Author Description:
Joan Reeves is a New York Times and a USA Today bestselling author of Contemporary Romance. Her novels have been published in a half dozen languages, and her ebooks are available at most ebook sellers with audio book and print editions also available. Several of her books are available in French editions through her publisher in France.

When not writing romance--or nonfiction to share what she has learned in life--Joan divides her time between the hustle and bustle of Houston and a house in the Texas Hill Country. At their country house, Joan and her hero, her husband, attempt to grow wine grapes and fruit trees--all while fighting hordes of marauding gophers, skunks, deer, fox, and the occasional copperhead snake.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: Second Chance Bride. What do you have on the drawing board next? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Thank you, James. SECOND CHANCE BRIDE was the first book I'd written in which the heroine was a hated character from a previous book (April Fool Bride). I did the same thing with BRIANNA'S SEASON FOR MIRACLES, included in Love, Christmas 2. It's challenging to make a disliked character understood and loved, but it's rewarding when you pull if off. A reader said this about SECOND CHANCE BRIDE: "The best part, though, is how Constance's past is redeemed. It's absolutely beautiful."

Next up for me is another challenge--as if my life doesn't have enough of them already! *LOL* A few years ago I wrote a short story LuvU4Ever, it's free at most ebook sellers. A year later I wrote another, mentioning the previous characters. A year after that I wrote another, and that's when I realized I was creating a series of stories revolving around holidays plus each story introduced characters that then became the "stars" of their own story. I decided to formalize these short stories into a series with the thought of publishing all of them as a collection when I completed the 13 stories--Book 1 starts at Christmas and Book 13 ends the series and is also at Christmas. I'm working on making all of this not only make sense but also seem organic.

In addition to this, I'm preparing my first published book from 1993 for ebook publication. I could have published it as a "vintage" romance, but that seemed too easy. So I'm updating it with what is commonplace in today's world which creates myriad plot problems, i.e., looking up someone on the internet, the ease of making a phone call, etc. I'm also getting ready to publish BRIANNA'S SEASON FOR MIRACLES as a single title release.

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?

I love my Twitter followers. I used to name each new follower in a Friday tweet, but it grew so fast I couldn't keep up with it! I came to social media late. I don't know if social media presence has much effect on anyone's real success. I mean it's lovely to communicate with online friends, but I've never seen any hard evidence that this translates into very many sales. However, it really is true that writing can be a lonely process so it's nice to be able to reach out and touch someone as the old AT&T commercials once said.

I guess I built my success the hard way--one sale at a time. I started ebook publishing in 2011 with my backlist--updating each title, learning how to format, and forging ahead when there were no others one could use to do all the things necessary to publish an ebook. I sold thousands of copies a day of my first few books, and I'll probably always regret that the NYT and USA Today didn't put ebooks on their bestsellers list back then. I'd always been published by traditional NY publishers with foreign rights sold by then so I knew little about promoting, getting reviews, and all the other things that go into continued success. I learned it all, and when I was approached by Bragelonne, my French publisher, I knew enough to know to get an agent for foreign sales. Bragelonne Milady purchased World French Rights so my books can be found in many places in the world in French.

Even though I didn't do Facebook and Twitter until a few years later, I was fairly well-known by internet users. I'd been blogging since 2005, and I was also freelance writing, ghost writing, and ghost blogging so people on the internet knew me. On my own blog, I wrote about what I was doing--learning how to format, be a self-publisher for ebooks, etc. I like blogging so I joined a few group blogs along the way. That was pretty much the only promotion I did so I was way behind the curve when the romance ebook market became extremely crowded. At that same time, my younger daughter had 2 back surgeries that changed her life--and mine and my husband's too. When I should have been writing even more to stay on top, learning how to get reviews, helping new ebook readers find me, I had to back away entirely. It took two years for my daughter to improve enough that I could carve time out of my life to write again. By then, the ebook world had changed.

Unfortunately, due to the above, I've still not had the luxury of planning a book launch. With my daughter finally improved and working hard to live a normal life, although left with a lifelong chronic pain condition called Adhesive Arachnoiditis (if you contemplate back surgery or spinal injections, research this first!!), my goal is to write more, publish more, and actually plan targeted promotions instead of throwing something against the wall and hoping it sticks. Being part of these box set collections with friends has been a blessing just to keep my name out there, introduce my writing to new readers, and keep me motivated.

Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

When I was traditionally published, I did book signings. I do online interviews and speak at local writers' workshops and meetings. For years, I contributed to several RWA chapter newsletters. I blog nearly every day at SlingWords along with blogging once a month at Smart Girls Read Romance, Gems in the Attic, and Authors Billboard. I publish a subscription newsletter where readers can always find out what's going on in my life plus learn about Giveaways.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

Thanks, James! I'm definitely hands-on but only because I can afford to be. My daughter who is the chronic pain patient is a former high school art teacher with a degree in Graphic Design. She does all my book covers. In writing each book, I know the emotion and/or tone I want the reader to feel so I look for something that will visually convey that same emotion. I'm constantly shopping for art. I like photographs that may exhibit the physical characteristics of hair and eye color, but I don't want someone's face on the cover. I can write the man was "tall, dark, and delicious," and the reader will immediately form in his or her mind what that guy looks like. If I put a picture on the cover, that limits the reader's imagination. My idea of tall, dark, and delicious may be a turnoff for a reader. My daughter can take a photograph you've seen on umpteen different covers and change it through filters, angle, exposure, hue, and so many other ways, that it will look completely different. She's finally back to freelancing for others, not just me, so I highly recommend her.

Several of your novels have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience for you?

Audio books have been one of the best things about publishing because I adore audio books. For years, I listened to books on tape, then CD, then on my iPod, now Audible digital files on my cell phone. I was thrilled when I had the chance to go into audio. I have plans to put the rest of my books on audio in 2019 as well as to finally get print editions of all of them available. Audio sales were huge! Like print or ebooks, they're largest when they first debut and fall off over time. A new audio book gives a boost to older audio books. Personally, I find most audio book lovers don't necessarily buy the ebook or print book. They like audio because it's audio. I giveaway an audio book each month on RomanceBooks4Us as my way to grow audio fans among ebook readers.

Btw, I worked with some of the best narrators which was a thrill in itself. All of my narrators are on TV, movies, and stage. Each brought the story she narrated to life. I totally loved it when a reviewer said: "If you liked Sweet Home Alabama, you'll love Jane (I'm Still Single) Jones."

What is your primary genre? What has been your best marketing approach to this group?

Contemporary Romance. Some of my books are romantic comedy, and some are romantic thrillers. I find contemporary romance has something for everyone, and it's probably the broadest genre and has the most readers. There are just so many sub-genres that can be covered by that label.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

I usually give away a book each month to my mailing list subscribers. In 2019, I think I'm going to give away to my subscribers a chapter each month of a "big book" that my agent never could place several years ago. I do giveaways with my author friends for promotion purposes like at FB parties. That's fun, but when I give to my subscribers, I can see how many download the books so I know that giveaway is effective. I've done FB parties that have brought me new readers, but most public giveaways do not necessarily bring new readers. Those giveaways are populated by people who just want something free--especially when Kindles and high value prizes are at stake.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

Yes, as stated above. I mention it in my blog and on FB and there's a link in all my books. That's where most of my subscribers come from. I try to send a NL every month.

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed, marketing your books and providing useful information to other writers and your readers. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, take care of the social media and maintain your blog?

That's very kind of you, but SlingWords, my blog, is really my daily chat with visitors. It's not specifically aimed at writers because that's a small contingent of my readership. My only goal is to pass along information I've learned, and what I learn is usually from what's going on in my life. For instance, my sister-in-law had emergency surgery. I spent 2 weeks with her in early October. A week after I left, she had a stroke. Unbelievably, my younger brother had a stroke a week ago! So you're going to see some posts about living with high blood pressure, warning signs of stroke, etc. I review movies, TV, music, and books. I do blog about writing and promotion, but only if what I say can apply to other endeavors. Up until this year, I also had plenty of guest bloggers--authors I want to help broaden their audience.

Time is the biggest problem. When I'm well-organized, I can accomplish a great deal. When I'm tired, worried, and anxious, I suck at being well-organized so everything starts falling through the cracks. When I'm too exhausted to sit at the computer, I write inside my head. Scenes, dialogue, characters--they're all spinning around inside my head. When I was a kid and forced to wait for whatever reason, I'd see "movies inside my head." That's the way I've always thought of writing. It's a mental movie rolling from beginning to end. That's how I write especially when I don't have the time to outline, do character descriptions, etc. I start typing and the movie rolls. I type what I'm seeing and hearing. *LOL* Sounds crazy I know. I guess the story inside me that's dying to get out gestates until I have the time to get it typed up.

