HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of August 2016

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.

Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our August 2016 crew.

Author Description:
Lesley started writing almost as soon as she could read, and filled many Woolworth's exercise books with pony stories until she was old enough to go out with boys. Since she's been grown up, following a varied career as a model, air stewardess and disc jockey, she's written short fiction and features for a variety of magazines, achieved an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Wales, taught writing for both Kent Adult Education and the WEA and edited the first Sexy Shorts collection of short stories from Accent Press in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign. The Libby Sarjeant series is published by Accent Press, who also publish her book, How to Write a Pantomime, with a foreword by Roy Hudd. Lesley is a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association, the Society of Authors and the Crime Writers' Association.

Lesley's pantomimes are published by Jasper Publishing.

Interview Excerpt

Next: The next book to come out will be Murder On The Run, the 17th in the Libby Sarjeant series.

Social media: My publisher put me on Facebook and Twitter in the early days of both. I didn’t use Facebook very much at first, but Twitter was excellent. I made friends and readers, and even got bookings for talks and signings. My income stream went up as the ebook revolution gained pace, but that has levelled out now, and I find Twitter no longer so useful. It seems full of people posting “Buy My Book”, and I don’t like it!

Book signings: I no longer do signings, along with most of my author friends. We got very fed up with sitting in bookshops and being asked the way to the Ladies’ Room, or the cookery section! I do the occasional talk, few fewer now than I used to…

Audio books: In the early days I knew more about the audio and large print books than I do now. I get messages from people who like them, especially if a current book hasn’t yet been converted to audio, when they demand that it will be.

Writer support groups: Romantic Novelists' Association, The Crime Writers’ Association and the Society of Author.

I live and work in the UK and always have done. I’m English to the core, and have absolutely no idea if this creates a unique situation – it is the situation I’m used to. I do look with envy on my fellow cosy authors in the US, as they seem to have a far bigger following than we do here.

Post with Profile + Interview: HBS Author's Spotlight

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:

Uvi Poznansky is a bestselling, award-winning author, poet and artist. “I paint with my pen,” she says, “and write with my paintbrush.” Her romance boxed set, A Touch of Passion, is the 2016 WINNER of The Romance Reviews Readers' Choice Awards.

Education and work:
Uvi earned her B. A. in Architecture and Town Planning from the Technion in Haifa, Israel and practiced with an innovative Architectural firm, taking a major part in the large-scale project, called Home for the Soldier.

Having moved to Troy, N.Y. with her husband and two children, Uvi received a Fellowship grant and a Teaching Assistantship from the Architecture department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. There, she guided teams in a variety of design projects and earned her M.A. in Architecture. Then, taking a sharp turn in her education, she earned her M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.

She worked first as an architect, and later as a software engineer, software team leader, software manager and a software consultant (with an emphasis on user interface for medical instruments devices.) All the while, she wrote and painted constantly, and exhibited in Israel and California. In addition, she taught art appreciation classes. Her versatile body of work includes bronze and ceramic sculptures, oil and watercolor paintings, charcoal, pen and pencil drawings, and mixed media.

Books and Genres:
Her two series won great acclaim. Still Life with Memories is a family saga series with touches of romance. It includes Apart From Love, My Own Voice, The White Piano, The Music of Us, and Dancing with Air. The David Chronicles is a historical fiction series. It includes Rise to Power, A Peek at Bathsheba, and The Edge of Revolt.

Her poetry book, Home, is in tribute to her father. Her collection of dark tales, Twisted, and her Historical Fiction book, A Favorite Son, are both new age, biblically inspired books. In addition, Uvi wrote and illustrated two children books, Jess and Wiggle and Now I Am Paper. For each one of these books, she created an animation video (find them on YouTube and on her Goodreads page.)

Interview Excerpt

Next: a new boxed set, titled Love in Times of War. I looked at hundreds of romance novels and scores of authors to come up with this unique, wonderful selection. It will include twelve romance stories (a mix of novels and novellas) written by the best and the brightest authors in the genre: Tamara Ferguson, Jacquie Biggar, D.G. Torrens, Angelica Kate, Traci Hall, Jennifer St. Giles, Regina Puckett, Suzanne Jenkins, S.R. Mallery, Susan Jean Ricci, Bridgitte Lesley, and me.

Social media: Thank you for noticing my 24K followers on Twitter. The best way to gain followers is a simple one. Surprise yourself! Every day I publish a blog post about a different topic. Then I share it on social media, and readers come flocking.

My covers are always based on my own art, in all its forms (oil paintings, watercolors, or digital imagery) and they express the same vision as my writing. My art and my writing are two sides of the same coin. I write with a paintbrush and paint with a pen.

