SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath. Do you have another book on the horizon? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Yes, I’m working on The Makers (Book 2 of the H.A.L.F. series). It’s due out late Spring, 2016. Here’s a little teaser from my first draft of the first chapter:

Erika’s eyes were open but she saw nothing. She closed her eyes in an effort to shut out the unnatural black void around her.

But it was no good. The black void in her mind was no better than the darkness of the ship she presumed she was in.

Erika tried not to panic. Maybe they immoblize us for our own safety while traveling in space. Since humans had never achieved interstellar travel, there was no reference point for how it was done. Don’t panic. She remembered Jack’s words. “Cowboy up,” he’d said. Erika wasn’t sure she was cowboy enough for space travel.

As much as she tried to talk herself out of abject terror, fear wound itself into every fold of her grey matter. She could not shake the feeling, roiling away in her gut like a bubbling cauldron, that she had made a big mistake. And she’d pulled Ian along with her into an abyss of the dark unknown.

You have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been? How did you build your following in your niche? Do you see a carry over to your writing success?

I think I’m still trying to find a way to build a following in my “niche”! Truly, it’s difficult. But, I’ve learned a few things over the years since I began building my social media platform in early 2011.

First, you need to be yourself. I know that sounds cliche, but it’s true.

Second, in order to be yourself, you need to figure out who you are. Obvious, but most times I don’t think people think about what they want to say before they start saying it. I know I didn’t. If you’re new to building a social media platform (or if you want to revamp yours), spend the time to think about what you stand for. What is important to you? What is your “brand?” Think about what you want to say and think about who you want to say it to. That will help you to narrow your field so you’re not splattering yourself all over the place.

And IMO, people think that they’re going to build this great social media platform will a gazillion followers and that they’ll then automatically sell a gazillion books (or widgets or whatever). It doesn’t work that way. Social media is not a great way to SELL things. An email list is a much better sales tool (and the one place authors should concentrate their efforts). Social media is great for staying in touch with fans you’ve already made, but it is not the best way to sell things.

Bottom line on author platform for me (and different perhaps than what you may hear from others): Blog consistently and smartly and build and interact (again consistently and smartly) with your email list. If you do these two things, it will go much farther to help you build your author platform than anything else.

My two cents ;-)

You do a lot of book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? When and where is the next place that your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

My next appearance will be on the Donna Seebo radio show (you can find it here) on August 14 live at 9:00 am (PST). My next live appearance will be at Rose City Comic Con in Portland, OR Sept. 19 & 20; Salt Lake City Comic Con Sept. 24-26; Santa Fe Comic Con October 23-25; and my last appearance this year will be Tucson Comic Con (yay Tucson!), Nov. 6-8.

Readers can see my entire appearance calendar here.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? I have to ask this. Since Emily is a redhead, is she modeled after anyone we know?

Thank you for your kind words about my covers. The covers for The Akasha Chronicles series books (Emily’s House, Emily’s Trial and Emily’s Heart) represent the combined efforts of several very talented women. I had a general idea of what I wanted to see on the cover - the feeling, mostly, was what I told the artist. The cover art was created by Claudia McKinney at PhatPuppy Art. The cover model for Emily’s Trial and Emily’s Heart is model Ashley Phillips. We found her through a casting call. The photographer is Theresa Yeh.

Emily isn’t modeled after anyone I know exactly. My daughter and I both have red hair, so I thought it would be cool to have my main character in my first series to have red hair too. At the time, I hadn’t seen a lot of main characters with redhair (though I’m seeing it more frequently now).

For H.A.L.F., I went a different direction. The cover art and cover design is by Dane at eBook Launch. I had come up with the design of the symbol (it’s the symbol for the Makers) and I wanted it to have a sci fi feel since the series is sci fi. I really love covers that are symbolic (think Hunger Games and Twilight) rather than literal so that’s what Dane had to work with - a drawing of a symbol I had scratched on a piece of paper and my preference for symbolic covers. I think he did a great job. I can’t wait to see what he does for the next cover!

You have several great book trailers. (See links below.) They look very professional. Do you know how much impact they have had on your book’s success? Tell us about the process that you used to create your trailers? Do you use the trailer in your character development? Are the pictures and background the way you see your characters and scenes?

Again, thank you for your kind words about the trailers. I created the trailers for Emily’s Trial, Emily’s Heart and The Deep Beneath. I have an art background and love playing with iMovie, so it’s a fun process. Generally, I begin working on the trailer after I have the first draft written. It is a helpful process. In order to do a 30-60 second min-movie, you need to hone in on the essential elements of your story.

