Author Description:
Sam Boush is a novelist and award-winning journalist.

He has worked as a wildland firefighter, journalist, and owner of a mid-sized marketing agency. Though he’s lived in France and Spain, his heart belongs to Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his wife, Tehra, two wonderful children, and a messy cat that keeps them from owning anything nice.

He is a member of the Center for Internet Security, International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, and Cloud Security Alliance.

ALL SYSTEMS DOWN is his first novel, with more to come.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I’m working on the sequel to All Systems Down.

Twitter is a great way to waste time. I certainly spend too much writing time engaging with other writers.

Covers: My publisher asked me about ideas, then took those thoughts and brought in some of the other editors to brainstorm.

Primary genre: To market to technothriller readers isn’t particularly easy…

Great blog: I do try to give other writers exposure on my blog. I really feel like all of us authors are in the same place, in an industry we’ve joined for love not money.

Readers write all my reviews. I believe authors who write a page-turning book will generally be rewarded with positive feedback.

Marketing experience: My marketing background (including my background in publishing more than a dozen years ago) is certainly helpful. Mostly, it gives me the confidence to ask. My advice to any new author is to be assertive and willing to write to bloggers or newspapers or fellow writers just to tell them your book exists.

Author Description:
"I spent my childhood writing journals about the boys I loved, especially the ones who never loved me back. I never imagined I'd be channeling those emotions into full-length novels later on in my life." - Amalie Jahn

Undeterred by fickle teenage boys, Amalie won her first literary award in seventh grade for a fictional short story about a girl struggling with accident-induced hearing loss. She's been writing ever since.

After briefly setting aside the creative writing of her youth to pursue a career in education, she found that creating lesson plans for her elementary school students cultivated a desire to write for young adults. However, it would be many years before her first full-length YA novel, The Clay Lion, written as a tribute to a pair of siblings who were close to her heart, would eventually be published.

The Clay Lion's Best-Selling March 2013 release was followed by the publication of Tin Men, the second in the time travel series, in July of 2014 and the final installment of the series entitled A Straw Man was published in July of 2015. Among the Shrouded (2013) was the first in a series of novels exploring real-world issues under the umbrella of paranormal suspense. Gather the Sentient (2016) and Beyond the Sanctified (2017) were the second and third books in the Sevens Prophecy Series.

Interview Excerpt

Next: The Next to Last Mistake is a YA contemporary releasing March 19, 2019 from Light Messages. It’s a story about Tess Goodwin, whose life in rural Iowa is sheltered and uncomplicated.

My social media relationships are extremely important to me and I built my following by simply putting myself out there and offering to help other people in any way I could. I think the biggest mistake authors make on social media is using it purely as a sales platform.

Covers: I began the process by interviewing several designers whose work I thought would be a good fit for the feel I wanted for the series. Once I selected the artist, she created several templates to start from and after selecting the one with the best theme, we worked together to create the perfect look.

Audio books: The conversion of The Clay Lion Series into audio is an interesting story. Quite by accident I began corresponding online with the amazing audiobook narrator Lorelei King. After chatting back and forth for several days, she took it upon herself to read The Clay Lion and approached me afterward about doing the narration for the book herself.

Bundling a series of novels: I have two trilogies – The Clay Lion Series and the Sevens Prophecy Series. The SPS is a more traditional ‘series’ in that book two picks up where book one left off and so forth. It’s basically one long story broken into three parts. TCLS is different in that The Clay Lion was originally written as a stand-alone novel but readers begged for more from the characters so I happily obliged.

Primary genre: I write mostly for a Young Adult audience but unlike adult readers, teens can be fairly tricky to find! Most teens don’t use Facebook and opt for other social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. I’ve found a great number of teen readers are also Bookstagrammers or Book Bloggers.

Free books: My books are often featured in multi-author giveaways. I think giveaways provide a great opportunity for readers to find new authors to enjoy without the risk of purchasing something they might not like.

Reader list: I do maintain a reader list and find a good number of my subscribers through giveaways or sites like BookFunnel or Instafreebie.

Author Description:
How many times have you heard or read a news report that made you think, "You just can't make this stuff up. What could they possibly have been thinking?" People often involve themselves in a chain of events that leads to unforeseen consequences simply because they want to take what they think is the easy way out or what they think is a short cut to wealth or fame. I'm fascinated by this tendency, and it's the jumping off place for my fiction.

I’m a Kirkus Reviews critically acclaimed crime fiction author. I’m currently working on a series of noir crime thrillers featuring a husband and wife team of con artists, the Travelers, who specialize in stealing from other criminals. The Traveling Man, The Computer Heist, and The Blackmail Photos are the first three novels of the series.

Interview Excerpt

Next: The next book, The Kidnap Victim. The Travelers: Book Five, will be released this spring. I hope before May.

