Author Description: Writer and screenwriter.

The first thing that I was ever proud of was writing a story. Then I went to school and after that got a real job. I’ve worked in and around film and television since 1995. I started in technical support for Silicon Graphics based special effects tools and very quickly thought that it’d be much more fun on the other side of things. Moving over to production, I worked with a number of animation companies, ending up in all sorts of director, script editor and writer roles for web and television. Which was like that very first thing I did, but with bigger budgets.

And then somewhere in the middle of that I wrote the first part of a strange scifi comedy series, ‘Jan and The Spooky Periscope Incident’ which was published early 2012. I’ve recently completed my first novel, a dark psychological thriller – Undreamed, which is available on Amazon now. Two very different stories, but I’m a fan of contrast.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Let’s start with what’s next. Rumor has it that you have a couple books on the horizon: one, an Urban Fantasy and the other a psychological horror novel. Can you tell us their names, the timeline for their release and give us a little tease for our readers?

Yes, I’ve got two books cooking. The first, an Urban Fantasy which I hope to release around the middle of next year is called The Transcendents. Our world is slowly being unmade by an ancient magic gone toxic, and the only mages powerful enough to stop this are destroying one another in a blood feud. The Transcendents tells the story of Nick Lejune, the first Transcendent mage born in two generations and how he must unravel bitter lies and betrayals in order to save not only himself, but the world.

The Transcendents will be a serialised novel of six episodes around ten chapters each. I’ve never written a serialised novel before, and it’s fascinating discovering the right pace and voice. The Transcendents is dark, magical and fast. It’s a change of pace from Undreamed, and a blast to write.

The second book, which I hope to release early 2014 is called Godless. When Tara Laskin goes to the Town of Wolenbrook (known as the Mary Celeste of mining towns) to do a piece for her newspaper commemorating the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of the whole town's population in 1973, she unlocks a mystery both hideous and desperately personal. As she becomes haunted by the spirits of the missing, she’s forced to question her own identity and sanity as she confronts the darkest of Wolenbrook’s many secrets.

I grew up in a mining town in a desert region in Australia, so this story has a special resonance. Whilst writing Undreamed, I especially enjoyed the more paranormal moments, and this story is a deep extension of that interest.

You have a great twitter following. (In excess of 12K followers) How important are your social media relationships that you’ve formed? Do you see a carry over to your writing success?

That’s such an interesting question. I wasn’t very active on social media sites until the beginning of this year, and in truth I was quite skeptical of the whole thing. Like many authors though, I realized the need to build this ubiquitous so-called ‘platform’ and understood that social media would be key to that.

I chose twitter because it felt like it was the most accessible forum for making connections and sharing information. I’m relatively inactive on Facebook, Goodreads etc. but plan to change that next year. I like using Twitter because it’s a great way to sample across other reader’s and writer’s views, and good broadcast point if I have any news to share. It’s become central to how I communicate now.

In terms of carry over, it hasn’t much affected sales but it’s definitely increased awareness and helped enormously in connecting to other writers and publishing people. Most of the authors I interview on my blog come from Twitter connections - or referrals from them - and through that I’m able to get a much broader understanding on the state of indie publishing than I ever could if I tried to research it.

I like the book trailer you have for ‘Undreamed’ especially the sound of wind and water in the background. Also one of the clips had a thud at the end when the most important part was coming; your book cover. I thought that was quite effective in getting the viewer’s attention. (See link below.)

Do you know how much impact it had on your book's success? Tell us about the process that you used to create your trailers? Do you do them yourself or did you outsource them?

Thank you. I read somewhere that book trailers shouldn’t try to be film trailers, and I agree with that sentiment completely. I’m generally not a fan of trailers with volumes of text, or scenes from the book, however well produced. Having said that, I think trailers can have their place in the spectrum of advertising, but they need to bring something different to the table.

The trailers for Undreamed are pretty abstract, but they explore some of the subtexts of the book and are meant to capture more of the emotion of the central character, Alice.

I should say that I was interested in producing the trailers more as an extension of the storytelling than as marketing tools. After such an intense period writing/editing it was refreshing to explore some of these aspects in a different media.