Audio books: Tales around a fire. That’s how it started… the oral tradition, the first way knowledge was stored and transmitted. Thousands of years later, we’ve rediscovered the power and presence of the human voice in the telling of new tales. Digital technology has made the recording and delivery of high-quality audio narration both convenient and affordable. Now storytellers everywhere are lifting their words from the page (or pixel) and breathing new life into their tales through audio fiction podcasts and audiobooks.

Novellas: The length of a story is never determined by marketing considerations. Rather, it is determined by what the character wants to reveal and the arc of change he or she is undergoing. It takes just the right amount of words to express an idea, no more, no less, and a writer better not skim the story or dilute it.

A Touch of Passion: 2016 WINNER of The Romance Reviews Readers' Choice Awards.

Apart from Love is my first published work, so it had no affect on any other books, because at that point there were no other books in my backlist. But your question is a valid one, in this respect: readers are always looking for authors who offer a large repertoire of stories. With each new book, there is a chance that your previous books will be discovered by new readers who have embraced your characters. This is especially true about books in series.

Blogging and time: That’s a question I ask myself a lot, where in the world do I find the time… Striking the right balance between writing and promoting is not an easy feat, ask any writer. For me, promoting is writing, because my blog is at the heart of reaching out to readers.

Author Description:
Maria Grazia Swan was born in Italy, but this rolling stone has definitely gathered no moss. She lived in Belgium, France, Germany, in beautiful Orange County, California where she raised her family, and is currently at home in Phoenix, Arizona--but stay tuned for weekly updates of Where in the World is Maria Grazia Swan?

As a young girl, her vivid imagination predestined her to be a writer. She won her first literary award at the age of fourteen while living in Belgium. As a young woman Maria returned to Italy to design for--ooh-la-la--haute couture. Once in the U.S. and after years of concentrating on family, she tackled real estate. These days her time is devoted to her deepest passions: writing and helping people find happiness.

Maria loves travel, opera, good books, hiking, and intelligent movies (if she can find one, that is). When asked about her idea of a perfect evening, she favors stimulating conversation, Northern Italian food and perfectly chilled Prosecco--but then, who doesn't?

Maria has written short stories for anthologies, articles for high profile magazines and numerous blogs tackling love and life. She engaged her editorial and non-fiction skills for Mating Dance: Rituals for Singles Who Weren't Born Yesterday. Her romantic suspense novels Love Thy Sister and Bosom Bodies are available at Amazon.com.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I am relaunching my Lella's series. Waiting for new covers and we will have new titles also. The series so far has 3 books, #1 is Gemini Moon, #2 is Venetian Moon, and #3 is Desert Moon.

Social media: Oh, how I wish that was the case. I'm a social media virgin. No joke. My twitter account grows only because I tend to retweet things I find cute or sweet or interesting. I'm not sure how it works but it does. Some days I open my email to find that I have 10 new followers..again, I'm thankful.

Covers: Ah, the covers...it only took me four years, but I finally 'got it'. Up to a short time ago I would decide on the covers according to my moods. After listening to top selling authors who care about my work, repeating over and over that I need new covers, covers that carry the theme like you so well put it, I decided it was time to listen to the experts.

Time management: Life dictates my schedule. I work as a Real Estate agent so some months I'm busy, other I'm not. And I got sort of stuck with this ferret, she's way past her shelf life, but I've grown attached to the little fuzz ball to the point that i get up before 7 AM to walk her during the Summer.

Free books: Obstacles? No, not really. The only thing I find...infuriating is when people don't even read the book, instead they turn around and sell it. I had to buy one of my own out of print paperbacks from a dealer and guess what? It was signed by the author. That would be me…

Reader list: I have a newsletter I send out four or five times a year, it's brief and brings gifts. Seriously, free books from myself and other authors, Starbucks gift cards for the first one who opens the newsletter..that sort of things. And then there is my author's page on Facebook. I also have blog subscribers and my wonderful Arcs readers, they read my books before release day.

My blog is about a lot of things, but it's not about writing. I belong to many author's groups and that's a great comfort especially when you're new. I have hired help for anything technical, so while I write the blog, my web maven takes care of posting it and keeping my website running smooth. I do my own tweeting and Facebook posting. As for my goal? To know that my books and characters are loved and that in some small way, they help some unknown person to make it through another day.

Author Description:
"ONE DOESN'T SIMPLY READ A TARDIF STORY, ONE EXPERIENCES IT!"

I'm an international bestselling Canadian author who loves to say, "I kill people off for a living!" You can imagine the looks I get from people. Sometimes I'll tell them, "Fictitiously, of course. I'm an author." Sometimes I won't say anything; I'll let them wonder...

