This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.
Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.
Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.
Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our January 2016 crew.

Author Description:
An author of Contemporary Romantic Suspense, Jessica Lauryn is most intrigued by dark heroes, who have many demons to conquer...but little trouble enticing female companions into their beds! She feels that the best romances are those where the hero is already seducing the heroine from that first point of contact.
In Jessica's debut series, The Pinnacles of Power, five troubled bad boys: Ryan, Alec, Colin, Lucas and Jack must let go of the mistakes of their pasts as they battle the dangers surrounding an underground organization called Project Gemstone. Each man crosses paths with a strong, feisty heroine who has the ability to capture his heart and change the course of his life forever. Ryan's story, Dangerous Secret, kicks off the series in the picturesque town of North Conway, New Hampshire.
Jessica is a proud member of both Romance Writers of America and her local chapter, New Jersey Romance Writers. When she's not writing, she enjoys listening to as much 80's music as possible, keeping current with the story lines on Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless, shopping for the latest fashions and the prettiest of antiques, and taking long walks in nature where she can daydream about anything romantic. Though she resides in New Jersey, her heart belongs to the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire.
Interview Excerpt
Next: …currently working on a second 5-book romantic suspense series which centers around a fictitious theater in Briar Cliff Manor, New York. Years ago, two men--both of whom were in love with the same woman--forged a partnership that would bring their unique artistic vision to light.
Social media: As an author I definitely benefit from using social media and have found, since I began using it, that it is an excellent way to reach readers beyond the bounds of everyday life.
Personal appearances: I'll also be posting my release dates, blog tour and personal appearances as they are scheduled on my facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/jessicalaurynauthor/
Covers: My publisher, Siren BookStrand creates my covers for me however I'm asked by BookStrand to provide a description of what I would like to have appear on the cover as well as what I would not like to have appear.
Romance Writers of America: One of the greatest things about Romance Writers of America--(a wonderful organization if ever there was one!)--is that there are local chapters in many states across the country which provide the opportunities to meet and network with local writers.
Giveaways: At different times in 2015 I discounted 3 of my kindle titles to 99 cents and saw a definite boost in sales during these times. I've also done giveaways on fellow authors' blogs as well as on sites like The Romance Reviews and even my own facebook page. My goal with giveaways is to find new readers and also to provide a treat for my existing readers. Everyone loves a giveaway! :)
Book launch: I like to kick off book launches with a release party, usually on Facebook. I'll do giveaways at the "party" and play games that are sure to get everyone who logs in chatting about fun trivia pertaining to romance. During the weeks following I'll usually do a blog tour and, whenever possible, library and book store signings.
Reviews: In addition to the reviews posted by readers I have provided copies of my stories to sites such as The Romance Reviews and Readers' Favorite in exchange for an honest review. I find this is a great way to reach new readers as there is typically a lot of traffic on these sites.

Marcy McKay knew she wanted to write stories the moment she read about Oompa Loompas in the fourth grade. She's an award-winning short-story author and copywriter, as well as a freelance journalist. Her work has appeared in Writer's Digest, Accent West, Roots & Wings, The Write Practice, Write to Done, and Positive Writer and Jane Friedman.com. Marcy lives in Texas with her husband and two teens, who all still like her...most of the time.
For readers who enjoyed The Lovely Bones or Room, you're going to love Marcy McKay.
Interview Excerpt
Next: I'm working on Burger Heaven #2 right now: Life is very different for Copper Daniels, but to her, it's just a different kind of bad. A new mystery calls to her back to Eternal Peace Cemetery where a new mystery is buried six feet under. Heaven and hell collide as she fights the battle of her life.
Just starting: My goals are simple. Have fun and connect to people. My drugs of choice are Facebook and Twitter.
Book signings: My website has all that information:
http://marcymckay.com.
Short stories: I love all types of writing: novels, short stories, magazine articles. A Cemetery Plot Worth of Love is the free short story on my website that's the precursor to my novel. It's a thank you to people for signing up for my email list.
Support groups: The Texas Writers' League in Austin puts on an outstanding conference each summer that I try to attend. However, it's too far away for me to make their month meetings. Locally, I'm a member of the Panhandle Pro Writers and learn more of whatever the topic is that month...writing workshops, marketing, publishing. These are fun to attend because it's great to be around like-minded spirits.
Managing plots: In the past I've been completely old school and just used an Excel spreadsheet. However, I do write with Scrivener now (love it!), and it has a few features to help track different things.
Second Mudpie Writing Challenge: My goal was simple - pay it forward. Many writers are where I was 15 years ago...wanting to write, but to afraid to do so. We had 97 writers from all over the world participate in my 5-day online Challenge, exploring their creative fears, and how to overcome them. It was amazing. I'll do another one next January. People can keep in touch with me about it through my website.

