Author Description:
I was born in the town of Warwick in 1981. It is a small historical town in the heart of England, and ? was the fifth child born into a family of boys. I developed a huge interest in the written world from a young age, and with more than a little help from Roald Dahl found quite the taste for anything gross and gory. Book club at primary school only proved to increase my love of escaping into the world of a book.

Whilst six years at secondary school did little to quell the romantic notion of one day sitting in my mountain cabin and smoking a celebratory cigarette as the first novel was born, somewhere within those six years the dream of becoming a writer got put on hold. The question of who actually manages to make a living out of being writer was persistently posed. Who manages to pull that off? Not many, according to most people. Perhaps it was because science was deemed a safer career path, or perhaps it was because they let me chop up hearts, but I found myself spending more and more time in the biology lab and eventually the university applications went in and the next twelve years employment were set; science, hearts, but yet sadly no more dissections. Still resting quietly in the background were those long and lingering desires to once again rediscover those old aspirations to write.

About six years ago, with the smouldering embers of a childhood dream sparking uncomfortably underfoot there was what can only be called an epiphany. Who is it that actually becomes a writer? Is it the people who live in New York? Is it the girl whose aunt works for Harper Collins or S&S, or another beast of a publishing house? It is those people, yes. But it's not just those people. It's the people who write.

It's the people who actually do more than say, 'I have a dream'. Whilst this may sound simplistic, it was the revelation I needed to sit down and type Chapter One. The first book, The Loss of Deference was no longer just a fantasy and slowly became a workable manuscript. It was then sent out in eagerness before it was properly edited and therefore it was duly returned, and along with it I collected a nice set of standard rejection letters.

Six years later, having uprooted from England to settle on the southern Mediterranean shores of Cyprus, the dream to publish the book once deemed nothing more than a pipe dream is now a reality. I am still working as a part time scientist, but I am also writing daily. When I am not sat at the computer typing about the darker side of life, you will find me hiking in the mountains, drinking frappe at the beach, or talking to myself in the kitchen in the style of an American celebrity chef. Just think Ina Garten.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: The Dawn: Everybody is Somebody. What do you have on the drawing board next? Rumor has it that you have another book on the horizon called The Dawn: Man in the Middle. Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Thank you! The Dawn: Everybody is Somebody is the third book in my dystopian Sci-Fi series. Man in the Middle is book number four. The series follows a small population of survivors of a nuclear war. It deals with the concept of courage when it is easier to do nothing, moving past the mistakes you made in the old world, and learning to adapt as life changes. All done under the totalitarian regime called the Republic of New Omega who want to make things ‘easier’ for you, of course.

You have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been? How did you build your following in your niche? Do you see a carry over to your writing success?

I believe social media is important, but not the most important element of being a writer. I do think it is important for making connections and being in touch with the community of writers, but I think it is much more important to focus on what you are producing. I used to be more prolific on Twitter, Facebook, and my blog, but lately I have cut it down to a bare minimum and focus solely on putting meaningful words on a page. Word count went up, sales didn’t go down. The important thing about SM is being real. On my Twitter page over the last month you will likely have seen my cat, something I ate for lunch, and an article about womb transplantation. I’m not sure I shared anything about a book I wrote. People do not want to read ‘buy my book’ all day long. They know how to use the unfollow button, too.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

I do, because it is important to be in contact with the people who read your work. I have sign-up links on my website and in my books. I always find sign-ups increase after a promotion, and I try to get a newsletter out every six to eight weeks. These are people who actively have told you they want to hear more about you, and that makes them very valuable. What’s the point in not contacting those people?

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

Thanks for that! I take little credit for them. I did create the cover for my latest short story called Containment, but for my full length novels and series I use the services of a great designer. She works with me to develop an idea, we discuss concepts, and work from her early creations. I love the Psychophilia cover, and I also love The Dawn series that she created. She is blowing me away with her work right now.

You have several great book trailers. (See links below.) They look very professional. Do you know how much impact they have had on your book’s success? Tell us about the process that you used to create your trailers?

I created my trailers, so thanks for the positive words. I do not much like the trailer for Escaping Life if I am honest and find it monotonous. That could also be said for The Loss of Deference, but I think for that story it somehow still works. I love my latest trailer for The Dawn, and it still gives me goose bumps! It is an effort to achieve, but I create them with standard software, stock footage, and a lot of patience. I really enjoy the experience, but I’m not sure what level of impact it has on sales. But I have got some very positive feedback, and perhaps it made one person try a new author, so for minimal investment it is a good return. But equally a bad trailer could put me off a book. If it doesn’t look professional, I think it is better not to have it.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

I verge between positive and negative thoughts on giving away my books for free. I do use the Amazon Select program, and there is no doubt that it has yielded sales and results. I think it is very important to combine free giveaways with good advertising, and this is what makes the biggest difference. Having a perma-free first in a series seems to be a good option for me. The negative is that many people who would never otherwise read your book will download it, hate it, and leave a negative review. That’s the downside, but it can still help with traction. Giveaways for groups who love a certain genre have also provided good results, and I am always happy to throw a paperback at that kind of giveaway.

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed, marketing your books and supporting indie authors. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, take care of the social media and maintain your blog?

Well, the blog has taken a bit of a backseat just lately. I try to use it as a tool to share my work and my thoughts about the publishing world, but at the same time, not make it all about my books. One thing that I like about the world of indie publishing is the willingness to share data with other writers, so I also try to put anything I think might be useful for other writers like stats after promos.

Time management is a major factor, and really it would be possible to never leave my desk and still never catch up. That is one reason I have let my blog take a backseat. Important updates still go out, but I try to focus my energies on my books.

Living in Cyprus creates a unique selling and marketing situation. Where is your biggest audience? Does marketing online help in this situation?

My biggest market fluctuates between the US and the UK. Living in Cyprus does not help either of those markets, but certainly being in Cyprus helps carve out time for writing. But because of my location, online sales are very important.

Being a self-publisher myself, I have to ask this question. How does doing everything yourself work out? Do you outsource much of the process?

Editing and book covers are predominantly outsourced. For the short story I have created my own cover because I do not expect a great return on a $0.99 quick read. Doing everything myself is not possible. Any self publisher who manages the whole load, I take my hat off to them.

What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?

Occasionally prior to release I will seek reviewers from the book reading community and bloggers. If they have expressed an interest in my previous work or similar books, then I assume there is a chance they might like my latest. But other than that I tend to just let them roll in slowly. Real reviews are much better than anything solicited, and I have a thick skin so I can take the knocks as well as the praise. What I don’t do is trade with other authors. I have so many books that I want to read, I cannot spend all my reading time on solicited books, and I will not review something I haven’t read. Plus, I think most people can tell a real review from a fake.
