With some of SD13s crew lost on their previous mission, and others moving on to better things, new arrivals fill their positions, some that have a sorted past with the current well knit group.

On a mission to investigate why production has stopped on Resource Planet 88, the new team finds a whole lot more than they expected. To make matters worse, the deceased former captain's brother is out for revenge, and has things planned for Captain Adrianna Archa, that no one could possibly expect.

Gripping space battles, perfectly laid traps, and a damaged ship are just the beginning of of their problems. If this new, conflicted crew wants to survive, and make it home alive, they must put aside their differences and do the impossible, for not only is Captain Archa's life on the line, the rest of the crew and their top secret, Legion stealth ship, Star Dragon 13, is at risk as well.

Chapter 1

The noise of the other officers pressed in on their conversation as Adrianna and Bubby shared a drink in the Officers’ Club on Enchinda 7. The second debriefing, in as many days lasted longer than either liked, but after the brass was satisfied, they were released to unwind before their next mission. Adrianna emptied her shot glass with a quick tilt of her head then sat it down. The alcohol burned her throat in that welcome, gut warming sort of way. She enjoyed the sensation a moment before chasing it with some sagg beer from a chilled mug. The tension of the previous hours began to evaporate almost immediately.

“I don’t know how you can drink that mud,” said Bubby, his beer was an imitation of the pale ales of Earth and he gulped it down, then licked the froth from his upper lip with a grin.

“I don’t know why you even bother to drink that water,” said Adrianna, draining her mug in mock imitation of him. “You have to drink three or four just to feel anything.”

The waitbot arrived, deposited refills, and put a plate of food in front of each of them, then departed with their empty mugs. Bubby winked at her and dug into his meal.

That caused her to smile. It was an old debate, one that reminded her of their first tour together.

The Officers’ Club here, was large. To help relax the patrons, the lighting was dimmer than outside. Several low couches dotted the room, with even lower tables in front of them. The bar had five seats positioned before it, and all were filled. A number of tables lined the walls, each occupied by a few officers there to relax and dine. The lounge was usually full at all hours. There was always a group either about to embark or just returned. You could usually tell the difference by how much they drank. It wouldn’t look good to show up to your ship drunk. A large group gathered at the bar broke up and dispersed after the bartender cashed them out.

One man stayed behind, nursing a half-full pint of dark purple beer. He downed the rest of the drink and slammed the mug on the bar with a loud crack, that drew Adrianna’s attention. The bartender hurried over.

Bubby turned to see what caught her eye and saw the officer. “Taking a fancy to hybrids, or just looking for an upgrade?”

“I don’t know. Depends on what’s been enhanced.”

“What do you mean enough? I’ve only had a couple!” The hybrid officer pounded his fist on the bar, causing his empty mug to dance away. The bartender grabbed it before it skated off the edge. The hybrid grabbed the bartender by the wrist. “I said I want another!”

The bartender’s response was inaudible, but the jovial murmur of the patrons lowered to a hushed whisper. The door opened and two security guards ran in and flanked the hybrid. He stood, passed his credit chit over the scanner, and stomped toward the door. The guards followed him. As they passed near Adrianna and Bubby’s table, a faint glimmer of recognition tickled her memory but faded before she could grab it.

“At least some of us are having a better day,” said Bubby.