Social media—Twitter, Facebook, whatever—does not sell books unless you advertise. That being said, social media does build your brand and make you more discoverable. I started on Twitter right after I joined Rave Reviews Book Club, so I had an instant group of twitter users to connect with. That helped a lot starting out. The longer I’ve been on Twitter, the more selective I’ve become about who I’ll follow or follow back.

Cover creation: Since my books are in a series, I made decisions about the overall format early on—police tapes across the middle, large central image related to the book title, background image related to the genre.

Primary genre: I only write dark crime thrillers and I’m continuing to work on the Travelers Series. At the macro level, I’m in KDP Select, so I only sell eBooks on Amazon, except for The Double Cross, which, because I give it away for a New Releases email list sign up, can’t be in KDP Select. I’m trying to find out if marketing to Kindle Unlimited subscribers is the best way to currently increase my reader numbers and overall visibility while I work on building up my email list.

Free books: I’ve added members to my New Releases email list, gotten new book reviews, generated interest in my series, and gained readers. My main goal in running free book promotions is to give readers the opportunity to find out if they like my books, and to thus increase my visibility overall.

My method for getting reviews has changed over time. When I first started out, I spent a lot of time trying to get the first ten reviews. I emailed review sites and top reviewers, begged on my blog—you get the picture. I also got a professional review from Kirkus Reviews to use as ad copy and as proof of quality. Now I just get the Kirkus review, launch the book, and email my New Releases list…

Author Description:
Matthew Peters is a writer living in North Carolina. He is the author of CONVERSATIONS AMONG RUINS, the award-winning thriller THE BROTHERS' KEEPERS: A NICHOLAS BRANSON NOVEL--BOOK 1, and the newly released KILLING JOHN THE BAPTIST: A NICHOLAS BRANSON NOVEL--BOOK 2. He is a member of the International Thriller Writers. You can learn more about Matthew and his books by visiting his website(see contact information).

Interview Excerpt

Next: Word travels fast through the grapevine! Yes, the third Nicholas Branson novel is in the works and should be released in the Fall of 2018 by Melange Books. Of course if I tell you too much about the next book, I’ll have to kill you.

Time management is crucial when it comes to meeting my professional obligations. I spend several months researching a novel and then several more months writing it. I write in the early mornings and research in the afternoons. When it comes to my loved ones, I try to treat writing like any other job, and not do it on weekends if I can help it, though of course there are exceptions.

My primary genre is Thriller. My best marketing approach to this group has been through Bookbub. I had a very successful campaign in October for the first book in the series, THE BROTHERS’ KEEPERS. In the near future I will be using BookSends and Book Gorilla as well.

Reader list: I have a newsletter, which will go out soon in the New Year, and I’m active on Facebook and Twitter. I love hearing from my readers, be it through book reviews or personal correspondence. I make it a point to respond to each inquiry, because I firmly believe that it’s all about the readers.

Great blog: The primary goal of my blog is to provide readers with interesting and useful content, be they writers or not. I’m also very interested in increasing awareness of dual diagnosis…

Getting reviews: You know, when I first started out, it was really hard to get anyone to read/review my books. As a writer friend of mine is fond of saying, it’s a little like trying to hand someone a snake. I think as you go along, though, you make friends who are writers and readers and you slowly grow an audience.

Post with Profile + Interview: HBS Author's Spotlight

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Richard is the author of six novels, two novellas, and a collection of short stories with much more on the way. His short work has appeared in a diverse range of publications from Dark Moon Digest to The Backbone Mountain Review. His most recent work includes Legion of the Damned, book 3 in his post apocalyptic coming of age series, The Dreadland Chronicles.

Unlike other writers who knew they wanted to write the moment they became self aware, Richard’s path to taking up the pen followed a more leisurely route.

As a child he wanted to be a fighter pilot, later he thought it would be neat to be a rock star. Unfortunately, as an introvert, he was not suited for the stage. Once he gave up the guitar, much to the relief of his parents, he turned his attention to making movies.

Armed with an 8mm movie camera, several rolls of aluminum foil liberated from the kitchen, and the spare bed sheets, he filmed his first masterpiece. The story was about a space ship crash landing in the woods behind his house. His sister starred as the damsel in distress while his little brother, wrapped like a mummy in the spare bed sheets, chased her through the woods.

His career as a famous director ended before it even got off the ground when on opening night his mother recognized the missing bed sheets and aluminum foil resulting in his grounding for the remainder of that summer.

A voracious reader, he believes writing is the most intimate form of communication possible. The reader permits the writer access to their mind, and the readers reality dissolves as they focus on the narrative of the tale being spun.

His love of the macabre was sparked at an early age when he would sit on his grandmother’s porch listening to her tell ghost stories. During the summer he and his cousins would sleep in his grandmother’s back yard, within sight of the abandoned haunted house next door, and spend the night scaring one another with gruesome tales of shadowy creatures that went bump in the night.

