SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: Three Days to Forever. What do you have on the drawing board next? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Well, actually I have two projects on the drawing board. Open Season for Murder, the tenth Mac Faraday has just been released (June 1, 20150) and is already getting rave reviews.

Spring is in the air. In Deep Creek Lake, the burst of blossoms on the trees has the effect of a starting pistol in the race to get the resort area ready in time for the seasonal residents return to Spencer, Maryland.

This year, the Spencer Inn, Mac Faraday’s five-star resort, has the added duty of preparing for the Diablo Ball, an annual benefit event that used to kick off Deep Creek Lake’s summer season. The exclusive gala has drawn in A-listers from across the country—including suspects and witnesses connected to Ashton Piedmont, a young woman who had disappeared while skinny dipping in Deep Creek Lake five years earlier—days after the last Diablo Ball.

Intrigued by a mysterious phone call from a young woman claiming to be Ashton, retired homicide detective Mac Faraday can’t resist diving head first into the cold case. But he’s not the only one. Someone behind the scenes has gone to a lot of trouble to bring Ashton Piedmont’s friends and enemies to the Diablo Ball—which promises to be a gala event to die for!

Then, readers can be looking for Kill and Run, the first Thorny Rose Mystery, on September 1. Kill and Run continues with the Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday series premise introduced in Three Days to Forever.

Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

Before long, the case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Lieutenant Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to shift through the a web of lies and cover-ups. Before long, they uncover a decades’ long conspiracy to protect one of Washington’s rising stars. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a ruthlessly ambitious killer?

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?

The Internet and social media has had a huge impact on my success. As a matter of fact, I have come to rely heavily on it. I do practically all of my book promotion online. As a matter of fact, I rarely do in-person book events anymore. When I release a new book, press releases will go out to our local media, but I never follow them up or pursue local in-person events because I have better success with virtual book tours and the social media.

Approximately a month before a new release, I will send out advance review copies (uncorrected proofs) to book reviewers, most of whom are bloggers and online book reviewers. I will also book a virtual book tour through a coordinator that includes book reviews, guest posts, and interviews—all of which is online.

My business manager, who is also my husband, and I track my sales daily and we have discovered that on days that I am not on twitter, my sales will drop fifteen to twenty percent.

New authors need to wrap their heads around the idea that book promotion is not a sprint. It is a marathon that never stops. Building an audience does not happen overnight. It is something that you work at every single day. The disheartening fact is that very often, when you are starting out, you can’t see that success. It comes a little bit at a time—so little that you can’t see it until a year has gone by and you look back and realize, “Hey, a year ago I was selling four books a week, now I’m selling a book a day. That’s something.”

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

My website has a link to my Constant Contact address book which enable readers who want to be on my mailing list to sign up. I will send out newsletter about upcoming releases and personal appearances (usually community education classes). Mainly, I keep in touch with my readers through Facebook and Twitter.

You do a lot of book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? When and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

Readers can keep up with my personal appearances by visiting my website at www.mysterylady.net.
My viritual book tour schedule is listed on the appearance page: http://mysterylady.net/Appearances.php

In mid-August, I will start a two month tour for Three Days to Forever and Kill and Run through iRead Book Tours:

http://www.ireadbooktours.com/upcoming-tours.html.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

All of my book covers are designed by Todd Aune of Projeto Communications: http://www.projetoonline.com/ Todd and I worked together to create a basic theme for the Thorny Rose Mysteries, which includes the logo on each book cover of the rose and heart with the thorn and a drop of blood.

My theme and brand has pretty much developed throughout the years. Todd and I do work closely together, even though he is on the west coast and I am on the east. When I am well into a book, I will notify Todd with the synopsis and any ideas I may have for it.

When it comes to cover design, authors need to be flexible. Sometimes, what an author may visualize won’t come off when the book cover is seen online. You have to remember that nowadays, most readers are seeing a thumbnail of the book cover on a website. The perfect shade of blue that you have driven the cover designer crazy to match may look completely different based on reader’s computer monitors.

Sometimes, I confess, I have no idea whatsoever. In those cases, I will tell Todd, “Surprise me.” This is what happened with the cover for The Lady Who Cried Murder. I had no idea what I wanted and Todd hit a home run with the first proof simply by reading the synopsis!

You have written a short story called Beauty to Die For and Other Mystery Shorts. Can you tell us if they had an impact on the sales of your novels? Are shorty’s one of your styles of writing or are they created to give readers a sample of your work?

Both. I am not a short story writer. I confess. However, A Gnarly Christmas came to me one day during the Christmas season a few years ago. I wrote it in one afternoon, uploaded it to Amazon the next day and it has been selling every day since!

Actually, most of the short stories I have written are left-overs, for lack of a better term. I keep a cut-scenes file for every book, in which I place scenes that have been cut, subplots that didn’t work out, or other “darlings” that I had to kill during my writing process.

