HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of June 2016

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.

Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our June 2016 crew.

Author Description:
Over the years, reading and writing were an integral part of my eclectic employment history as an Insurance Underwriter, Statistical Coder, and Claims Adjuster; as a Professional Realtor; as a Police Reservist and Part Time Peace Officer; and finally, as a Security Dispatcher. During this time, I also composed short stories and haiku poetry for private enjoyment.

Now that there is time to write novels, my lifetime experiences offer plenty of background material for a planned mystery series. My first novel, FOR EVERY ACTION There Are Consequences, is set in Chicago's Loop and introduces Hawaiian-born Pepper Bibeau as an Insurance Investigator whose assignments sometimes lead her into a mystery maze of murder! In the second novel, DEADLY AS NATURE, Pepper sticks closer to home in eastern Wisconsin.

Honolulu has been my home since 1992. I am a member and current president of Sisters in Crime/Hawaii, the local chapter of Sisters in Crime, Inc., and a member of The Makiki Community Library where our monthly meetings are held. I am also a member of the Ala Moana Toastmasters group.

In 2012, I accepted the National Novel Writers Month, NaNoWriMo, challenge to write 50,000 words in a month. The result of my efforts, WITH FIERY VENGEANCE, is set in Hawaii and was released in Winter, 2013. NESHOTO JUNCTION HOMICIDE followed in January, 2016.

Interview Excerpt

Next: My latest project, the fifth novel in my Pepper Bibeau Mystery Series, is entitled Blood Red Homicide. You can probably see a pattern here, and my next novel will also have ‘Homicide’ in the title. This novel is unique because of how the story evolved. A cousin who enjoyed my series wanted to participate in creating one of the stories. He developed some of the characters and wrote the premise for a mystery. Using his notes, I wrote the first 50,000 words of the story during the 2014 National Novel Writers Month (NaNoWriMo). I strongly urge every author to participate in at least one NaNoWriMo month to get a feel for writing a first draft without getting caught up in the editing process until the story is on paper. (see showcase post for Blood Red Homicide)

Social media: I have been active on Twitter since 2010 and have become friends/acquaintances with people all over the world. I enjoy the interaction of Social Media as a contrast to personal interaction with people in my writing world near home.

Everything I post on social media sites reflects my interest in writing and the topics raised within my novels. My blog posts focus on the mystery genre, whether in the form of an author interview, book review, or essay.

Personal appearances: Much of my marketing is done on the Internet. I have also given talks, participated in panel discussions, and done readings at local libraries, for Toastmasters groups, conferences, and book fairs. Word-of-mouth has been a beneficial avenue of sales for me in my local community and though lifetime contacts around the country.

Author bundle Paradise, Passion, Murder: Author Terry Ambrose coordinated the project for Paradise, Passion, Murder to benefit Read Aloud America in Hawaii. He chose the theme, mystery stories set in Hawaii. I don’t find time to participate in many such projects but I definitely wanted to be included in this anthology.

Writer support groups: As President of Sisters in Crime/Hawaii, this group takes up much of my non-writing time. We are a support group of Authors Helping Authors. Our in-meeting guest speaker topics and workshops, along with outside activities…

Giveaways: For recognition purposes, I give away print books of my new publications on Goodreads. For Earth Day, I was invited to participate in an ebook giveaway. The marketing idea was to “Save a tree, read an ebook.” We had fun blogging and tweeting the event. Along with attracting new readers, the giveaway generated new sales on other published books.

Author Description:
Lynn Cahoon is the author of the NYT and USA Today bestselling Tourist Trap cozy mystery series. Guidebook to Murder, book 1 of the series won the Reader's Crown for Mystery Fiction in 2015. She's also the author of the soon to be released, Cat Latimer series, with the first book, A STORY TO KILL, releasing in mass market paperback September 2016. She lives in a small town like the ones she loves to write about with her husband and two fur babies.

Interview Excerpt

Next: A Story to Kill releases August 30th!

Former English professor Cat Latimer is back in Colorado, hosting writers’ retreats in the big blue Victorian she’s inherited, much to her surprise, from none other than her carousing ex-husband! Now it’s an authors’ getaway—but Cat won’t let anyone get away with murder…

Social media: Twitter is still a mystery to me. When I started this SM stuff, I would 'manage' my account monthly. (I actually had time. lol) I would cut off followers who unfollowed me when I followed them - a list building trick. I followed everyone who twitter suggested I follow. So it was a lot of work. Now, I follow who I'm interested in and who are interested in me. It's a lot more fun now.

Personal appearances: I do. Probably too many this year, but I do. You can find my list on www.lynncahoon.com or on my Facebook page if I remember to tell people I'm doing something. My next signing will be at RWA Nat'ls in San Diego.

