Excerpt from My Christmas Romance

CHAPTER 1

I’d made my escape. Co-workers and old college friends were waiting like vultures for moving day to say goodbye and throw a bon voyage party for me, but I’d fooled them. With all of my belongings packed, the movers came on time to load the van, and I would be out of the apartment a full day early. One last lap around the place to make sure it was empty and I was out of there. The smell of my landlady’s soup was just beginning to waft up the stairwell, and all I could think of was thank God I don’t have to smell that again. I knocked on her door to return my keys.

“Oh I can’t believe you’re really leaving!” she said. “It’s been so nice having you. How long will it take you to get home?”

We hugged and I attempted my exodus, trying not to engage her any longer.

“Just sixteen hours,” I answered, talking over my shoulder as I walked away. “I’ll text you when I get there.”

The landlady slipped her hand up to her neck and grasped her sweater, pulling it closer in like she was freezing. The motion reminded me of my grandmother and I turned away before melancholia could set in. She was a nice landlady, only mid-fifties I guessed, but she dressed and acted like she was eighty. I couldn’t wait to get away from her. I waved without looking back on my way out to the car as the door closed after me.

Freedom!

I don’t remember exactly when I began to feel like my job and apartment were suffocating me, but it was just enough sensation to fantasize about doing something else with my life. And then the call came that my father was dead. It was so timely, heartbreaking, yet liberating. I’d wanted to go home since graduation, feeling that since home was where my history was, it would be the only place where I could find true happiness. Sadly, as long as he was there, going home was impossible. The recent unexplainable suffocation didn’t hold a candle to what could be inflicted by my father.

This aberration of a relationship had its roots somewhere before the premature death of my mother in a tragic accident when I was sixteen. An out-of-court settlement yielded a sum of money that allowed my dad to stay home, raise me, and work at his art, a landscape painter of some renown. Never letting on that he felt burdened by having a teenager; it was just the opposite, and we thrived for the most part.

Scores of women came up our walkway in high heels with casserole dishes shortly after my mother died, my father completely oblivious to their purpose. He’d let them in and I would sit back, observing. Aghast, I watched some of my mother’s closest friends making a play for the old man just days after she was laid to rest.

“Dad, open your eyes,” I’d said. “They’re so obviously hitting on you!”

Unimpressed, he’d chuckled in amusement.

“Your mother has only been gone for two weeks. I’m not even thinking about another woman. I don’t think I’ll ever be interested,” he said.

I should have been thrilled, I guess; if we’d had a normal relationship, it would have been great that he was going to put all his effort into me. But that was all he’d ever done and I was scared with my mother gone, there’d be no buffer. From the earliest recollection of mine, she would admonish him when he got too clingy.

“For Christ’s sake, Alex. Give the kid some room,” she’d said shortly before her accident. “Honey don’t you want to go out? Here’s my keys; take off before your father finds some activity for the two of you.” I’d grab the keys and get out before he could nab me. The contradiction was that I usually wanted to be with him, too, finding some great activity for us to do together if he didn’t come up with something first. He taught me to hunt and fish and how to operate a backhoe and a front loader. He had a small plane and I had my amateur license before I was seventeen. But with my dad, the more of my time I gave, the more he wanted from me. And if there wasn’t an adventure planned, his attention would become suffocating.

The prospect of continuing our adventures would have been great if he would have supported me in my choice when it was time to choose a career path in college. Instead, he made sure to remind me daily that I had no need to work, that we could spend our lives traveling together, sailing the world, hiking across Europe, or buying a house in Greece and living there in anonymity. He was so afraid for me. I wanted to join the Air Force and he had a fit. I thought he was having a heart attack, so I called the emergency squad.

“It’s called a panic attack,” the ER doctor said.

So he was safe, but it was effective. I wouldn’t pursue the armed forces. Then I thought about law enforcement, but part of the review process for the Michigan State Police was a family interview. That would go over badly.

At the beginning of my senior year in high school, I felt like a giant hole had opened up and little by little the sides were caving in as I was getting closer and closer to the edge. I woke up in the middle of the night clenching my pillow, hanging on for dear life. I subconsciously prevented myself from calling out in my sleep - too many middle-of-the-night rescues by my father who’d rush into my room in his long johns, flipping the light switch on and scooping me up for protection.

“Dad! Put me down,” I’d yelled, fighting him. “You’re scaring the crap out of me.”

