Author Description:
DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the bestselling author of two award-winning thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-ass women characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

Raised in the Midwest, she earned a BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Several cross-country moves later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, a chef-turned-contractor, and several imaginary characters who love to tell her what to do. Her most recent books include Cargo, The Body Market, Bad Traffick, A One Way Ticket to Dead, and Yucatán Dead.

Interview Excerpt

Congratulations on your book: Cargo. Next: Working on the currently untitled prequel to the series. After that… I’ll be writing the next book in my other thriller series featuring Kate Jones.

Social media is key to building a solid reader base, and is a great way to connect to other authors. I’ve also met some great book bloggers/reviewers, many of whom have become friends.

I’m available on all the usual suspects like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et al, and LOVE to hear from readers. I also have an event page on both my website and blog, so readers can go there and check out whether I’ll be in their area in the future.

Great covers: When I first started publishing, I designed my own covers, but since then have used a couple of different designers. I recently re-branded the Leine Basso series using Deranged Doctor Designs.

Audio books: I love audio books, and was stoked to be able to offer that version to readers. The audio book segment of the reading public has exploded in recent years and I’ve certainly added new readers because of it

Novellas: My first published book was Bad Spirits, a novella and the first installment in the Kate Jones thriller series. I wrote it specifically for an online publisher who had read Touring for Death (now the fourth book in the series) and requested I write the back story for the character, Kate, to publish as a serial.

Bundling: I like to make things easy for readers—box sets make it easy for folks to find and read all of the books in the series, and allows for a seamless reading experience. Also, I usually price them lower than if they bought them all individually. The sets do tend to cannibalize sales of the separate books a bit but I’d rather give readers more choice.

Giveaways: To paraphrase the saying, “Free has been very, very good to me.” Back in the old days of eBooks (ca. 2010-2012), as an unknown author with a small budget I didn’t have a lot of options for readers to discover my work. Giving away free copies worked really well. I doubt I’d be able to write full time if I hadn’t been able to take advantage of all the avenues…

Reader list: I find a reader list to be one of the most valuable ways to really connect with readers who enjoy my work. As I mentioned in the answer above, I offer free books to all new subscribers, and I’ll do giveaways and special, subscriber-only offers for the list throughout the year.

Virtual Audio Book Halloween party: Author/artist Uvi Poznansky put the party together with the goal of introducing new readers to our audio books… We had a great turnout, and there were some fabulous audio books on offer! It was fun and I got to meet so many new readers and authors. I’ll make sure to tell Uvi you enjoyed the cover presentation—she created all of the promotional material—basically all we had to do was show up and post excerpts.

Author Description:
Born in Occupied Japan, schooled in Asia, now a 20 year resident of Latin America, Linton Robinson's status as a born outsider is reflected in his books.

Robinson worked as journalist for years, winning awards and placing articles in top American magazine and newspaper markets. This was followed by a brief career as a photographer, also with credits in top markets. He then moved into mail order catalogs, with noted success, before switching to newspapers in Mexico and Guatemala. His syndicated columns "Flesh Wounds" and "Weekend Warrior" were cult favorites in the nineties.

He is currently working on novels and screenplays and doing videos.

Interview Excerpt

Next: …one answer is clear: series. Probably the biggest concept in successful book marketing/discovery and I was too dumb to realize that years ago. I will be extending the series started with “Mary of Angels”… an easy pick since it began life as a television series proposal.

eBooks changed EVERYTHING, created worlds. For me even more so than others. I wish they had come along when I was in my twenties. There are so many advantages; like correctability, pricing, accommodation of different lengths.

Covers: . I’m mostly happy with them… though some of the early ones like “Sweet Spot” are kind of embarrassing now. I have no art talent and no training. I think a lot of writers can do covers if they take a little time to figure out what the elements of covers are all about. I ran a series on how to make your own covers on the Indies Unlimited blog.

Book trailers: I made all my book “trailer” videos myself. Again, with no training, skills or particular talent. I caught the “video bug” for a while and was cranking them out. Even more than covers, I see videos as something the average writer is very capable of producing.., and very possibly do more effectively than professionals.

Short stories: I have done a lot of short work, but very little in traditional “short story” form. Much of it walks an odd line between fiction and reporting. I’m not sure how much crossover or “sell up” there is from shorts to novels. But shorts material is excellent grist for the promo mill when given away as samples or “lead bait” or whatever.