Submerged, my latest novel, is a psychological suspense thriller with a hint of supernatural, and it promises to leave you breathless. But I am probably best known for Children of the Fog, a supernatural suspense thriller that has sold over 60,000 copies and made Amazon's Top 100 bestsellers list (#4 in overall list) multiple times out of nearly 2 million ebooks; and Whale Song, a much-loved, inspiring family tale with a hint of mystery, which is now available in its third edition--plus a school edition with a discussion guide.

Whale Song, an emotional mystery that explores controversial issues like assisted suicide, school bullies and racism, has captured the attention of numerous film companies. A screenplay, which I wrote with co-writer Alison Neuman, was completed in 2006, along with a movie treatment. I'm pursuing possible film deals for many of my books. And sometimes when I think of a movie deal, I smell buttered popcorn.

Booklist calls me "a big hit in Canada...a name to reckon with south of the border."

In September 2005, my gripping action-packed techno-thriller The River was released. This well-researched novel explores the mysterious Nahanni River area, nanotechnology and man's obsession with longevity. The River has been compared to works by Michael Crichton, James Patterson, Dean Koontz and Dan Brown.

I'm also the author of the 2004 "sizzling psychic suspense" Divine Intervention, a 'psi-fi' suspense thriller (or paranormal romance) that has been compared to works by authors such as Iris Johansen, Kay Hooper and Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb's 'In Death' series. Divine Justice, the second in the Divine mystery series, was also released in 2011.

In 2009, I branched off into romance with my debut romantic suspense Lancelot's Lady. Since romance is a different genre from my usual suspense/thrillers and YA, I wrote Lancelot's Lady under the pen name of Cherish D'Angelo. Lancelot's Lady was a semi-finalist in the Dorchester Publishing Next Best Celler contest hosted by Textnovel. It also won an Editor's Choice award from Textnovel in 2010.

A novelette of suspense titled Remote Control was released in ebook edition in July 2010; and a collection of stories titled Skeletons in the Closet & Other Creepy Stories in August 2010.

In 2006, I participated in a hilarious new TV series 'A Total Write-Off', hosted by comedian Barbara North. In 2004, I was nominated for the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Award. In 2003, I wrote a public service announcement for a racial harmony campaign. My PSA script, One Voice ~ One World, placed third and was produced and aired on cable channels in Alberta.

I have not only held hundreds of book signings, I have also organized multi-author signings, held virtual book tours and other online events, and I've taught others how to promote their books. My book How I Made Over $42,000 in 1 Month Selling My Kindle eBooks is the #1 Marketing book specifically designed for Amazon's KDP Select program.

I've been interviewed by numerous TV and radio stations in Canada and the US, and I've been featured in a variety of newspapers and magazines in both countries.

I'm also the publisher at Imajin Books, a venture that is dear to my heart. Imajin Books publishes quality international fiction at affordable prices, with a focus on ebooks.

Born in Vancouver, BC, I was a "military brat" and a "military wife" who has lived all across Canada and in Bermuda. I now reside in Edmonton, AB, with my husband Marc and our Pomeranian Princess, Chai.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I am currently working on EAGLE E.Y.E., book 2 in my E.Y.E. Spy Mystery series. This Qwickie novella should be out later this fall. I'm also working on a thriller. Ironically, I had the story plotted while living in Alberta, with the setting in Banff, but upon moving to West Kelowna, BC, I've decided to set the story here in the Okanagan Valley.

Social media: I believe social media is responsible for a high percentage of my sales. Whether Twitter or Facebook or Instagram, they each have a purpose, and authors should be using these. I built my following one connection at a time. I contacted and connected with other authors, particularly in my genres. I connected with other book professionals. I joined many groups on FB. I joined Tweet teams. But readers are the connections I enjoy most. I love chatting with a reader after they've read one of my works. My book launches used to be held at various Chapters, Coles, Indigo stores. I also did more blog tours in the past. Nowadays, I tend to do more social network events, especially FB launch parties. These make my book launches international.

Covers: We have a wonderful cover designer at Imajin Books, my publishing company. Ryan Doan is a magician. I can give him a cover concept in an email, explaining colors, mood and imagery, and he will make it appear.

Short stories and novellas: Imajin Books has trademarked "Qwickies" as a term used for novellas in the Qwickie imprint. I love writing stories of all lengths, but not all readers have time for long novels. Qwickies are designed to be short and complete (though many are series titles) reads for busy people. You can imagine the looks I get when I ask: "Have you had a Qwickie today?"

Author bundles: Deadly Dozen and Sweet & Sensual. Every author in a bundle has their own readership. When you bundle, you're sharing a much larger audience, and that definitely helps to bring in more sales of other works and new readers. The main objective of our two bundles was to give the authors involved increased exposure, especially since all authors involved did their own promoting of the bundles.