It’s hard to tell. I can track links back from the trailers to the blog, but how many ultimately convert is difficult to figure.

As to process: I did them all myself. In a former life I used to work in post-production, graphics and effects, so I called on some of that to put them together. As I mentioned above, I wasn’t interested in quoting from the books or re-creating scenes, but in capturing a feeling.

So first, I figured out the theme of the trailer then sought out some key imagery to support that. The audio I sourced from generic audio effects cds and edited/mixed it to work. It’s always interesting how many subtle (and not so subtle) effects end up going in. I put it together with Final Cut Pro (Apple). Since much of the emotional state of Alice is dark and disturbed, I made use of number of distortions to amplify that. Each trailer took about a day to produce.

One of the trailers ‘Alice’s Poem’ is actually an old visual poem I created about eighteen years ago. It perfectly captured her mood, so I included it as well. I find it interesting that perhaps the genesis of this character may have been partially due to that poem.

What kinds of support groups do you belong too? Do they help with writing, marketing and the publishing process?

I have a small, close group of friends and supporters who I use to help get the book into the world. I use these people to read early drafts and critique the story. They’re also very helpful in fine tuning the voice of the stories, as it changes so much from book to book. In terms of writing, I’m actually looking for a writers’ group at the moment; the type of critical feedback and encouragement these groups bring is so valuable. At the moment, I handle the marketing, but again, am looking to team up with someone to help with this.

Have you ever done a book tour before? Along with that, when do you start the marketing process for a new book? Give a brief outline of the steps you go through to get your book to market.

I can’t say I have, but am planning one later for Undreamed. When I began Undreamed, I didn’t have a strong perspective on marketing or how it connected to a book’s presence in this overwhelming marketplace, but what I have learned is that marketing (in my mind - communication) starts very early.

I’m beginning to talk about The Transcendents (and even Godless) now, long before they’re finished. Very soon I’ll blog about them, and start talking about specifics. I think the big difference between social media/old media is that it’s social, that is, two way. I want to share my enthusiasm for the stories and talk with people about them.

Once there’s something more substantial, I’ll begin to post excepts on my site, twitter and the blog and listen keenly for feedback. Following that I’ll post the cover designs.

By this point, hopefully there’s some interest in the books, which I can capture in mailing lists. Prior to launch I’ll seek (honest) reviews and begin to promote the books via twitter, Goodreads, Facebook and my blog. At launch I’ll begin a book tour and offer some free copies in the promotion.

And after that... Well. Probably some intensive beach therapy and start all over again.

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed, marketing your books and providing useful information to other writers. What is your primary goal?

If you’d have asked me this question prior to October, I would have said that the purpose of the blog was to provide samples of my work and promote my books. It’s changed now.

In October I began interviewing authors and learned that talking to and about other people is far more interesting than the (slightly) solipsistic focus on me and my own work. I’ll definitely continue to use the blog to provide updates and announcements - even a few more strange little stories, but the focus has definitely shifted to engaging more with the writing community.

The author interviews will continue, becoming weekly from January 2013. There’s a lot of interest at the moment so I hope I can get the interviews to be bi-weekly as soon as possible. I’m also starting to interview non-fiction authors as well as others from the broader publishing industry.

Ultimately, I plan to expand the blog to become something of a resource to writers, including techniques, services, software etc.

We have had several authors from Australia on the Spotlight. What kind of unique selling and marketing situations does that create? Where is your biggest reading audience, in the US or down under? Does marketing online help in this situation?

I’ve focused all my efforts so far on online - so I don’t consider myself as a writer to be part of a specific region. At the moment my biggest audience is in the US, followed by the UK, then Australia. I’d love to have a stronger local presence, and plan to attend some more of the great Melbourne writers’ festivals next year. Like most things, it’s about persistence and presence.

Besides writing, what other tasks to you do yourself to bring your writing to market? Do you outsource anything?

Like so many writers, I love what I do, which is telling stories. Beyond that, it becomes a struggle to find the time to market the books. I outsource my editing and cover art. I’d love to be able to work with a publicist or agent of some kind, and am hoping to team up with the right person some time soon.