Giveaways: I’m a huge believer in the judicious use of freebies to build “discovery”, and argue adamantly against those who think their work is so wonderful they need to overprice it for the market and not deign to offer free or discounted “loss leaders”.

Reader list: Mailing lists are a huge concern of mine, especially recently. I have been building lists and mailing to them (I got used to regarding a 4 percent open rate as successful during my brief career in direct mail marketing back in the pre-email days). I build lists any way I can think of. Including offering wonderfully helpful documents for free to get contacts… as you’ve already noticed.

Author Description:
International bestselling author Ashley Fontainne is an avid reader of mostly the classics. Ashley became a fan of the written word in her youth, starting with the Nancy Drew mystery series. Stories that immerse the reader deep into the human psyche and the monsters that lurk within us are her favorite reads.

Her muse for penning the EVISCERATING THE SNAKE series was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Ashley's love for this book is what sparked her desire to write her debut novel, Accountable to None, the first book in the trilogy. With a modern setting to the tale, Ashley delves into just what lengths a person is willing to go when they seek personal justice for heinous acts perpetrated upon them. The second novel in the series, Zero Balance focuses on the cost and reciprocal cycle that obtaining revenge has on the seeker. For once the cycle starts, where does it end? How far will the tendrils of revenge expand? Adjusting Journal Entries answered that question: far and wide.

Her short thriller entitled Number Seventy-Five, touches upon the sometimes dangerous world of online dating. Number Seventy-Five took home the BRONZE medal in fiction/suspense at the 2013 Readers' Favorite International Book Awards contest and is currently in production for a feature film.

Her paranormal thriller entitled The Lie, won the GOLD medal in the 2013 Illumination Book Awards for fiction/suspense and is also in production for a feature film entitled Foreseen.

Summer 1956: Thirteen-year-old Willie Compton and his younger brother Leonard stumble upon a mine shaft while hiking the hills of Park City, Utah. The shaft is unsealed, abandoned. A Slinky in Leonard's hands slithers through his fingers, tumbling toward the mouth of the shaft. Leonard bolts forward, but he slips, then he falls.

The Legendary Women of World History

Laurel A. Rockefeller

AVAILABLE at Amazon
Barnes and Noble
KOBO

Now at last three Legendary Women of World History biographies in a single boxed set volume.

Joined together by more than just blood, French Princess Catherine de Valois (queen consort to King Henry V of England) and her descendants Queen Elizabeth Tudor of England and Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland dramatically changed the world as we know it, daring to do the extraordinary and risking everything in a time when women held few legal rights as individuals.

Begin the journey with “Catherine de Valois.” As King Henry V of England invades France in his bloodthirsty war of conquest and terror, Princess Catherine is forced by her father’s paranoid schizophrenia and a civil war at home with the Burgundians into marriage with one man she hates most. Yet hope is not lost for the reluctant queen of England as Owain Ap Tudor, son of a Welsh freedom fighter, earns a key position in the royal household thanks to his valour on the field of Agincourt. Their meeting changed the world forever in this fascinating story of love, loss, and war.

Next, discover the reign of Queen Mary Stuart in “Mary Queen of the Scots.” Most people focus on how Queen Mary died, but in truth Mary was the glittering “people’s princess” of the 16th century whose mark on Scottish culture and Edinburgh in particular shines brightly to this day. Contending with the violent Scottish reformation (literally conducted at the point of swords), Queen Mary’s beauty, compassion, and glittering court won the hearts and minds of the common people in defiance of the rich and powerful exploiting the poor. Meet the real Queen Mary and celebrate her life!

Finally, go behind the curtain of Queen Elizabeth Tudor in “Queen Elizabeth Tudor: Journey to Gloriana.” Told through the lens of her relationship with Robert Dudley you will go beyond the glamour of her court to meet the bright, sensitive, and passionate woman she really was.

Each book in this boxed set includes period music, timelines, and comprehensive bibliographies so you can keep learning.

Author Description:
I once thought a great mystery or fantasy book with strong romantic themes was the highest level of reading bliss. After reading my first romantic suspense novel, I never looked back. Before long, the need to create my own stories took over. I spend my days in the clinical profession of medical transcriptionist, but my passion is in the blissful hours spent with my characters in the evenings.

I live in the western United States, and when I'm not writing I love playing cards with my family, bowling, and snuggling with my lazy kitties.
