang blasted in the hallway, Anna dropped to her knees. Her cheek crushed into the dirty carpet where she sipped at a pocket of air not yet filled with acrid smoke. Her head seemed to swell and expand with the high-pitched whistle that followed the explosive’s concussion.
The FBI SWAT team swarmed simultaneously through the front and back doors. Dressed head to foot in black protective gear, these guys weren’t playing games. While the ringing in Anna’s ears muffled their directives, Anna knew if she did anything other than lay very still, they’d shoot her without a single question asked.
So, there she lay with her legs wide, fingers laced behind her head. She lay there and waited for her body to regain equilibrium, for the hard hands of the SWAT force to find her through the grey cloud of smoke.
The FBI were here doing their duty, cleaning up the riff-raff, scrubbing the world of conspirators, and home-grown terrorists, then they’d head back to the banality of their homes, a dinner of meatloaf and mashed potatoes in front of the TV. They’re just everyday guys doing their job, she told herself, trying to shift her brain toward rational thought, and away from her survival instincts.
A boot stomped down in front of Anna’s face. A knee pressed into her back. The weight of the rather sizable man pinned her, pressing the breath out of her body, leaving her oxygen deprived.
He has to do it this way. He doesn’t know I won’t fight.
Anna was expending a considerable amount of energy not fighting.
The man clapped his handcuffs around her left wrist before he swung her arm to bring it down to the small of Anna’s back. He twisted her right thumb and brought that hand down to match the other. Click-zip went the metal encircling Anna’s wrist. It was cold against her heated system. She had to work to make her body compliant when everything in her screamed that she should fight for her life.
Anna had known all along that she could be caught up in an FBI raid.
v She just didn’t expect it to be today.
But here it was.
The SWAT guy ran thorough hands over her body, searching for weapons. He pulled her phone from the cargo pocket on her pants and confiscated it. He snatched her knife from her waistband. They hefted Anna to her feet and walked her out to the street in front of the horrified neighbors. When they reached a non-descript car, SWAT guy turned her around and compared her face to the photo he pulled from under his chest plate. “Zelda Fitzgerald?” the guy asked, using Anna’s undercover name. “Zelda Fitzgerald?” the guy asked again.
Anna nodded.
He read her Miranda rights as he leaned down to clamp shackles around her ankles, then propped her beside the open door.
Her guard probably held her there in case she needed to vomit - a frequent side effect of being in a room with flash bang and having your limbic system lit up like the grand finale on the Fourth of July.

When the news was filled with stories about the girls captured for ten years by that monster in Cleveland (you know who he was...), Lazar was compelled to write a book to honor the women involved. The author lives on a ridge overlooking the Genesee Valley in upstate New York with his wife, daughter Allison, two little grandsons, two dogs, and four cats. I pushed the door open with my foot and walked into the apartment, the smell of bleach still heavy in the air. The box in my arms obstructed my view so I attempted to remember the layout of the place, stumbling against the counter a moment later. My arms sighed in relief as I set the box on the counter and leaned back, stretching my back.
No doubt I would feel this tomorrow.
“Good God Becky. I believe these boxes get heavier and heavier each time.”
I smirked as I turned to see my best friend, Lilah walking through the door, balancing two boxes in her arms. “It’s because you know the faster you can get them up here, the faster you can go.”
Lilah set the boxes on the floor, brushing her hair off her forehead. “Now Becky, I love helping you move.”
I laughed. “No, you don’t.”
“You’re right,” she said, placing her hands on her hips. “I don’t. I’m logging all these moves you know, for the time that I start moving all over the place. Do you think this will be it?”
I shrugged, opening the box marked kitchen supplies. Truthfully, I had moved, a lot, over the last two years, but I kind of hoped this was my last move well. I felt like all I did was live out of a box. “Maybe I should buy a sailboat and sail around the world.”
Lilah laughed as she flopped into the chair that the movers had brought up earlier. “Yeah right. Then you would miss me, and I can’t live on a boat. I get sea sick.”