You started in film and television and then became an Author. Is one of your goals to go full circle and see your novels on the big screen?

Yes, that would be exceptional. I’d love for one of the novels to be picked up by an interesting production company or director. Undreamed actually began life as a screenplay. Films are not books, and it’s natural that in the process of converting a manuscript to a screenplay, changes are needed, but the right hands, film can express the characters’ journeys in ways that novels cannot.

Author's Book List
Undreamed
Undreamed is a dark psychological thriller that tells the tale of Alice, a woman trapped between reality and a dream.

Alice is trapped in a nightmare. She leads two lives, both real to her, both flawless in their logic and texture, both filled with people that she loves and hates. One of these is a dream. She has no way of knowing which. A borderline junkie-heiress in Manhattan, or a recovering psych patient in Sydney, when Alice sleeps in one life, she wakes into the other.

Other than her own memory of them, her worlds are separate and seamless. In both her lives she tries to find clues to discover the root of her sickness, but nothing crosses over. She may as well be two completely different people. Caught in this impossible status quo, never able to bring herself to believe that the life she’s leading is true, Alice is trapped. Not believing either, she believes nothing. Then one day, her lives are fractured when something does cross over. First in Sydney then Manhattan, Alice meets a girl dressed in green. She knows this girl for what she is: the key to her escape. But as she unravels the girl’s secret, the realities of not one but both lives are challenged.

The question becomes: who is it that she’s really waking?

Jan and the Spooky Periscope Incident
The Chronicles of Jan
The first two installments of short stories in the Jan Series. Scifi / Comedy.

#1 Jan and the Spooky Periscope Incident. Jan gets all cross-dimensional when she invents a reality trans-locator. Things don't quite pan out as expected as she has to deal with machines with the energy output of the sun, nasal black holes, an evil robot named Lucky and a tribe of periscopes.

#2 Jan and the Mysterious Dishwasher Thing. In the second short, Jan discovers a very, very mysterious thing inside her dishwasher. But that's not the whole story, not by a long shot. It's a tale that involves a bunch of exotic particles, cascading dimensions, a gun that shoots mermaids, an Angelic Choir of one, more periscopes and yes, really a really big explosion.

Jan and The Spooky Periscope Incident is packed with weirdness, explosions, periscopes and shameless abuse of scientific terminology.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

First things first. Do you have another book on the horizon? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease.

Yes, I’m very excited to have three books in the revision stage. One is a coming of age story about an immigrant teen growing up in the U.S. Another is historical fiction, set in the East Asian country of Laos, in 1969. And the one that may be ready next to release features an ensemble cast of characters, mostly women and the housemaids they employ, who are living in the Middle East.

Novel writing is tricky busy; revising is essential so I’ll leave you in a bit of suspense to see which one will be first out.

How does your cover development process work? Do you hand over the basic theme to anyone or do you follow more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

I have a few designers who I love to work with because their aesthetic is not stereotypical pulp fiction. They go for sensibility and more of an artistic framework which I feel reflects my content which is almost always dealing with culture, no matter which of my books I’m working on. I send the designer a brief, and sample chapters; he then comes back with mood board, suggested images, and typography for the title/author name.

I have done reader votes on covers in the past and they’ve been really helpful to figure out what is working in a cover and what could use refining.

What kinds of support groups do you belong too? Do they help with writing, marketing and the publishing process?

I am part of both the Independent Author Network and the World Literary Cafe as well as many other groups for writers –particularly indie ones – because there is a great strength in numbers. You not only have a wider network to showcase your own work, but you learn from the work of others.

Have you ever done an Internet book tour? If so, tell us some of the experiences you had.

Blog tours are essential when you are starting out to get word out about your book; they are also an excellent way to get reviews (which are impossible to squeeze out from the most avid reader, simply because there are so many good books out there).

I’ve done everything from review only tours to excerpt sharing (where people post your cover and an interview or snippet from the novel) and these help get your work in front of new readers.

How rewarding was it to work with the young authors in the Qatari Voices? Do you plan any other multi-author books?

