SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: The Snake and your new Jake Wood series. Rumor has it that you have several books on the horizon including The Pact and The Target. Can you tell us the timeline for their releases and give us a little tease?

The Pact, Sarah Roberts Book Seventeen, comes out June 30 and is available for preorder on Amazon. My main character, Sarah, has the ability to hear the voice of her dead sister, Vivian, in her head. In The Pact, Sarah Roberts has lost her ability to hear her sister’s messages. All forms of communication with Vivian are gone. Unless Sarah fulfills a pact with Vivian, one she knows nothing about, their ties will remain severed forever. In a time capsule Vivian prepared almost twenty-five years ago when she was still alive, prophecies and documents await Sarah. Several of the documents are addressed to people Vivian thought Sarah might know in the future. When Sarah’s father mails these documents, Sarah’s world is flipped upside-down. Instead of Sarah hearing her sister and performing tasks, Sarah’s friends are the ones hearing Vivian’s words through the letters she wrote to them years ago. Back then, Vivian hadn’t been clear on what each person should do to save Sarah’s life. Since the near future affects Sarah personally, Vivian cannot intervene and communicate with her directly. The future becomes the enemy and the only way to stop it is to cease moving forward, to die. Sarah fights to stay alive without any spiritual guidance, something she has never done before, which becomes her undoing when she walks into a trap she cannot walk away from, and no one is there to save her.

The Target, Jake Wood Book Two, isn’t due out until October of this year and it’s a continuation of Book One, The Snake. In The Target, Jake’s going after a company that thinks they’re above the law while at the same time this company has sent people to silence Jake. While this is taking place, Jake needs to walk a fine line with the authorities as they’ve collected evidence that he may have been involved in a homicide.

In addition to those two novels coming out this year, I also have The Terror, Sarah Roberts Book Eighteen, coming out by September.

Lots of books coming out - lots to read!

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?

Social media has had an effect on sales, but I’ve found it difficult to measure. I use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr, yet I have found that the best advertising is simply writing another book. I talk to readers on these sites. I post photos of where I’m doing research. I often post a sale, but I hardly - if ever - try to directly cultivate readers through social media. In other words, I don’t use those platforms to post something like, “Buy my Book.”

My followers on Twitter and Instagram came together over the years by tweeting and posting photos. It has been several years in the making and I’m still actively building my social media sites. I’m not entirely sure how it has changed with book launches because it’s the direct emails that BookBub and Amazon send out help spur sales when a new release comes out. Readers go to those two sites and click the “Follow” button. That’s where promotion really kicks in for me.

Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

I’ve never done book signings. I’m open to it, but haven’t yet. Speaking and personal appearances? Yes, I love that side of the business. Just last month I did a reading on stage at a Writer’s Festival in British Columbia, Canada. Then a week later, I did a two-hour speech at a creative writing class in another city in B.C.

At this time, I don’t have a speaking engagement booked in the near future, but once one is booked, I often announce it on my Facebook Page. Join me there for updates.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

I usually choose the image for my covers, or at least convey to my cover designer what I’m thinking will work. Then, since my cover designer is extremely talented, he goes with it and returns (usually) with something I absolutely love.

We do work with a template, keeping my author name on the top half, then using the bottom for the title of the book. Now that we’ve done it for over thirty covers, it’s gotten quite easy.

I’ll often post on Facebook two cover ideas and wait for feedback from the readers to see which one they’re responding to positively and then go with that one.

You have written several short stories (Tales of Horror).. Can you tell us if they had an impact on the sales of your novels? Are shorty’s one of your styles of writing or are they created to give readers a sample of your work?

For me, I started my writing career doing short stories. I had written over twenty shorts before I tried a novel. By the time I had written three novels, I had completed over fifty short stories. Twisted Fate, my short story collection, has the best of those stories.

I’m a novel writer now. I haven’t written a short story in a couple of years.

I like the idea of bundling a series of novels. You have put together several sets of your novels from The Sarah Roberts Series. What was the impact on your other sales? What was your main objective in bundling your novels?

The main objective was to be able to give readers a financial incentive to buy three novels for the price of two. In addition to that, when I began uploading bundles to Amazon, it increased my title count which can make an author stand out better by offering increased visibility.

Between your book writing, blogging, marketing, family and all the other things that can get in your way, how do you manage your time? Do you have a set schedule or do you sort of play it by ear?

Time management is a big deal if you want to write several books per year. How I do it is by setting aside Monday to Friday as my writing days. I write 4000-5000 words per day, five days a week. When my word count is done, I go on Facebook, I browse online. I go read, spend time with my wife. But like everyone else who has a job, writing is my job and I work at my job five days per week on the day shift.

That has worked for me for the last six years without an issue.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

Offering a book for free has been a huge success for me. When I place a book in my series for free, like The Crypt, Book Three, readers will buy Book One and Book Two as they don’t like starting a series on Book Three. By doing this, I end up with a massive amount of sales because of a freebie. My main goal is to provide a book to a new reader for no money down who might not want to spend anything on an author they haven’t read yet.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

I used to maintain a reader list on my blog, but I stopped doing it. I understand it can be very effective to do this, but it wasn’t for me as much. Word of mouth seems to be a large motivator for my sales. And now that places like Amazon have a “follow” button on my author page, they maintain huge lists for me and fire off emails as new releases come out.

What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?

I never seek reviews, nor have I asked for them on social media. I know this sounds boring, but I simply write another book, and readers place reviews on them. I wish I could offer something more informative on this topic. I have one book with over 500 reviews and another novel at 498 reviews. The Snake came out three weeks ago and it has 16 already. I think it’s a natural process for readers to read something and let others in on what they’ve found.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to do this interview! It’s been an honor to work with you.