I chuckled. Lilah did get violently sea sick even on the smallest bodies of water. That and I would miss her. Lilah had been my best friend for five years, having met while I was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. We were both involved in a running group off base. Even though she wasn’t in the army like me, we clicked instantly and from there she had been my rock, the person by my side when I needed her the most.
I couldn’t imagine not having her around. “Alright, I guess I will stay on dry land then.”
“Good,” Lilah said, crossing her long legs. “Because you wouldn’t know what to do without me.”
I threw a kitchen towel at her and turned back to my box, a smile on my face. I was really excited about this apartment. The realtor had called it cozy and full of natural light, which in turn meant tiny and lots of windows. All of which were true.
But I didn’t care. With it just being me, one bedroom was fine and as long as I had a place to write, it was going to be just fine. Plus, it was near a park, where I could do my daily runs.
A new start. That’s what I needed.
“I will move you all day long if it means that you won’t ever go back to Jack. I have never been so happy in my life the day you told me you were through with him.”
Turning back to Lilah, I tucked a strand of hair behind my ears, my chest seizing as I thought about my ex, or more like my most recent ex. It seemed that my luck with guys was non-existent and I was really, really good at picking out losers. Jack in that line of losers unfortunately and while I thought he was going to turn my luck around, he hadn’t.
In fact, I had spent more time babysitting him and his friends than I had attempting to build a relationship with him. Jack had enjoyed playing video games and had been pretty upfront with me on our first date. I had just thought it was a hobby.

CHAPTER ONE
"BECKHAM, IT'S SO SWEET OF YOU TO ASK..."
"Welcome to Busboys and Poets. I hope this table works for you. Jason will be your server tonight and will be right over. Enjoy your evening." Beckham Johnson, my mentor and head of the Small Town Violence project lightly tapped my bare shoulders as I eased into the cushioned chair. What a gentleman. Forget you Shawn Mallory. I'm glad I settled on the white off-the-shoulder sheath. I smile as I think of the two hours I spent in Black Market White House that took a chunk out of my already tight schedule. Looks like my time was well spent!
Beckham's crisp white linen shirt--open at the neck--and creased black slacks showcased a side of him I hadn't seen before. Hmmm, I like it. Apparently so did half the other women who eyeballed him as they sipped their happy hour cocktails.
I had called Beckham as soon as I checked into Embassy Suites yesterday. It's one of my favorite hotels. When Beckham told me he planned to hold the team briefings at the Embassy on 10th Street, it was a no brainer for me. I booked the room for a week, just enough time for our already scheduled three-day session and a few days for me to flesh out my project work schedule and rest up before hitting the road.
Planning and organizing is my thing. I'm good at it. And as conceited as it may seem, I don't need anyone to tell me that--because I make it a practice to not do what I know I can't do. And, I'm super hyped to be back in DC only a few blocks from the White House and Department of Justice. I assume that Beckham has blocked out some time for us to talk to the DOJ team overseeing our project.
"So how are you, Angelica? Are you settled in?"
"I'm fine. Excited, actually. How are you? You ready for tomorrow? What can I do to help?" I was eager to get a handle on where Beckham wanted the project to go. I've learned the hard way that this is critical to managing a project. The worst thing you can do is let a project evolve only to find out down the road that you made a wrong turn. Yep, he's taught me well.
"Slow down, Blue Lady. Relax. You look very nice, by the way."
Beckham's soft voice worked it's magic and reminded me of the first time he called me Blue Lady. I'll never forget it. I was heated when one of my colleagues opposed some language in the final draft of my pride and joy white paper on immigration reform. She'd reviewed the first four working drafts without comment. A final draft was not the time. Not with my tight publication schedule. In the middle of my pace the floor, spin, pace in the opposite direction, spin monologue, Beckham all but whispered, “Calm down Blue Lady, let's let Myra explain.”