I’ve done a lot of co-editing in the Qatar Narratives series which was a set of locally produced books, selections of which appear in Qatari Voices. I have co-edited four or so titles and if you can find the right creative partner, it can be a rewarding experience.

I love working with aspiring or new authors. The magic of writing comes back when you see how delighted someone is in a finished piece that touches the hearts of others– and also the excitement of having your work read for the first time.

Hopefully we have one more title planned in the QN series for the spring called Letters from Qatar.

We have had several authors highlighted on the Author’s Spotlight from outside the US. Where is your biggest audience? How is your audience abroad? Do you publish your books in other languages?

If you look at the statistics based on who is opening my newsletter, my audience is very wide spread between the U.S., Qatar, and also the UK. In terms of who is buying the books, since I’m presently mainly a Kindle author, the majority of rights and permissions are for U.S. based customers.

Qatari Voices has been translated into Arabic and I hope it’s the first of many.

Being an indie publisher, what was your biggest task in bringing your book to market? Do you outsource much of the process?

Editing is always the challenge. And yes, I always work with an external editor. Often I have two people I work with, a cultural advisor or someone who knows more about the people/place/customs that I’m writing about than I do and can give me a fresh perspective, as well as a content/copy editor.

Being self-published means you have more control over your content but it doesn’t mean you can skip any steps of the process that commercial publishers use like editing, design, or marketing because for the user, the reader, the end product has to be of the same quality.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in other types of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

Free days on Amazon through the KDP program have been wonderful for me both because of the high rankings and therefore visibilty you gain. If you do a blog tour with a giveway, like a Kindle Fire, that also can get you many followers on various social media links. The challenge is always how to keep the momentum going after the giveway or free period ends. One simple way is through monthly newsletters where you update readers on what you’re up to. Since I have 6 eBooks, I try to rotate to have at least one freebie a month. You’d be amazed how little people remember about your work (even family) but they love those free days!

Hip Hop Dance
The American Dance Floor
Rapping. Breakdancing. MCing. DJing. Beatboxing. Graffiti art. These are just some of the most well-known artistic expressions spawned from hip hop culture, which has grown from being an isolated inner-city subculture in the 1970s to being a truly international and mainstream culture that has taken root in countries as diverse as Japan, France, Israel, Poland, Brazil, South Korea, and England.

Stemming from its humble origin as a lifestyle of minority youth in New York City, hip hop dance is now a global phenomenon that has transcended ethnicity, nationality, and language. Today's hip hop culture is so popular and pervasive, the U.S. Department of State describes hip hop as "now the center of a megamusic and fashion industry around the world."

This insightful book provides not only an overview of hip hop's distinctive dance style and steps, but also a historic overview of hip hop's roots as an urban expression of being left out of the mainstream pop culture, clarifying the social context of hip hop culture before it became a widespread suburban phenomenon. Hip Hop Dance documents all the forms of street music that led to one of the most groundbreaking, expressive, and influential dance styles ever created.

Mommy but Still Me
Imagine a man volunteering to trade in his game nights for heart burn and back ache. Good thing there are women around to ensure the survival of the species. This hilarious look at the journey from high heels to high blood pressure, as a jet setter turns into a bed wetter, is what your doctor won't tell you and your own mother may have forgotten in the years since she was blessed by your arrival.

At our first meeting my future father-in-law waited until we sat down in the Thai restaurant, the oblong menus placed in our hands and the waiter was a distance away, tending to other diners, before turning towards me, his eyes glowing. This was the first time we were all seeing each other after his son had proposed to me. "When will I get to hold my first grandchild?"

For my father-in-law and everyone else, I have a question of my own: When will any of you be satisfied?

So You Want to Sell a Million Copies?

In easy to do, daily steps and exercises, Mohana breaks down the steps of getting started as a creative writer. From getting past writer's block (excuse of the weak!) to putting that blog to work (every body's got one), the tools of the trade are revealed.