The short story, Beauty to Die For is actually the original plotline for Shades of Murder, which was dropped during the writing process. Killing Bid was the original beginning of a Mac Faraday Mystery that didn’t pan out. Both stories didn’t have enough to make into full fledge books, but I realized that with some work, they would make entertaining little treats for readers.

I like the idea of bundling a series of novels. You have put together a set of your novels called The Mac Faraday Mysteries Box Set. What was the impact on your other sales? What was your main objective in bundling your novels?

To tell you the truth, I was scared to death about bundling my books. I was sincerely afraid that doing so would reduce the sales of each book as a single. However, to my surprise, this has not happened. Some readers will buy all four books at once, while others will buy one at a time, buying the next book separately after finishing the previous one.

The bundled books do sell regularly. As a matter of fact, the success of the bundled books has inspired me to stretch my wings with a mystery that will stretch over all of my series. In 2017, be looking for a Lauren Carr four-pack: one book for each series (Thorny Rose, Lovers in Crime, Mac Faraday, and then ending with a return to the Thorny Rose featuring Mac Faraday and the Lovers in Crime). This four-pack will feature a single mystery in each book, with a larger mystery that will arc over all four books. I’m looking forward to writing it and I’m sure my readers will be looking forward to reading it.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

I give away ebooks like candy! Sometimes I will give away print books, but I don’t ship out of the US because it costs too much.

My success with free promos has been much better than other authors. It was a free-promo that brought me to the attention of readers. In August 2012, I did a free promotion for It’s Murder, My Son, the first Mac Faraday Mystery. This promotion ran for five days. I gave away 36,000 books in five days! It’s Murder, My Son went up to number one in mysteries for free books on Amazon! Yep, I got no royalties for those freebies.

However, after the promotion was over, It’s Murder, My Son went up to number one in Mysteries for paid sales and the sales continued for weeks. Every day for weeks, readers were posting tremendous reviews for It’s Murder, My Son and they were buying my other books.

That was when I broke through as a mystery writer. Until that promotion, I was selling one book a day. Now, I am listed on Amazon in the top-100 police procedural authors. So, I am a big fan for giveaways when it comes to ebooks. It worked for me.

What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?

My tour coordinator does set up for reviewers for my book tour. When advance review copies are ready, I do have a list of proven reviewers who I notify. Also, I will post it on Facebook, Twitter, and the rest of my social media. I never pay for a review.

Unfortunately, I can’t answer the question of why I get so many reviews. My readers post reviews. However, I know of several excellent authors who get good reviews, but they don’t get as many reviews as I receive. I have concluded that it is connected to the reading audience. Some reading audiences post reviews while others don’t.

Tell us about Acorn Book Services and the services Acorn provides?

Here’s the story of Acorn Book Services:

In 2004, my debut mystery, A Small Case of Murder was a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Award. On the heels of that success, she accepted an offer from a traditional publisher for A Reunion to Die For. When it came time to publish her third book, It’s Murder, My Son, I had an ah-hah moment.

While pursuing my BA (in English and Journalism) from George Mason University, I was an editor and layout design artist for the federal government. She also wrote a weekly column and did editing for newspapers and magazines. I had accumulated over twenty years of experience in the publishing industry and didn’t even realize it. I kept thinking of book publishing as this magical world that resided only in New York.

I could publish my own books and do it well.

So, I rejected offers from two traditional publishers, choosing instead to independently publish It’s Murder, My Son, which has made it to #1 in sales on Amazon in cozy mysteries (ebooks). Needless to say, I have not regretted my decision.

Realizing that I could use my experiences to help other writers achieve their dreams to become published authors, I established Acorn Book Services. We provide publishing services for authors, from simply consulting to editorial review to editing to layout design to ebook formatting. We can also provide a full-service publishing service where we do it all. The author keeps all the rights and the royalties go straight from the distributors to the author. They can visit Acorn Book Services website (www.acornbookservices.com) for more information.

A Small Case of Murder - A Joshua Thornton Mystery
Best-Selling Mystery Author Lauren Carr's debut novel, A Small Case of Murder (originally published in 2004) is set in the quaint West Virginia town of Chester, where everyone knows everyone, and there is never a secret that someone doesn’t know. In such an intimate town, how many suspicious deaths can be left unquestioned?

Following his wife’s death, Joshua Thornton leaves a promising career in the U. S. Navy’s JAG division to move across country with his five children into his ancestral home. While clearing out the attic they find a letter written to their grandmother postmarked 34 years ago.

In the letter Lulu Jefferson wrote “…Remember that dead body we found in the Bosley barn?...I saw him today…I went to talk to the reverend and there was his picture on the wall.” What dead body? His interest piqued, Joshua asks about Lulu and finds that in 1970 she died on the same day that she penned the letter implicating the pastor in an unreported murder. There is much more to this story than a 34-year-old letter. It’s a 34-year-old mystery!

Asking simple questions about events long ago could prove to be deadly for Joshua and his family.