Reader list: although my list is combined with Imajin Books. I was sending 2 newsletters (one personal and one for IB) but that got to be too much work, so I've decided to send out only the IB one. My titles will get recognition there anyway, as well as the other authors published by Imajin Books. My mailing list has developed over the past 13 years from random emails from fans, list opt-ins via my website or the IB site, FB posts and more.

Blog: My primary goal with my blog is to entertain, educate and provide escapism to those needing it. For my Blogger blog, I like to feature other authors and events. I also have a blog on my website but I'll admit I haven't updated it as much as I'd like. It's difficult to find time to do everything--and to do it right. It's a fine balance, and some days I'm a bit tipsy.

Books in German and French: Amazon Crossing and Luzifer-Verlag are my two major foreign publishers, and I'm happy to report sales are going exceptionally well with both publishers. Imajin Books has also published some of my foreign titles. The German market is particularly HOT right now. The French market is not too shabby either, but that could be because of my French last name--Tardif. Both German and French readers have been awesome.

Changing hats: Most of my works are published under Cheryl Kaye Tardif, but I did write a steamy romantic suspense under Cherish D'Angelo. I did this because the sex scenes have more sizzle (though not erotica!) than my other works. But I went public about the name. There aren't many benefits to using a pseudonym and being secretive about it. Plus I'd spent years building up my Cheryl Kaye Tardif brand, and I didn't want to lose that audience. So I included both names on the cover.

Author Description:
Debra L Martin, science fiction and fantasy author, started writing with co-author, David W Small in 2006. Writing with a co-author is challenging in itself, but when 1 author lives on the East Coast and 1 lives on the West Coast, the challenges are a bit more daunting, but because we live in an electronic world of email, Instant Messenger and Skype, the partnership is totally workable. What makes the partnership even better is that David is my brother. We love the same types of books and that love naturally evolved into writing our own books.

"Witch's Curse," Book 2 in The Witch Stone Prophecy was released in July 2014. It's the sequel to the best-selling epic fantasy "Assassin's Curse". The final book in the series, WITCH STONE ASSASSIN, is currently under development.

"The Silver Cross" Book 1 in the series, VAMPIRE NIGHTLIFE was published in 2012. "The Silver Double Cross" Book 2 is currently under development and will be released in 2016.

If you enjoy Arthurian history with a twist, they have published "Quest for Nobility" and "Crystal Facade" in the RULE OF OTHARIA trilogy. The final volume, "The King's Last Word" is under development.

Devin knew one thing: he needed to escape his environment and get into college, beyond which he believed the world would open up to him. His memoir, Contrast, is his gift back to those who are looking for some inspiration and passion to move forward, not look back. A great life is measured by ones progress not perfection!

Author Description:
JAKE NEEDHAM is an American screen and television writer who began writing crime novels and legal thrillers when he realized he really didn't like movies and television very much.

He is a lawyer by education and held a number of significant positions in both the public and private sectors where he took part in a lengthy list of international operations he has absolutely no intention of telling you about. Then, somehow, he became a screenwriter following a series of accidents and coincidences too ridiculous to be believed.

Cricket Rohman
Wanted: An Honest Man With a little mystery and a little romance, WANTED: AN HONEST MAN captures the bittersweet growth of a young woman trying to make sense of her turbulent life.

Letters, Lovers, & Lies Mysterious, romantic, and sprinkled with a few heartwarming students and a delightful dog, LETTERS, LOVERS, & LIES captures the importance of persistence and the power of love. Jake and Lindsey are in love, but so much stands in their way. Letters from a dead man. Unwanted advances from a transgender acquaintance. Separation and jealousy. A few things in the couple’s favor? They are smart, multi-talented, and they love to laugh.

Hit The Road, Jake! Thrilling, romantic, and sprinkled with humor, HIT THE ROAD, JAKE! Reinvents the ‘buddy movie’ concept with the written word … and a pretty woman. Jake and Lindsey are good at tracking down offenders responsible for petty theft and blackmail, but when new mysteries become personal—slashed tires, spattered blood, steamy love letters, a stolen pet—everything changes.

Author Description:
Cricket grew up in Estes Park, Colorado, and spent her formative years among deer, bobcats, coyotes and beautiful blue columbine. Today she is a full-time author writing about the great outdoors, teachers, dogs, love, laughter, and life’s little mysteries—think romantic suspense.

Prior to writing, Cricket's career path included the following jobs: actor, singer, audio/video producer, classroom teacher, school principal, and U of A, College of Education assistant professor.

The first three novels in The Lindsey Lark Series are--WANTED: AN HONEST MAN; LETTERS, LOVERS, & LIES; and HIT THE ROAD, JAKE!.

And, yes. All three books are works of fiction. REALLY! (Well, except the part about the dog; Cricket really had a dog like Wendell, the mastiff, who appears in every book.)