Covers: As most traditional authors will tell you, covers are a piece of luck. I don't have 'control' over what happens, but I do make suggestions and most of the time, what I wanted was what comes out. It's like a game of telephone. :) Now, my self pub covers have been my design, but my cover designer is great at changing up things that she sees need correcting.

Audio books impact on your regular sales: Most definitely. There's a different audience for audio books. I have one lady at work who listens to Audible as she works. I'm a commute listener - the only way I get reading in these days. I think authors need to have their books out there in any and all delivery devices.

Novellas: We are training readers to read shorter. It's been proven in a study. That being said, I like writing novellas because it gives me a chance to visit that world without committing to an entire novel. Sometimes I want to touch base with my worlds so it's an easy way for me to come back. And some stories aren't full books.

Bundling: The Bull Rider's Collection is a true bundle. I think bundling works best with like authors. I got mega sales (of the other books) when The Bull Rider's Brother was in an anthology . But I don't think sales translate to new series. Or at least that's my experience.

Free book: Ah, the controversy of the free book. I give away back list books. I rarely give away new releases, but my publisher gives me a batch to use during releases. I've done two five day free sessions on my self published series to 'get reviews.'

Reader list: I do have a mailing list. I was using Mail Chimp, but now my website does my newsletter once a month. I do a giveaway once a quarter from the newsletter of any of my backlist books. And I have a link to sign up on my website. I also maintain a snail mail list for post card mailings for new releases.

Reviews: My publisher sets my books up on NetGalley. But I also do a blog tour and if a blogger has reviewed in the past and isn't on the tour, I send them a NetGalley link. With A Story to Kill, I got several ARC's to send out so they went to my cozy bloggers who loved the Tourist Trap mysteries.

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Described by critics as "one of our strongest thriller writers on the scene," author Kenneth Eade, best known for his legal and political thrillers, practiced law for 30 years before publishing his first novel, "An Involuntary Spy." Eade, an up-and-coming author in the legal thriller and courtroom drama genre, has been described by critics as "One of our strongest thriller writers on the scene and the fact that he draws his stories from the contemporary philosophical landscape is very much to his credit." He is the author of the "Brent Marks Legal Thriller Series", the fifth installment of which, Killer.com, won best legal thriller in the 2015 Beverly Hills Book Awards, and the "Involuntary Spy Espionage Series".

Said Eade of the comparisons, "Readers compare me in style to John Grisham and, there are some similarities, because John also likes to craft a story around real topics and we are both lawyers. However, all of my novels are rooted in reality, not fantasy. I use fictional characters and situations to express factual and conceptual issues. Some use the term 'faction' to describe this style, and it is present in all my fictional works."

Eade has written twelve novels, which are now in the process of being translated into six languages. He is known to keep in touch with his readers, and offers a free Kindle book to all those who sign up at his web site, www.kennetheade.com.

Interview Excerpt

Next: Beyond All Recognition" is scheduled to be released July 18, 2016 and is available for pre-order at: https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-All-Recognition-Thriller-Thrillers-ebook/dp/B01ELUCTVC.

Social media: ...To build the following, I visited other author's pages whom I support and followed their followers. A percentage of them followed back. I also tweet things about books as well as other subjects I am interest in, which also builds the following.

Covers: I am still using a hands-on approach. I look at other covers in the genre and particular subject which look appealing, and try to get inspiration from them. Valentina helps me with consultation. I have a cover designer who takes the suggestions from us and gives us several examples to choose from. Then we fine tune the one we like the best.

Book trailers: In my opinion, trailers don't translate to success, which means sales. I give the trailer artist a script and the idea of what types of images to use and she locates them and makes a draft for my approval. I found her on Fiverr, so her costs are very reasonable

Audio books: The audio books are selling, but at a lesser rate than ebooks. I would estimate that they sell at the rate of about 20% of paperbacks, so I'm glad I did them. The audience seems to be completely different.

Bundling: The objective started with building a loyal readership, but since my career was in law, I began to enjoy doing the Brent Marks series because it gave me the opportunity to explore and express ideas in more depth that one can in a busy law practice.

Reader list: I do have a list, which is supported by Twitter invitations to join the list and giveaways. I give away a book to everyone who signs up and offer a Kindle Fire giveaway about every month.

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
I'm Dan Jolley. I grew up in a rural town in northwest Georgia as a weird, awkward nerd who loved to make stuff up. I’m still a weird, awkward nerd, but now I’m lucky enough (and stubborn enough) to get paid to make stuff up, and I make my living writing novels, video games, comic books, and children's books.

My latest project is GRAY WIDOW’S WALK, a sci-fi/superhero noir novel, which came out May 13 from Seventh Star Press. October 18 will see the debut of FIVE ELEMENTS, a Middle Grade urban fantasy series from HarperCollins.