During his life he has played a series of roles, husband, father, son, and lover, but his favorite by far is grandfather. He and his wife of twenty plus years have raised four children, and helped raise eight grandchildren. They provide a secure home to a yellow lab named Max and a cat who will answer to either Flame or Furball. His loving wife, Dena has experienced first hand the exasperation of living with a writer whose mind has a tendency to wander at the most inappropriate times. Yet she manages to keep his feet firmly planted on terra firma.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I’m currently polishing a paranormal mystery titled FIDDLERS POND, that comes in at 95,000 words. It takes a look at the small town of Porter Mines that lives under the curse of a witch that was burned at the stake in the late seventeen hundreds…

Personal appearances: My local independent bookstore has been good to me when it comes to signings, graciously hosting me for a signing when I have a new print release.

Short stories: I’ve always been more of a long tale writer, short stories are difficult for me but every so often I create a good one. It’s one of the reason I’ve challenged myself with this alphabet series, to teach myself to write in the short form.

Primary genre: Speculative fiction, low dark fantasy, though I am spreading my writers wings with a little project that will have to remain under wraps for the time being.

Idea of your starter library where you sent FREE BOOKS to a reader for email address and a subscription: I’ve done guest posts, promos on Goodreads, blog announcements, excerpts, anything I can think of to get my work in front of the people that matter, the readers. Right now I’m focused on Amazon Ads, working on building the keyword lists that will hopefully extend my currently restricted reach.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I'm presently working on a murder-mystery set in a vineyard in South Australia. I don't have a timeline for its release yet. I'm taking it slow.

Social media: I began with Facebook simply as a platform to connect with friends without any idea how social media works. Then, about a year before my first book was launched, I set up a Twitter account… One day, however, by chance, I got everyone's attention when I tweeted a writing quote that I had created. I still remember the tweet: "Writers and artists are magicians. They have a real magic wand to conjure up images in the mind's eye." It went viral.

Covers: If you read any of my thriller novels, you'll find the scenes are vivid or what has been described by readers and reviewers as "movie-like." So the visuals make it easy for any designer to understand the theme. All my book covers were created by different publishers.

Short stories: I have a lot of short stories scattered in my mind, and it's actually one of my styles. I decided to publish some of them based on my mood at that moment in time.

Crime Writers Association and the International Thriller Writers org… have primarily helped me with marketing. I have my own editors and Beta readers so I don't rely on them for such purposes although I know they do assist if you need extra help. These support groups offer different platforms that increase book awareness from interviews, guest blogging to social media promotion as well as giveaways.

Primary genre: I write thrillers. I do some advertising on book promotion sites but I'm also a member of several hundred book groups on Facebook. I also do giveaways, run contests - whatever it takes. I'm also a frequent blogger. I do lots of guest blogging and write for my own blog.

Free books: Depending on the platform you use, book giveaways are great. It certainly helps in creating awareness about your book. It has resulted in some sales. I use a variety of promotional sites to run a campaign. Each giveaway platform produces a different result for you.

Reader list: I'm here, there - everywhere. I issue an e-newsletter twice a month and it helps me get new subscribers that way. If a subscriber likes your book they'll forward your email to their friends and it goes on and on.

Living in Singapore: Would you believe it that most of my readers are from the United States, followed by the United Kingdom? I know this from the demographics of book sale reports. And they've all come to learn about me from social media and book promotion sites.

Author Description:
Linda Watkins currently resides in Sedona, Arizona and, in another life, was a Senior Clinical Financial Analyst at Stanford University School of Medicine. Born on the east coast, she grew up in a suburb of Detroit. Upon graduation from college (Carnegie Mellon, '70), she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where she lived and worked for most of her adult life. In 2006, she packed her belongings and, along with her 3 rescue dogs, took the plunge and moved to a remote island off the coast of Maine. It was there that she wrote her first novel, Mateguas Island and, since publication, the novel has garnered the following awards:

* 2014 Gold Medal, Supernatural Fiction, Readers Favorite International Book Award Competition
* 2014 First Place Award, Contemporary Gothic, Chanticleer Book Review, Paranormal Awards
* 2015 Outstanding Novel in Horror/Suspense, IAN Book of the Year Awards

Return to Mateguas Island, the sequel, was also awarded a 1st Place in Contemporary Gothic Fiction in the 2015 Chanticleer Book Review’s Paranormal Awards, was named 2015 Finalist in Horror by Readers Favorite International Book Award Competition, and named 2016 Finalist in Horror by the IAN Book of the Year Awards.

The third novel in the Mateguas Island Series, Ghosts of Mateguas, was published in early 2016. In 2017, Ghosts was named "Finalist in Thrillers" in the Book Excellence Awards and "Finalist in Horror/Suspense" in the IAN Book of the Year Awards.