If you've had a story idea in your head for a day, year, (or longer) that it doesn't seem to be writing itself, you may want to take a closer look at this book. Designed as a concise guide for aspiring writers, you'll find here the key principles of how to get started, keep going, and finish a manuscript, all told by a fellow accidental writer who took the long way developing a writer's formula.

Coloured and Other Stories
What's it like being the ant in the ice cream? The characters in this short story collection will show you; experience life as they know it as transplants from across the world into American suburbia.

Adapted from real life anecdotes both her own and those of others, Mohana takes us into the world of the South Asian immigrant living the American Dream. Think of her as a cultural translator for those who you may not notice otherwise, living in the margins of our cities.

"What are a few inches when you know he will provide for you the rest of your life," her mother would have said, smacking her in the cheek.

The sight of his feet, white, broad toes, and clean, short-clipped nails startled her. Americans normally wore their shoes everywhere; they had special shoes to wear inside their houses, shoes specifically for their bedrooms. BABY

Haram in the Harem
Postcolonial Studies
Haram in the Harem focuses on the differences in nationalist discourse regarding women and the way female writers conceptualized the experience of women in three contexts: the middle-class Muslim reform movement, the Algerian Revolution, and the Partition of India. During each of these periods the subject of women, their behavior, bodies, and dress were discussed by male scholars, politicians, and revolutionaries.

The resonating theme amongst these disparate events is that women were believed to be best protected when they were ensconced within their homes and governed by their families, particularly male authority, whether they were fathers, brothers, or husbands. The threat to national identity was often linked to the preservation of womanly purity.

Yet for the writers of this study, Ismat Chughtai (19151991), Assia Djebar (1936), and Khadija Mastur (19271982), the danger to women was not in the public sphere but embedded within a domestic hierarchy enforced by male privilege. In their fictional texts, each writer shows how women resist, subvert, and challenge the normative behaviors prescribed in masculine discourse.

In their writings they highlight the different ways women negotiated private spaces between intersecting masculine hegemonies of power including colonialism and native patriarchy. They demonstrate distinct literary viewpoints of nation, home, and womens experiences at particular historical moments. The choice of these various texts reveals how fiction provided a safe space for female writers to contest traditional systems of power. Bringing into focus the voices and experiences of womenwho existed as limited cultural icons in the nationalist discourseis a common theme throughout the selected stories. This book showcases the fluidity of literature as a response to the intersections of gender, race, and nation.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

I understand you’re working on the first of a series called: The Single Daddy Club. Can you tell us when we can expect this to be in our hands and give us a little teaser?

I am happy to report that the entire series is available for Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and iBooks. I considered putting the books out a couple of months apart, but I'm just not that patient. The series is light and fluffy fun! Three single fathers vow to support one another as they raise the children in their lives. None of them are looking for love, but love finds them nonetheless. The third book has a touch of suspense in it which is unusual for me.

You have made the move from traditional publishing to the indie world. Now hard was it making the adjustment? Do you still do the traditional types of marketing like book signings, personal appearances, etc. What is the biggest thing you miss from the relationship with your publisher?

The most difficult adjustment I have found is not having enough time to do all the the necessary jobs involved in being an Indie Author. I spend about half of each day on marketing and promotion. I promote myself and other authors. (I have a blog called Awesome Romance Novels where I feature 2 or more books per day.) With the publication of The Single Daddy Club Series, I have succeeded in uploading all of the backlist titles. I am looking forward to having the time to create some new works of fiction.

Although I used to speak at local high schools and libraries and participate in book signings, I no longer do those things. I probably should find the time to do them. I found talking to teens about the pros, cons, and rewards of being an author quite satisfying. I know I would be welcomed at schools, libraries, and book stores. That's something I'll have to revisit soon.

While writing romances for Harlequin, I did enjoy the fact that that's all I did. I was a writer. Period. Now I wear every hat and I'm in charge of all aspects of my career. Although it's exciting, it's also hectic and nonstop.

One of the big moves would have been getting out from under the tent of the publisher. You are in all the right places on-line. Did you have to make a big adjustment in adapting to social media? How did your reading audience adapt to all the changes you had to make including a name change?