I like the idea of Author bundles. You are a part of a novel collection called Love, Christmas 2 with twenty-five other authors. What a great group of outstanding people. (Many have been interviewed on this blog). What was your main objective in bundling your works with other authors? What blogging, newsletter and social media promotions have you done to promote the collection?

I'll be honest, I haven't done as much as usual for Love, Christmas 2, just due to all the family emergencies. I created the video for this collection (view it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/v33btCbSn7k ). I do this for all of the collections to which I contribute a book. I've blogged about it on my blog and my group blogs, put it in my newsletter, tweeted, etc. My friends in the group have been wonderful and so supportive for which I thank them for being so understandable.

Chloe Elliot was the good girl. She’d never been a hell-raiser. Never gotten drunk, used drugs, smoked pot, or slept around. She didn’t even curse! Since her dad was the son of a minister and the oft-elected mayor, and her mom was the elementary school principal, she'd had no choice but to live a life above reproach. Life was perfect.

Until he dropped by the library to say hello to his best friend's little sister.

Chloe wasn't so little any more. In fact, just looking at her made his common sense evaporate. She affected him like no other woman--and he'd had women throwing themselves at him since he was a high school quarterback! If he made a move on her, her brother would nail his hide to the wall. Nobody's Cinderella - San Antone Two-Step Book 1
She wished on a star. Uh oh! She should have been careful what she wished for!

Review for this sexy romantic comedy: "I love Ms. Reeves' heroines. There is a little bit of them in all of us and that endears them to us even more. Just enough conflict, steam, misunderstandings, and humor."

Darcy Benton is the oldest cliche in the world—a woman in love with her boss. Other than that, she's no-nonsense, practical, mature, and sober. She's just the kind of woman Chase Whitaker wants as head of accounting for his company. She's definitely not the kind of woman he wants in his bed.

Enter Darcy's meddling, matchmaking best friend who has a plan to transform Darcy into a hottie designed to attract Chase's interest. All it takes? A couple of little lies. And that pesky wish on a star.

A billionaire, a movie star, a secret crush. A Gilligan's Island re-run? No, just your typical high school reunion!

What could be worse for a former high school beauty queen, who never landed the only man she ever loved, than attending her 10-year high school reunion alone? Not much, according to textile designer Jane Louise Jones as she prepares to endure the weekend in her hometown, just south of nowhere in the rolling hills of Louisiana.

To make matters worse, Morgan Sherwood, the town boy-wonder who made good in a big way, arrives with his entourage in a stretch limo, and he's not a geeky kid any more. He's six feet of tanned, rippling muscles, and he plans to focus his high-powered brain and every seductive charm he possesses on the lovely Miss Jones.

With a former classmate intent on claiming the billionaire as husband number four, a Hollywood starlet who shows up to party with Morgan, and an old boyfriend intent on stealing Jane's affection, Morgan has more obstacles than he'd expected.

Throw in her grandmother and the rest of the blue-haired, matchmaking women of the Vernon Ladies Bridge Club, lots of southern charm, a ten-year old betrayal, and plenty of humor for a heartwarming—and heart throbbing—sexy romantic comedy that will leave you with a smile.

Still The One
Burke Winslow needed a wife. But he didn't have his ex, Ally, in mind for the position.

Burke Winslow stands at the altar, ready to marry his business partner in a marriage of convenience. The minister solemnly asks: "If anyone here knows why this man and this woman shouldn't be joined in holy matrimony, let him speak now or forever hold his peace."

A rain-soaked, bedraggled Ally Fletcher limps down the aisle and shouts, "Stop the wedding!"

What follows is a funny, sexy romp that proves when there's love, passion never dies, it just smolders away until you toss some gasoline on it. Burke and Ally provide that gasoline when they find themselves locked in a marriage of--inconvenience.

His cagey grandfather pulls Burke's strings, and her equally cagey grandmother manipulates Ally. Toss in a pretend boyfriend for Ally, and Burke's scorned business partner left at the altar to make for complete chaos.

Can Burke and Ally stop fighting long enough to peel away the layers of the past and discover the truth about their love and passion? Will the truth free them or put them asunder?
