Safe Harbor excerpt

It was late afternoon on the thirtieth of December. The Bay Street and Wall Street stock markets had just closed, when an attractive woman rushed into my office. Her blue eyes were pleading. "Mrs. Tierney, I need to speak to you."

“You can't barge in here," said Rose, my assistant. "I'm sorry, Pat, she ran past me."

"I'll take care of it, Rose,” I said. “Call it a day."

Rose scowled at the woman and nodded at me.

I motioned to the woman to take the chair facing my desk. "You've caught me at a bad time, Ms.…"

"Seaton.” She held out a hand. “Jude Seaton."

I hesitated, then shook it. "I'm very busy. Who referred you to me?"

"It…it's not what you think. I don't need an investment advisor."

"Then why come to me?" I was sure she’d try to sell me something until I saw tears on her face. What was she up to?

"It's my little boy, Tommy. Someone may…hurt him."

"Your little boy?"

She took a deep breath. "I know this is a strange request, but…I need someone to take Tommy over the New Year while I sort things out. Would you…?"

Was she crazy? She was in her mid-thirties, nicely dressed. Didn't look like a nut case, but…

"Ms. Seaton, if your son’s in danger, you need the police."

"No. No police. Absolutely not."

She was up to something she didn't want the police to know about. I wanted her out of my office. "Look, Ms. Seaton, you saw our sign outside. We’re Tierney Pratt Financial. Not a daycare center."

Her eyes grew larger. "I didn't think you'd turn Tommy away."

"Whatever made you think that?"

"Tommy," she said, "is Michael's son."

I let her words sink in. "Michael? My husband? Is this some kind of … joke?"

She shook her head, then motioned for me to follow her to the door. “See for yourself.”

In the reception area, a small boy was seated on a chair, swinging his legs as he focused on a gaming device in his hands.

“Tommy,” the woman said.

The child looked up and grinned.

My heart did a flip-flop. The boy was a miniature Michael—the same brown eyes framed with long lashes. The same wavy brown hair. He even had Michael’s dimple on the right side of his face.

I closed the office door and bowed my head. My late husband had a son.

How strong is a mother's love?

When Pat Tierney's daughter, Tracy, asks her to help find Tracy's partner, Jamie Collins, their mother-daughter relationship is stretched to the limits. Pat heads out to cottage country where an elderly man, who killed Jamie’s sister in an impaired driving accident ten years ago, has perished in a suspicious fire. Unfortunately, Jamie is the prime suspect.

Pat takes charge at the new branch her investment firm has opened in the seemingly idyllic community where Jamie grew up, and her search for Tracy's missing sweetheart takes her through a maze of fraud, drugs, bikers and murder.

Once again, Pat proves that family can always count on her.

Black Water excerpt (early in Black Water, Pat Tierney and her friend Celia go for a spin on a snowmobile named Mollie)

The frozen lakes and the creeks that joined them flew by. We waved at the people on the snowmobiles we passed, and they waved back at us.

On the fourth lake, a crowd had gathered on the far west side, and Celia pointed Molly in that direction. As we got closer, I saw that a strip of black water about six feet wide bridged the frozen bay we were on to the bay beyond it. Celia cut the engine. "It's a snowmobile skip over the narrows," she said. "Let's check it out."

We left Molly on the ice and walked over to the group of people on the beach. Their eyes were riveted on a black-and-yellow snowmobile that zoomed across the ice on the farther bay headed for the strip of open water.

I stared at it in horror. "The driver's going to drown!"

Celia put a hand on my arm. "Watch this."

The snowmobile hit the water at top speed and kept on going, spray flying out in all directions. "He's going across the top of the water just like a stone does when you skip it," Celia said.

A cheer went up from the crowd when the machine landed on the ice in our bay.

"Mark Nicholson," a man said over a loudspeaker. "His seventh run of the day at 26.04 seconds."

We watched two more snowmobiles skip over the water.

"The heavier the rider and the machine, the faster they need to go," Celia said as we walked back to Molly. "If they don't make it across the water, they sink like stones. It takes only seconds for a snowmobile to drop to the bottom of the lake."