The social media learning curve was steep. (I don't mind confessing that the learning curve of every avenue of self-publishing was steep.) But I do enjoy socializing, so the learning has been fun. I've made some amazing on-line friendships and connections.

One of the biggest surprises was when Donna Clayton (my pseudonym) readers began finding Donna Fasano on the internet. I have a blog, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account. Although I wrote for my publisher as Donna Clayton, the copyright of each of my books was listed as being held by me, Donna Fasano, in the front of each and every one of my traditionally published novels. I believed that helped a lot.

I have read several blogs you have written. Great stuff. Giving back to other authors is a great idea with all the experience you have. What goals do you have in mind as you share your information?

Offering other authors a helping hand makes me feel good. I'm a big advocate of helping others (and not just in a professional sense). Some authors like to hold onto their hard-earned lessons tightly, and I met some of those types of people back when I first began self-publishing; they know answers and secrets but refuse to tell. However, I met other authors who were generous with information and who helped me immensely. And now that I've learned how to do this successfully, I want to help others all I can. I'm a firm believer in 'what goes around, comes around'...if I help others to succeed, my own success will only be enhanced.

Have you created any book trailers for your works? Do you have any plans in the future to expand that part of your marketing?

I haven't ventured out into this area yet. However, it is something that interests me so I will probably give it a try.

We have had several of the Indie Chicks in the Author’s Spotlight. What a group of outstanding people. I feel so strongly about the group, I added their book in the list of your credits below (You are a co-author). What is the main thing that you get out of this association? Why is the book so successful besides having outstanding authors?

I am so lucky to a part this group of talented women. They offer support and a wealth of knowledge, and they're always willing to help in any way they can. I believe the book is successful because we wrote our stories from the heart. When emotion is poured into a story, readers can't help but notice.

What other groups do you belong too? Let’s give them credit here.

I'm a member of BackListEbooks.com; a large group of authors who were (some still are) traditionally published and now have published some of their backlist titles. I am also a 'member' of several other 'groups' of writers who share information and support, but who aren't organized enough to be deemed a group. Writing can be a solitary occupation; making contacts and forming networks of friends and supporters helps immensely.

You wrote about the difference between the traditional world and Indie world: the UPS were freedom, money, and developing new talents and the DOWNS were no deadlines, no boss and doing it all.

How much of a conflict in your everyday life was it changing hats? Did you have to change the process of how you brought a book to market? If you had to go through the change again, do you have any advice to other authors on where to start?

In a perfect world, I think I would have done things differently. I would have taken the time to build my social network and introduce myself to book reviewers and bloggers before publishing my first Indie book. I'd have 'done it right' by stirring up a little anticipation before launching that first book. But life is rarely perfect, and what I deem perfect circumstances would be far from it to another writer, I'm sure. But if asked for advice, I would tell authors who are just starting out to educate themselves. There is a wealth of free information on the internet. Find it, read it, apply it. What works for some authors might not work for others, so be willing to experiment, be willing to keep an open mind, be willing to fail, and be willing to try again.

How big an impact has ebooks been on your sales volume? Did you have to change your approach to the way you write and market the ebooks compared to the traditional method?

98% of my sales come from my ebooks. Up to this point, all the books (except one) that I've published have been backlist titles. But I've accomplished my 2012 goal of publishing all eleven of my backlist books, and now I'm ready to try my hand at writing more fiction. I have heard that ebook readers prefer shorter novels and that they enjoy very low-priced books. Are these 'rumors' true? I have no idea. All I know is that my readers enjoy being taken on romantic adventures; they've told me they like the realistic characters I create, so I think I'm going to stick with what works for me. For now.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in other types of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

People love getting something for nothing. I currently have a book running for free on Amazon and iTunes. It's called Return of the Runaway Bride, and I've given away thousands of copies at both venues. I believe it gives readers a 'taste' of my work. I think it's good business to offer samples, and I hope the readers who enjoy my work will be willing to come back and buy a second or third novel. I've given away paperback novels via Goodreads, and I've given away ebooks through book review blogs. I haven't run into any obstacles as of yet, and I think giveaways are a great way to introduce your work to a reader who might not have tried your books, otherwise.