Author Description:
Award-winning mystery author Meg Mims -- also one-half of the writing team of D.E. Ireland for the Agatha-nominated Eliza Doolittle & Henry Higgins Mystery series from Minotaur Books -- lives in Southeastern Michigan with her husband and a sweet Malti-poo. She loves writing novels, novellas and short stories, both contemporary and historical. Meg also earned a Spur Award for Best First Novel, a Laramie Award and an M.A. from Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction program.
She's loved reading mystery, western, historical, romance and other genre fiction since first grade's adventures of Spot, Dick and Jane. She has published hundreds of freelance articles. Meg enjoys gardening, crafts, watercolor painting, with housework last.
Interview Excerpt
Next: I'm working on a series for Kensington, the Teddy Bear Cozy Mysteries, set in Southeast Michigan, coming out in 2017 and featuring the amateur sleuth/owner of the Silver Bear Shop and Factory.
Social media is important, but the best draw for readership is your next book/books. While Twitter and Facebook can be fun, they can only serve as promotion tools on a limited basis.
Personal appearances: My writing partner and I will both be at Malice Domestic this year, April 29 through May 1st.
Covers: I tried hard to "brand them" with similar themes and colors. For Double Crossing and Double or Nothing, I worked with a cover designer once I got my rights back from the original publisher. When I decided to join Prairie Rose Publications, the owners allowed me to keep my covers intact. I'm an artist, so I have a specific "look"' I strive for and search for stock photos to purchase.
Short stories: I love writing short stories - and yes, I do believe they allow readers a glimpse into an author's style, including descriptions, character development, narrative and dialogue. It's much harder to write short, given the brief page span - as an author, I prefer writing a full novel. But novellas and short stories may help sales of longer works.
Author bundles: Prairie Rose Publications put together A Cowboy's Brand - and it's been quite popular. It's a great collection of full novels including Double Crossing, and you can't beat the price! Double or Nothing is also part of a collection - Love's First Touch.
Bundles: It's just one more way of giving the reader a chance to enjoy the "sets" -- Santa Paws, Santa Claws, and Home for the Holidays all take place in the same town where I'm setting my Teddy Bear Cozy Mysteries, but they focus on rescue dogs and cats with a Christmas theme. And for readers who don't want to be left "hanging" and want to know what happens to the characters in the first books, both the Double boxed set and The Keys to the Holidays give them the "whole picture" of the stories.
Giveaways: I haven't participated in "free" giveaways except through "blog hops" which are popular at Christmas time - and I enjoy "the spirit of giving" at that time of year. Even at 99c, these short novellas are a bargain. I have discounted my full-length books - from $2.99 to 99 cents. Primarily I believe writers do deserve to be paid like any workers. I haven't come across any obstacles that I can think of, except those "free download" websites which usually have a virus or malware embedded. Trust me, readers who want free books should wait for a blog hop or pay that 99 cents.
D.E. Ireland: My writing partner, Sharon Pisacreta, and I go way back - we met in college. I supported Sharon's earlier publishing career in romance, and we both started writing mystery fairly recently after raising our daughters. I came upon the idea of putting Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins together as amateur sleuths, but Sharon is more grounded in British history, while I'm far more into American history. We decided to collaborate, brainstormed the first two books; we write alternate chapters, revise, read it aloud, revising again, and our writing styles are quite similar. We tried to keep the spirit of George Bernard Shaw in the series, with witty dialogue and humor between Eliza and Higgins. Book 1, Wouldn't It Be Deadly, was a finalist for an Agatha in the Best Historical Mystery, 2015. We're hoping for similar success for Move Your Blooming Corpse and Book 3, Get Me to the Grave On Time.
Sharon's Berry Basket Cozy Mysteries will be debuting in November of this year from Kensington (writing as Sharon Farrow). My Teddy Bear Cozy Mysteries will debut in 2017, and I'll be writing as Meg Macy. So right now, we're focused on that.

