Rose grew up in New York City mostly in the labyrinthine galleries of the Metropolitan Museum, the dark tunnels and lush gardens of Central Park and reading her mother's favorite books before she was allowed. Rose's work has appeared in many magazines including Oprah Magazine and she has been featured in the New York Times, Newsweek, WSJ, Time, USA Today and on the Today Show, and NPR radio. Rose graduated from Syracuse University, spent the '80s in advertising, has a commercial in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and since 2005 has run the first marketing company for authors - Authorbuzz.com
The television series PAST LIFE, was based on Rose's novels in the Reincarnationist series. She is one of the founding board members of International Thriller Writers and currently serves, with Lee Child, as the organization's co-president..
SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author
Congratulations on your books: The Collector of Dying Breaths and What To Do Before Your Book Launch. What do you have on the drawing board next? Rumor has it that you have another book on the horizon called THE WITCH OF PAINTED SORROWS. Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?
In my case, and for many authors, social media hasn’t help build my following – quite the opposite. I think that readers find me and then come to FB or Twitter to stay in touch and find out what’s new and what’s next.
I think it's a great relationship builder but I dislike using social media to promote my books and definitely don’t rely on it for that. I mostly post about other people’s books I’ve read and write about or link to articles and essays that fit within the world of what I find interesting. I often include the kind of things I post on my blog, Museum of Mysteries, articles and links to things I’m interested in; art, archeology, the esoteric, the aesthetic, and all strange and curious phenomena.
Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?
I have a newsletter, yes. I think it’s critical for an author to keep one so you can alert fans when a new book is out. Like social media, it helps cement relationships. I try to send one out four times a year –no more than that - I don’t want to overstay my welcome. And I include items about books other than my own and subjects I think will be of interest to my readers — the same way I do on FB and my blog. In terms of building the list, I have a link to it on my social media sites and on my website and I do advertising via AuthorBuzz, my marketing company, to invite people to sign up.
You do a lot of book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? When and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

Several of you novels have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience?
I don’t have any sense of how one has impacted the other but I’m a huge audio book listener and it matters to me a lot that my books are available in audio. I’m especially proud of the quality of the narration – my dream narrator - Phil Gigante has done all of the books – some with the amazing Natalie Ross.
I like the idea of Author bundles. You are a part of a novel collection called Desperate Acts showcased on the HBS Mystery Reader’s Circle.
What was the impact on your other sales? What was the main objective of bundling your works with other romance authors? How did you put something like that together?
It’s all about brand building.
Coke and Pepsi and McDonald’s and BMW advertise all year long... building a brand is all about getting out there and staying out there.
But authors don’t have the money to do formal advertising all year long. Adding things during the year like bundles and 99c sales and Goodreads giveaways before a new book comes out, help keep our names in front of readers. And that’s the goal – stay visible.
You are the co-president of International Thriller Writers. Do they help with the writing, marketing and the publishing process?
Yes they offer authors all kinds of help. Our annual conference ThrillerFest offers writing and marketing and publishing help, panels and classes via Craft Fest, Master Craft Fest and Pitch Fest .
In addition during the year, starting last year, we began offering Thriller School on line.
What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?
I have a very strong opinion about this. Before 2009 giving books worked great to help get buzz and word of mouth but we’ve given books away to the point that we’re in trouble. A huge percentage of readers have learned that there are so many books given away they can pretty much read free all the time now and not bother to buy any books. As well all too often they enter to win a book they want to read but never hear back that they didn’t win and forget about the book. With my books we give away a certain number the months before the book comes out, but once the book is out – I’ll only do two kinds of free book contests. One if the site or newsletter hosting the contest announces the winners to the whole list when the contest is over so all the people who entered know they didn’t win. Or if I get the email addresses of the people entering – so I can write each entrant back and say – sorry you didn’t win but here’s a link to buy the book and a new review. We only give away a few advanced reading copies to reviewers and bloggers.
You provide a marketing service for authors called AuthorBuzz. How can authors find this valuable service and take advantage of this opportunity?