I’m also currently working on the Dark Horse Comics Young Adult graphic novel series LARP!, co-written with Shawn deLoache, illustrated by Marlin Shoop, and lettered by Gray Gunter, as well as a mobile iOS game that I can't talk about quite yet.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I do indeed have two more books coming -- Gray Widow's Web and Gray Widow's War. My contract specifies that I give Seventh Star Press one book per year, so Book 2 will come out in May 2017, and Book 3 in May 2018. Unless I get them done sooner, which I might.

Social media: ...most publishers expect you either to help out as much as possible with the online marketing, or to do all of the marketing yourself. The thing is, I have never been good at self-promotion. So every time I put myself out there, send out a tweet about my work or write a new blog post, I'm horribly self-conscious about it. I know that's something I just have to get over, but it's been a process. One I'm still going through.

I've been wise enough to know when to ask for help, though. A friend of mine who's much more social media-savvy than I am, Andrea Judy, has become my de facto publicist, and has helped tremendously with the rollout of Gray Widow's Walk. Without her help, the book launch process would have been very different, and much more anemic, I'd say.

Book signings: I have done a few speaking engagements, but most of my public appearances center around sci-fi/fantasy/comics conventions. I'm doing a one-day show in Nashville on June 11, and I'm confirmed for DragonCon in Atlanta Labor Day weekend, as well as Imaginarium in Louisville, Kentucky October 7 - 9.

Covers: The cover process varies greatly from publisher to publisher. I have another series coming out in October, a Middle Grade urban fantasy story called Five Elements, and for that I simply got an email from the publisher, HarperCollins, that said, "Here's your cover!" I had no input, and don't even know the name of the artist. I have no complaints, though, because HC knows what they're doing and the cover is gorgeous.

Time Management: I'm governed almost entirely by deadlines. It's a lot easier for me when I'm given a deadline, but I can set them for myself without too much trouble, and I just work backward from the deadline. I figure out how much time each step of the process is going to take, split that up into days, and go from there. I work from home, and I write in bursts, so while I can realistically crank out fifteen or twenty pages in two or three hours, there's also a good bit of time devoted to reading, playing video games, feeding cats, etc. I try to make it to the gym on a regular basis, too, but sometimes that gets pushed aside if I have a particularly hairy deadline to meet. (I know that's a bad habit.)

Blogging: When I first got started, back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, I had no idea what I was doing. I got sort of a crash course in how to write comics from one of my first editors, Dan Thorsland, but if it hadn't been for him, I would've just flailed around for maybe years before learning what was necessary. So, while part of the blog is just me shooting my mouth off about various issues, the more important bits are about trying to impart what I've learned in an easily-digestible, free-of-charge way. If I can let people know the stuff that I wish I had known to begin with, I'll feel as if I'm pulling my weight a little more.

Reviews: We're reaching out via social media to a lot of different book bloggers and reviewers, and in June I'll be doing my first-ever blog tour. I welcome and appreciate reviews straight from readers, though.

Changing hats: Yeah, right now I'm working in novels, video games, comics, and have a Hollywood thing going on that I'd rather not jinx at this stage. I learned to write comics first, and that was definitely a blessing. Comics have such a rigid, unforgiving format -- page count, panel count, word count, the fact that surprises or big moments should come at the beginning of even-numbered pages because of the page turn, etc.

Author Description:
Faith Mortimer is a wife & mother, dividing her time between Hampshire, UK & Cyprus. Since childhood, she dreamt of writing novels which readers would love, & spent many hours writing short stories which she read to her sisters.

Later her dreams were put on hold while she focused upon her family & careers as a Registered nurse & later overseeing a string of travel & sport related companies.

Born in Manchester & educated in Singapore, Malaya & Hampshire, England.

Interview Excerpt

Next: ...it is now the turn to please my ‘women’s literature’ readers who like a change from psychological thrillers and mystery suspense, with the addition of a touch of edgy contemporary romance. A VERY DISTANT AFFAIR is the fifth novel in the ‘Very Affair’ series, and I’m delighted to let readers of this genre know it is set in London and Australia – hence the ‘distant’ part. This is my 17th full length novel and I am very excited about it. Publication date is the 30th JUNE – on all good book sites!

Social media is important for me. As an independent author, I use sites such as Twitter, Google and Facebook. I have formed many lovely friendships this way over the years, and as a consequence my personal mail list has grown tremendously. My following built gradually and I let readers and fans know whenever I have something to shout about.

