SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author
Congratulations on your book: Bad Mommy. What do you have on the drawing board next? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?
Thank you! My next book is a romance. It's called Atheists Who Kneel and Pray. I alternate between psychological suspense and romance when I write and I don't know what's more depressing: human psychology or love.
Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?
This year I have some really fun events planned. I have a retreat in Port Townsend, Washington in June at a winery called Marrowstone Vineyard. In April I'll be singing at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado for the Love N' Books event. And in September I'm hosting a writer's retreat in Seattle for aspiring authors where they will be able to take workshops with some of their favorite authors. You have written several novellas. Can you tell us if they had an impact on the sales of your novels? Are shorty’s one of your styles of writing or are they created to give readers a sample of your work? Do you feel short reads are a product of our email and smart phone age?
Any type of publishing has a positive impact on your books. It broadens your audience and gives variety.
Between your book writing, blogging, marketing, family and all the other things that can get in your way, how do you manage your time? Do you have a set schedule or do you sort of play it by ear?
Since I have young children my days tend to be unpredictable and busy. I mostly work while they're at school
You have published several of your books in other languages. How is your audience abroad? Does marketing online help in this situation?
Internationally published books are acquired by publishers from those countries. The marketing for those books is handled by the publishers and I have little to do with the process. However marketing yourself through social media and developing a strong platform is important for your career and should be handled with attention and care.
What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?
I've never asked for reviews not even in the early days when I was new to the business. It happened organically. If readers feel strongly about something they want to discuss it and that's where Amazon comes in. It gives authors and readers a voice. They key is to write the type of book that gets people talking and thinking. They'll find you whether it's through Amazon, or Facebook, or your website.
You have written a novella series (Never Never) with Colleen Hoover. How did that process work out? Was there any problems in coordination, editing, cover design, etc. and how did you overcome them?
Colleen and I work really well together. I think the priority was our friendship and we always put that first in making decisions. Because there was mutual respect everything was done with humility and consideration. I don't recall us ever disagreeing which is a rare thing among two artists.