“I thought you were being kidnapped,” he said, panting, clearly scared. Setting me down, my feet on the floor, he sat on the edge of my bed. “Sorry,” he said, his head in his hands. “I have never heard such a horrible sound. You were screaming like someone was killing you.” I wasn’t impressed.

“Don’t come in here again,” I said firmly. “I’m going to start locking my door.”

He looked at me with such sorrow. I thought, Oh God let me last just a few more months.

High school graduation was a nightmare. My grandmother clung to my dad, the two of them wailing; his sister Anna was angry with me, shaking her head and whispering how selfish I was to leave the poor man alone. My uncle Jimmy, dad’s older brother slipped me a hundred-dollar bill.

“Take a bus and run,” he said. “Don’t stick around.” His younger sister, Eleni stood by me, encouraging me to stick to my independence.

“You do what you have to do,” she said. “Leave your father to us.”

My mother’s sister, Pearl was appalled. “You poor thing,” she whispered. “Rina used to say your dad was going to freak out when you left home, but I thought she was being a drama queen. Now I see it was him all along.”

The only reason I was able to go to school so far from home, leaving Michigan to go to New Jersey, was because my father graduated from Rutgers. The entire family was there again on the day I left for school. I needed a car; campus housing was five miles from the campus and it wasn’t a neighborhood you’d feel safe riding a bike through. We loaded the trunk with everything I’d need. When it came time to drive off, my father lost it again. I had to shut the car off and get out to console him. The neighbors had gathered on the sidewalk with the family, and Mrs. Walker, who’d been a close friend of my mother, came up to my dad and put her arm around his shoulders, trying to hide a smirk.

“You go on,” she said to me, winking. “We’ll see to your dad.”

Freedom!

I got back in the car and took off toward New Jersey, looking in the side mirror as Mrs. Walker and my aunts helped my dad up the stairs into the house, followed by the family entourage, who would keep him company in the ensuing years while I pursued a business degree that I didn’t particularly want.

The first month of my freshman year was horrible; he came for parents’ weekend and then threatened to stay. I had to threaten back, telling him I would run away and never speak to him again if he didn’t go back to Michigan right then. The next four years were an amalgam of trying to ignore my father’s attempts at contacting me, and fighting with him when he would show up unannounced…

Don't You Forget About Me - Pam of Babylon Book Two
When charming, seemingly devoted Jack Smith dies, his wife and his two girlfriends are astonished to learn that they were not the only love of his life, and that, in fact, Jack was a rogue who was carrying on secret existences with other women. Shattered by grief and stunned by Jack's betrayals, these three women, Pam Smith, Marie Fabian, and Sandra Benson, find themselves suddenly thrown together. They could have despised one another, jealously guarding their private memories of their time with Jack and hating those they perceived to be their rivals, but instead, the women begin to realize there might be strength in numbers and in shared pain. Slowly, they begin to open their hearts to one another. They bind together to try to make sense of their lives and to try to heal the terrible shock.

But the more they learn about Jack and his nefarious past, the more they begin to question everything they thought they ever knew about him. Not only did Jack carelessly cheat on each of them, without thought to the harm he was causing, but the women are stunned to discover a secret of Jack that he never revealed.

As the women try to piece together the real life story of Jack, they begin to deal with their own lives differently, as well. They must deal with Jack's heartbroken mother, who knew nothing about her son's clandestine dealings in life. The tragedy also takes a toll on their working lives, and most of all it takes a toll on them, robbing them of sleep, hope, and even dreams. But with a sense of shared sisterhood, a little laughter, and a whole lot of determination, these brave women forge brave new lives that are full of promise.

The novel probes the difficulties in thinking that we can ever really know a person, even a loved one. All the women in Don't You Forget About Me wonder if they had been really and truly loved by Jack, or if he had simply played them for fools. They question their own blindness to his faults and how they allowed themselves to believe that they might have had it all, when what they had was really more of a dream. The book investigates modern social problems with grace and warmth. Infidelity, it uncovers, can do more than break hearts. In showing some of the worst things that can happen in relationships,it also teases us to imagine the best, a world in which loyalty, devotion and fidelity are prized. As the characters grow and change, they have the possibility for those things.

Don't You Forget About Me is a tale of love lost and then found again. A sequel to Pam of Babylon, Don't You Forget About Me can also be read all on its own. You will not like this book if many characters and lot of twists and turns is not your cup of tea.