Covers: Book covers can be an emotive subject. Some tell us nothing about the story inside, whereas the rest give us a hint or more of what to expect. I like mine to reflect something in line with the subject I’ve written about. I usually have an idea on what I’d like on the cover and either use a personal photograph or find one which fits the bill. I leave the artwork and graphics to my designer to play around with and he comes up with the finished product. Sometimes I do involve my readers over titles and whether they like the graphics/picture etc. usually in the form of a competition. The results can be surprising!

Short stories can be surprisingly difficult to write especially if the word count is kept within a certain number. Imagine; putting everything into 3500 words, complete with characters’ descriptions, start, middle and end of story and it has to be an all-round captivating tale! I’ve used shorty’s to compliment my full-length novels and sue different tenses and POV as teasers.

Bundles: Readers can become hooked on series, but I am aware that not everyone can afford to keep buying books. Placing a number of series books in a bundle means that it is a cheap attractive option, and a thank you to my readers. Book bundles can have enormous impact on sales, especially when offered in conjunction with an additional special offer.

Giveaways: Free can be an excellent way of increasing readership and awareness – especially making the first one of a series free. I have the 1st Diana Rivers free at the moment – The Assassins’ Village – and it is boosting sales of other books in that series.

Living in the UK: My biggest audience is in the UK, with the US and Cyprus next. I divide my time between the UK and Cyprus, so have many personal friends in both countries who readily support and buy my books. I market online with social media and occasional paid advertisements.

Author Description:
Libby Fischer Hellmann is a critically acclaimed crime writer loved by readers the world over for her compulsively readable thrillers and strong female characters. Her fast-paced crime fiction spans 12 novels and over 20 short stories. She has also edited a popular crime fiction anthology called Chicago Blues. Her newest novel, (the first Ellie Foreman book in 10 years), JUMP CUT, will be released by Poisoned Pen Press in March, 2016.

With critics describing her work as "masterful" and "meticulously researched", it's not hard to see why Libby's thrilling and richly varied crime novels have won numerous awards. Libby is exceptionally committed to her work, and in 2005-2006 she was the National President of Sisters in Crime, a 3,400+ member organization dedicated to strengthening the voice of female mystery writers.

You can keep up to date with all Libby's news and views over at her blog, http://libbyhellmann.com/blog.

Libby started out in broadcast news, beginning her career as an assistant film editor for NBC News in New York before moving back to DC to work with Robin MacNeil and Jim Lehrer at N-PACT, the public affairs production arm of PBS. Retrained as an assistant director when Watergate broke, Libby helped produce PBS's night-time broadcast of the hearings. She went on to work for public relations firm Burson-Marsteller in Chicago in 1978, where she stayed until she left to found Fischer Hellmann Communications in 1985.

Originally from Washington, D.C.--where, she says, "When you're sitting around the dinner table gossiping about the neighbors, you're talking politics"-- Libby earned a Masters Degree in Film Production from New York University and a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to writing, multi-talented Libby writes and produces videos, and conducts speaker training programs in platform speaking, presentation skills, media training and crisis communications.

Libby's best-selling novels have won widespread acclaim, with her first novel, An Eye for Murder, nominated for several awards and described by Publisher's Weekly as "a masterful blend of politics, history, and suspense."

Libby is known for her portrayal of strong female characters. An Eye for Murder introduced Ellie Foreman, a video producer and single mother who went on to star in several more novels in a series described by Libby as "a cross between Desperate Housewives and 24." Libby's second series followed the Chicago PI Georgia Davis, a no-nonsense detective who has been featured in three books so far, with a fourth due out next year. In addition to her hugely popular series, Libby has also written three standalone thrillers in diverse settings and historical periods that demonstrate her versatility as a writer. Through her "Revolution Trilogy," (Set the Night on Fire, A Bitter Veil, and Havana Lost) we meet young activists during the late Sixties, a young American woman who marries and moves to Tehran, and a female Mafia boss who chases power at the expense of love.

And if you've read this far, you deserve a gift! Sign up for Libby's newsletter and get a FREE copy of EASY INNOCENCE, the first mystery in the Georgia Davis PI series!

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Armand Rosamilia is a New Jersey boy currently living in sunny Florida, where he writes when he's not sleeping. He's happily married to a woman who helps his career and is supportive, which is all he ever wanted in life...

He's written over 150 stories that are currently available, including horror, zombies, contemporary fiction, thrillers and more. His goal is to write a good story and not worry about genre labels.

He runs two very successful podcasts on Project iRadio, too...

Arm Cast: Dead Sexy Horror Podcast - interviewing fellow authors as well as filmmakers, musicians, etc.

Arm N Toof's Dead Time Podcast - with co-host Mark Tufo, the duo interview authors and filmmakers and anyone else they feel like talking to

He also loves to talk in third person... because he's really that cool. He's a proud Active member of HWA as well.