After working for fifteen years as a cafeteria manager in an elementary school, I turned in my non-skid shoes for a bathrobe and slippers. Now I work at home, writing novels, ranting on Facebook and Twitter, and occasionally whisking a Swiffer across dusty surfaces.
Like thousands of others, I thought I could write romance, but soon discovered I was a dismal failure. I did increase my repertoire of adjectives such as throbbing, pulsing, thrumming, vibrating, hammering, pumping . . .
I live in the country north of Atlanta with my husband, and two molly-coddled cats. My two grown sons occasionally visit for clean laundry and a hot cooked meal.

Author Description:
I was born in Los Angeles and now make my home in Divide, Colorado. An avid reader (my parents tell everyone they had to move from our first home because I finished the local library), I always wanted to "fix" stories so the characters did what I wanted, in books, television, and the movies. Once I began writing, I found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery I intended to write rapidly became a romance.
However, my entry into the world of writing can be attributed to a "mistake" when my son mentioned the Highlander television series on a visit home. Being the "good mother" I began watching the show and soon connected with the world of fanfiction, first as a reader, then as a critique giver, and then, one brave weekend, I wrote my first short story.
Things snowballed and soon I was writing my first original novel. Much later, I mentioned something about a recent Highlander episode to my son, and he said, "Oh, I've never actually watched the show, I just thought the concept was cool." Little did he know what he'd started.
I love getting into the minds of my characters, turning them loose in tight spots and seeing what they do. Too often, they surprise me.
My published works include the Pine Hills Police Series, the Blackthorne, Inc. series as well as the Romantic Suspense novel, What's in a Name? and the Mapleton Mystery series. I've also published numerous short stories with The Wild Rose Press.

I once thought a great mystery or fantasy book with strong romantic themes was the highest level of reading bliss. After reading my first romantic suspense novel, I never looked back. Before long, the need to create my own stories took over. I spend my days in the clinical profession of medical transcriptionist, but my passion is in the blissful hours spent with my characters in the evenings.
I live in the western United States, and when I'm not writing I love playing cards with my family, bowling, and snuggling with my lazy kitties.

Author Description:
I'm a 28 year old recent law graduate with a B.S. in Economics from the University of Utah. I've been writing stories since I was able to hold a pencil and have always loved escaping into books. In the real world I enjoy the beautiful outdoors (but usually only for day outings, otherwise my allergies get the best of me). I particularly love skiing and swimming.
As for indoors, when I'm not lost in a book somewhere, I enjoy a good game of chess or pinochle. Or now and again a good computer game.
In June of 2014, I got married and we honeymooned across mainland Europe. It was stressful but fun. Even though it meant six flights (I genuinely do not like flying, although I've never let that stop me from doing so).
I have two brothers, one sister, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and no children, and so far no nieces or nephews.
I cite Orson Scott Card and J.K. Rowling as my primary influences, however others whose influence has been noteworthy include: Carl Sagan, Gene Roddenberry, George Lucas, Isaac Asimov and--last but not least--the two fantasy greats: George R.R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien (I suppose it's a rule somewhere that to be a legendary writer of fantasy one must have two R's in one's name).
Currently, Allyson and I live in Sugarhouse, Utah.

Author Description:
I'm originally from Hawaii where I grew up listening to fascinating stories of my family and the people around them from my mother. As far back as I can remember, I loved books. I wrote in a notebook at the age of eight, "I want to grow up to be an author."
I loved everything from fairy tales to historical fiction and non-fiction. Books were my passion and my best friends. I preferred reading books to playing with toys. It took me around the world to places I yearned to go to and places I wanted to see. I could be anyone and do the impossible. I became a princess, an equestrian, an adventurer, a warrior, or a ballerina.
As an author and a woman who has lived a roller coaster life, my desire is to bring this magical world where everything is possible to anyone who dreams. I want my readers to fall in love with my characters, get mad at them, cry with them, laugh with them, and become a part of their lives. I'd like to take my readers on a journey they will never forget so at the end of the story, the readers will feel like they were part of my made-up world. I wish for them to learn something new and discover new ways of looking at people and situations. I hope to challenge my readers to think in a way they've never thought before. Most of all, I want my stories to resonate in the hearts of everyone who reads my books. And, of course, I wish to entertain. Thank you and Aloha for reading my stories.
