Excerpt from The Reunion
“Are the kids asleep?” Candy asked. She was sitting at the small writing desk in their massive bedroom, which could have been a suite in itself, with a massive four-poster and a new sectional in front of a fireplace that Neil couldn’t remember ever having been used. He loved the colors, the red and gold, the dark wood, and the local native art covering the walls.
“Bathed, fed, watered, and tucked in for the night,” he replied. “Cat was out by the time her head hit the pillow, snuggled in beside little Becky, and she was out, too, by the time I finished that last story. Michael dropped off to sleep before he finished his bottle.”
Neil loved his children and enjoyed these moments when he could be a part of their lives, doing the small things he realized his brothers never did. He kicked off his sandals, feeling gritty from the humid heat that had blasted in. It was as if Cancun had only two seasons: summer and summer. Then again, there was also the stormy season.
Candy was watching him as she slid around in that straight-backed chair, putting the pen she was holding down on top of the small diary she’d started writing in. Instead of closing it this time, she left it open, her hand resting on the side of the hardcover book. Maybe she noticed the way he took in the book and her neat penmanship as he walked toward her.
“Good,” she replied. She was looking at him, and he could see the vulnerability and shyness in her, which would surface at the oddest times. He stopped right beside her, touching her bare shoulder. She was stunning even in shorts and a tank top. She was slim and curvy, and he loved her long, straight hair even though she insisted on pulling it back and knotting it on top of her head. He reached behind and unclipped it, and the silky strands slipped past her shoulders and down her back. Her hair was long enough to reach her waist, and he loved running his hands through it.
He slid both hands over her cheeks, holding her face as he leaned down and kissed her, allowing his lips to linger for a few seconds. He didn’t push the kiss, pulling back just enough to rub his nose with hers and feel her warm breath mix with his.
Candy slid her hand over his wrist as he watched her. Her dark eyes could, at times, smolder with a fire that turned from passion to anger so fast it made his head spin. He had seen enough anger from her when she thought she hated him, back before the storm. The passion was something he brought to life every time he had her under him or when she rode him, slow and easy, in the morning before either was really awake. His woman was complicated, anything but simple, even though he knew she believed she was ordinary. No, his Candy was the best. She was the world to him. She was a single-malt whiskey that was smooth and burning, one he could appreciate. He wondered whether she’d ever believe how good she was. At one time, he knew she believed she wasn’t good enough for him, but the truth was that he wasn’t good enough for her. She was the prize.
“You all right?” She gave him an odd look and ran her hand up his arm. He loved it when she touched him.
“Of course. Was just thinking how lucky I am.”
“Oh?” She smiled up at him and left her book open as she stood, putting her hand on the flat of his chest and stepping closer so he could wrap his arms around her. She fit so perfectly, and he could have looked down at her book and read it, he was so close. But he couldn’t do that to her. The diary was hers, her thoughts, something personal and private. He knew he couldn’t cross that line—even though he wanted to know everything she was thinking at every moment.
“You love writing in that book,” he said. “What it is you put down in there?”
Candy couldn’t hide from him, and he could sense the moment she felt uneasy. It was so subtle, the change in her body, from leaning into him, her energy reaching out and touching him, to pulling away. He rubbed her back and lower, over her sweet ass, holding her to him, not hard but in a way that let her know she could step away if she wanted. He wanted her with him, always, to stay close to him, but it had to be her choice. That nearly killed him at times, but the saying was “If you love someone, set her free, for if she truly loves you, she will always return.” For Neil right now, because of what he’d done, he’d learned that with Candy, it was so true. He couldn’t push, not ever again.
She was pulling her lower lip in between her teeth, so he reached up and ran his thumb over it until she let it go. “You’ll think it’s silly,” she said.
“No, I don’t think it’s silly. It’s important to you, it means something to you, so it’s important to me. Nothing you ever do is silly.”
She appeared surprised by what he said. He wondered whether him being so possessive of her, attempting to rearrange things for her, taking care of everything, had made her think he would pry. She opened her mouth to say something, and he could feel her relax against him as she slid her hand up his chest. He could feel the slight tremble in her hand.
“You don’t have to share it,” he said.
Her eyes darted up so fast. He could see the surprise, maybe because he’d always pushed, expecting her to share everything, body, mind, and soul. He still wanted that, but something had changed when he’d hurt her with his betrayal—his secrets.
No more, ever.
“They’re just my thoughts, feelings,” she said, and she didn’t need to say any more. He could tell she expected him to push.
“These are things you don’t want to share with me?” He had to know, to have some idea of where she was in her head with him, just to understand where they still needed to go to heal.
“You’d think they’re silly, I’m sure. I’d feel foolish voicing them, but I want to be able to put it down. It helps me,” she whispered.
He nodded although he couldn’t help feeling a little hurt that she didn’t want to share everything with him. He also knew he couldn’t push, not anymore.
“Thank you,” she said.
“For what?”
“For not pushing, for not insisting on reading it. You’ve never looked at it, have you?”
Before, he would have. That was the old Neil, who was so obsessed with having Candy and molding her into who he believed she should be. What a fool he’d been. “No, I wouldn’t do that, although I am curious,” he teased.
She slid her hand around his waist and slapped his butt playfully, hugging him closer. She had the most beautiful smile as she leaned in and tilted her head up, again biting her lower lip. “Maybe one day I’ll show you.”
What could he say to that? She watched him with a lightness in her eyes that melted away the uncertainty that had been between them moments ago. He wanted her to trust him again. Oh, he knew she did in some things, but he wanted that ultimate trust where she would believe that her precious, vulnerable heart would be safe with him regardless of what life threw their way. If and when she trusted him completely again, he swore to God that he would never let her down again.
“I would love that,” he said.