"And the drivers?"

"They're wearing wet suits. They'll come back for their machines in the spring."

"Why would anyone—?"

"Want to do it? Challenge. Personal best." She held up her hands. "Hey, I know. It's dangerous and it's unregulated. But some people are hooked on it."

I wondered what she would do if a stretch of open water got in our way. One look at the grin on her face and I had my answer.

Murder, jealousy, fraud, deceit—welcome to cottage country!

Financial planner Pat Tierney’s dream vacation in cottage country turns into a nightmare when the body of an elderly woman is discovered in a storage locker. Pat’s friend, Bruce Stohl, is the murdered woman’s son, and when he is pegged by police as their prime suspect, Pat rallies to find his mother’s killer.

Meanwhile, a con artist has targeted cottages in the area, and vacationers are arriving, only to learn they are victims of a rental scam. When disgruntled renters show up at her door, Pat fears for her family’s safety.

Now she must navigate treacherous waters to protect those who are dear to her.

Raven Lake excerpt

“This locker here could make one of you a millionaire,” said the barrel-bellied man in the floral shirt. The metal door clanked as he rolled it up.

“So could the lottery ticket in my wallet,” Jock muttered as he swatted at the blackflies. He slapped at his neck. “Damn bugs!”

“Suck it up, big guy.” Crystal said. “If I can take the bugs, you can too.”

Floral Shirt raised the sound level on the microphone. “Jewelry, works of art, old coins. Everyone gets a quick look-see. Line up behind me, and walk past the door. But don’t step inside, or you’re outta here.”

Jock and Crystal joined about forty people filing past the storage unit. It held a jumble of furniture and boxes. A rolled-up rug, tied with rope, lay on the floor.

“Nothin’ in there but crap.” A man with a gray ponytail turned, and pushed his way out of the crowd. “Not for me.”

“I think he’s right,” Jock said to Crystal. “Looks like they cleared out Grandma’s house. There’s no market for lace doilies and crocheted afghans. Smells funny in there, too.”

“Quiet!” Crystal elbowed him in the ribs, then lowered her voice. “Farms, country homes, that’s where you find great antiques.”

Jock scowled at her. “We wasted two hours driving up here.”

“Could be possibilities if the price is right. See those big crates in the back? Someone took the trouble to protect whatever’s in them.” She glanced around the crowd. “These hicks wouldn’t know an antique from—”

A squawk from the microphone brought their attention back to the man in the floral shirt. “Okay! You’ve all had a look. Let’s get the show rollin’.”

Crystal surveyed her rivals, and sniffed in disdain.

“Who’ll give me one hundred? I’m bid one fifty…I’m bid two hundred…” The auctioneer fielded bids in rapid succession. “I’m bid eight twenty-five…I’m bid eight fifty. Eight fifty going once…”

“Nine hundred!” Crystal cried.

Jock grabbed her arm. “Are you crazy, Crystal?”

She shook off his hand, keeping her eyes on the man in the floral shirt.

“Do I hear nine twenty-five?” the auctioneer asked. The other bidders shook their heads.

“Nine hundred going once, nine hundred going twice…sold! To the redhead in the green dress.”

Inside the locker an hour later, Crystal stared in dismay at the crates that she and Jock had unpacked. “Damn! Christmas decorations. Old photos…”

“Tried to tell you, but you had to rush in.” Jock looked down a crate at his feet. “Doilies, I bet, in this mystery box.”

She glared at him as he pried open the lid with a crowbar. Her face brightened as she surveyed the contents. “This is more like it. Old comic books. Could be worth something.”

“Grandma, the nerd. Who knew?”

“More likely her nerd son back in the sixties.” She looked around the locker. “Let’s check out this rug.”

Jock grunted as he dragged the rug to the entrance. “Man, it’s heavy. Feels like there’s something else in here.”

He cut the rope, and unfurled the rug. The lifeless body of a white-haired woman tumbled to the ground.

Crystal gasped, and held a hand to her mouth.

“Now who’d go and clear out Grandma with her furniture?” Jock asked.