The Haunted - A Sarah Roberts Thriller, Book 12
Two decades ago, Sarah's sister Vivian was murdered. Vivian's consciousness has manifested itself in Sarah Roberts through Automatic Writing, but is now merging into Sarah's mind at a new level, causing Sarah to relive Vivian's brutal death almost daily.

Sarah moves into a cabin in northern California to be alone, to work things out. She visits a local psychologist to deal with what's happening to her, and researches the name Cole Lincoln, her old babysitter.

Lincoln was a police officer who lived next door to her. He abused her and threatened her life if she ever spoke of it. But he seems to have disappeared. Members of the police force where he used to work won't even acknowledge his name.

But Lincoln is alive and well. Since Sarah's name hit the national media with a cop killing in Canada and the priest killer case in Los Angeles, Cole has followed her exploits, watched her, and has waited for the day she would come after him.

That day has come.

While Sarah tries to deal with the haunting flashes of memory and images, Lincoln calls in a favor and gets her committed to a psychiatric hospital. To shed the darkness that torments her, Sarah needs to set things right by making Lincoln pay for what he did. But Lincoln has other plans, and Sarah doesn't see him coming until it's too late.

Sarah has fought for her life before. In The Haunted, she also fights for her sanity.

The Redeemed - A Sarah Roberts Thriller, Book 11
Four Catholic priests have been murdered in Los Angeles, each killed in a different way. Each priest's name is carved into a small crucifix found with the body. Someone with a deep-rooted hatred of Catholicism is targeting priests with a suspected history of deviant behavior.

The lead detective, David Hirst, calls on his friend Parkman for help and asks if he could bring Sarah Roberts along. Since Sarah is on a quest to redeem herself with her colleague Parkman after she had let him down in the past, she agrees to go to L.A. and do whatever she can to aid in the investigation.

When they arrive, they head straight to the crime scene of yet another dead priest. With Sarah's history of antagonizing cops, and a recent feature in newspapers around North America regarding the death of a Canadian officer, the LAPD don't want her help. Within days, Hirst regrets his decision and asks Sarah and Parkman to leave.

But the killer has other plans. According to the Bible, since Sarah is an automatic writer and talks to her dead sister, she is a practitioner of witchcraft and she works for the devil. Therefore she has to die, too.

Before she has a chance to leave L.A., the priest killer has carved her name into a small crucifix.

What he has in store for her is reminiscent of Eve in the Garden of Eden, a snake and a very painful way to die.

Sarah has the will to live, the tenacity to fight, and a little help from her sister on the other side as Vivian digs deep to change the way she sends messages to Sarah.

But channeling through Sarah's body and whispering to her takes a toll on Sarah, and she begins to feel and see Vivian's thoughts and memories. While Sarah fights to save herself, she's also trying to save her sanity as two vie for her consciousness.

The Scythe - The Mafia Trilogy Book 3
*Warning: Graphic Violence

In Book One, The Kill, the Italian Mafia go after the wrong man.
In Book Two, The Blade, the Gambino Family do it again.
In Book Three, The Scythe, the Russian Mafia have different plans. They want to take over Toronto, a territory so large it was previously thought to be too big for one family. But Darwin Kostas and his wife, Rosina, stand in the way.

As a peace offering to the Italians and the Chinese, the Russians intend to execute Darwin. First, they have to catch him, but using his wife as bait is not enough.

While the Russians attempt to organize a meeting of rival families where Darwin will be terminated, something the Italians tried twice and failed, Darwin realizes he is on his own.

With the FBI not able to help and his wife in the hands of the Mafia, Darwin decides the only way to win this war is to kill them all.

Darwin fights the Russians in the biggest Mafia war Toronto has ever seen in The Scythe, Book Three of the Mafia Trilogy, the final installment.

The Blade - The Mafia Trilogy Book 2
The safe house where Darwin and Rosina live is attacked. Five FBI agents are dead. Darwin Kostas has nowhere to turn, no one he can trust.

Darwin's phobias cause him great stress and now the media are calling him The Blade, even though he can't stand the sight of knives.

The FBI are hunting him. The Gambino family, violent mobsters associated with Italy's La Cosa Nostra, want to know who he works for before they execute him.

Darwin just wants to be left alone with his new wife so they can begin a domestic life, but that is not possible with so many people wanting him dead.

With evidence piling up against him, a crazed, half-blind FBI agent on his tail, and a relentless mobster planning Darwin's violent end, the only thing he has left to lose is his life.

Meanwhile, the Russian Mafia are moving into new territory in Toronto. They want to know who this Darwin guy is and why he is still breathing. When they show up to take possession of his body, Darwin has one surprise left for the mobsters before he dies.

The Kill - The Mafia Trilogy Book One
The Kill - Book One of The Mafia Trilogy

The son of the most ruthless Mafia boss in eastern Canada is killed, and the father wants revenge.

Darwin Kostas is a law-abiding Canadian, a writer with a new bride and a long list of phobias. His fear of the dark keeps him inside after the sun goes down. He also suffers from aichmophobia, an irrational fear of sharp and pointed objects. If confronted with a knife or a needle, his fear manifests as an out-of-control rage.

He's also the man who accidentally killed the heir to the Fuccini syndicate.

When the newlyweds honeymoon in Rome, a hit team follows. They keep waving things at Darwin--pointy things, like knives. He just can't control himself when that happens, and accidentally kills a few more 'made men.' The Mafia believes Darwin is a trained killer, hired to take them out, and declare an all-out war on the neurotic novelist.

Darwin returns to Toronto, but the hits keep coming. The FBI closes in, and a local biker gang offers Darwin their help.

Darwin just wants to be left alone with the lights on.