Today, Linda has completed a new stand-alone novel, Summer Girl, a work of literary fiction, which was published in November of 2017. She also completed a novella, Sarah & Zoey, which was published in September of 2017.

Today, she is working on a new series of gothic fiction, The Storm Island Mysteries. The first installment in this series, Storm Island: A Kate Pomeroy Mystery, is complete and she hopes to publish it in late 2018. She is also working on a prequel to the first Storm Island Mystery. After that, the next item on her agenda will be to write the 4th installment in The Mateguas Island Series.

Serious about dog welfare and rescue, all net proceeds from sales of The Mateguas Island Series are donated to Linda's charitable trust, The Raison d'Etre Fund for Dogs, Dedicated to Rescue and Research.

Linda is a member of the Horror Writers Association, The Great Lakes Association of Horror Writers, The International Association of Crime Writers (N.A.), and the Authors Guild.

To take a look at her other works or communicate with her, please visit her website (www.lindawatkins-author.com), her blog where she posts book reviews and other features (www.lindawatkins.biz) and/or her novel website, dedicated to the Mateguas Island Series (www.mateguasisland.com).

Interview Excerpt

Next: Storm Island: A Kate Pomeroy Mystery… The book is a contemporary gothic mystery set on an island off the coast of Maine. I anticipate that it will be published in the Fall of 2018.

Good following on twitter: As an Indy author, social media is very important. In the beginning, I believe my postings on FB and Twitter were probably responsible for most of my sales. Today, however, for the established books, I don’t think that’s the case.

Support groups: I’ve been most involved with the Horror Writers’ Association. In 2015, I joined a group of writers to represent HWA at the Tucson Festival of Books.

My primary genre is contemporary gothic. The Mateguas books are all American Gothic Fiction. Storm Island is a gothic mystery. The book I’m working on now is also gothic. I market these through the Horror Writers Association and other horror groups.

Reviews: Before I publish a book, I solicit editorial reviews, usually from Midwest Book Review and Readers Favorite, among others. I want these ‘in the can’ so I can use quotes on the cover and have them to post when the book goes live. Customer reviews are a different animal and are harder to come by.

Featured Book: Las Vegas Girl

A GRIPPING, SUSPENSEFUL CRIME NOVEL

Detectives Laura Baxter and Jack Holt are members of the elite: Las Vegas Metro PD, one of the toughest and most respected law enforcement agencies in the United States. In the middle of a city with two million residents and 43 million annual visitors, they’re hunting for a killer.

The crime: audacious

In a glamorous Las Vegas hotel, in front of hundreds of witnesses and under the lenses of countless video surveillance cameras, a young girl is brutally murdered. What promises to be a quick and easy investigation soon becomes a nightmare. The most recorded crime in Vegas is missing one key protagonist, the killer.

The forensics: stupefying

A crime-scene fingerprint unleashes dozens of unsettling questions instead of providing answers. Was this a murder for hire? In the politically-charged case, the scenario seems plausible; the victim’s secret life could’ve been the obstacle in an ambitious politician’s path. As the investigation unspools the well-concealed secrets surrounding the girl’s life, Baxter and Holt attract the attention of someone desperate to keep history’s terrible secrets buried.

The truth: shocking

A testimony from beyond the grave turns into a death warrant for the two unrelenting detectives. While they expose a connection with the victim’s distant past that could hold the key to catching her killer, they must learn to rely on each other to survive.

Two mavericks make an intriguing team. Baxter and Holt trust each other with their lives, only not with their darkest secrets.

Life is an extravaganza! figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had met in San Diego and married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University. A GED for my husband and many more years of education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. I'm still married to the same sweet guy and live with him in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing fiction, I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese kitties.

An award-winning and bestselling author I enjoy snooping into life's mysteries with fun, fiction, & food—California style! My books include the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series set in the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs, the Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery series set on California’s Central Coast, and The Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery series set in Orange County, California--the OC. Author Description:
Writing has been a desire my whole life. Once I found the courage to write, life changed for me in the most profound way. Bringing stories to readers that I'd enjoy reading and creating characters that are flawed, but lovable is such a joy.

When not writing, I'm with my family doing something fun. My husband, Gene, and I are bikers and enjoy riding to new locations, meeting new people and generally enjoying this fabulous country we live in.

I come from a family of veterans. My grandfather, father, brother, two sons, and one daughter-in-law are all veterans. Needless to say, I am proud to be an American and proud of the service my amazing family has given. In trying to give back, I've started a foundation, Authors4Veterans, with my friend and fellow author, Stacey Joy Netzel. Our charities will rotate but will always support our military and their families.

Coming soon: The Misadventures of Betsy Stark also set here in the Coachella Valley.