The trailer creation process starts with finding the right music. I have to use music to which I can buy rights (you can’t just use your favorite tune downloaded from iTunes), so I generally spend a fair amount of time searching for the perfect song that I can afford!

I lay down the music track first then I brainstorm words that fit the story and the mood I’m trying to create. Then I go on photo sites and search for pictures and videos. Again, a LOT of time. Many evenings with my laptop. I’ll download things I like to my “lightbox” and I generally see a theme emerge. I play with it, laying pics and videos down on top of the music. Work with the timing. Deciding if I want to put some words in here and there and writing out the “script” of what I want to say. Once I’ve got it down, I buy the rights to what I need and clean it all up.

The process is LONG! But I really enjoy doing it and it does help me with story creation. After I’ve narrowed my entire story down to a 30 second movie, it is much easier to write a book description or tagline.

I have no idea if the trailers help sell books! But I enjoy doing it and I know some fans enjoy them, so I’ll keep doing it whether it helps sell books or not.

I like the idea of bundling a series of novels. You have put together a set of your novels called Akasha Chronicles Trilogy Boxed Set. What was the impact on your other sales? What was your main objective in bundling your novels?

I decided to bundle the novels so that I could offer the boxed set to readers at a better price than what they’d pay to buy each individually. Also, I have the boxed set in the Amazon KDP Select program so it can be borrowed by Prime and KU members (and I can run countdown deals too). Since I launched the boxed set last year, most of my sales in that series are the boxed set (the individual books are rarely purchased now, at least on Amazon).

In general, I think it’s a good idea to try to get as many products out for consumers are you can. So H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath, for example is available in paperback, hardcover, ebook and audiobook. I’ll do that for each book and when the entire series is finished, I’ll create a digital boxed set. This gives readers more options and helps you capture sales. Some people, for example, only listen to audio books so if you don’t have an audio book out, you’re missing that potential reader. I think this is true for all of the types of books. And some people really like boxed sets so they can go seamlessly from book to book in a series without having to stop. Voracious readers love that! So give readers what they want and you’ll see your sales expand.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

Wow, lots to say on this topic and perhaps too long a story for here! My bottom line on this is that after much trial and error with various things, I no longer do “free days” on Amazon. I have done (and will continue to do) sales where one of my books goes to 99 cents (and these are quite successful), but IMO, free days are a waste. Readers snap up all these free books and many never read them. In my experience, I have had much more success with a 99 cent sale (i.e. not only sales, but readers leaving reviews).

Having said that, I give away a fair number of books in giveaways that I participate in on blog tours, on my own Facebook page/blog, and when I go to events. I also donate books to libraries and hospitals and such. I actually prefer giving away a paperback in a giveaway because I feel it’s more probable that the winner will actually read it. My advice on giveaways is to always give away a book from your backlist, not the book you’re currently promoting. Again, learned that the hard way.

Giveaways and donations are a great way to build goodwill with readers. It’s a way to be generous and that is always a good thing. Like other things we’ve talked about here, think of what you’re trying to accomplish with your giveaway and focus on that.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

I use Mail Chimp to manage my email lists. I actually have a couple of different lists I manage. One, for example, is a list of people who have signed up for my list at the Tucson Festival of Books. I have another list just for comic con folks and a list people sign up for from my blog or other places on the web. Having different lists helps me to tailor my message at times. For example, before the TFOB, I’ll send just that list an email telling them where my booth is, etc.

I go to a number of well-attended events each year (events generally between 25,000-150,000 in attendance), so I always make sure I have an email signup sheet with me. I chat with readers and ask them to sign up if they buy a book so we can stay in touch. This is a great way to build your list. I also build my list via Rafflecopter giveaways in various places (on my own blog and blog tours, etc.). I always have signing up to my email list as one way to enter the giveaway. I also have a pop-up I recently installed on my website/blog, and that is (surprisingly) helping me grow my list.

You provide a Beta reader service. Can you explain how that works and how can authors obtain your services?

I began my beta readers service last year and I really enjoy it. I provide more of a mini content edit more than a mere “beta read”, but I didn’t know what else to call it. Maybe I should call it a “Beta Read Plus.”

My purpose with the beta reader service is to give writers a reasonably priced way to get early feedback on their entire manuscript. I read through the whole manuscript and make in-line comments in the margins that deal with the content. Things such as inconsistencies, sentences that need reworked for clarity and the like. I also get into character development. I let the writer know my feelings about the characters. I point out plot holes and dropped threads. I also point out things I enjoy as well so that the writer can see places where he or she is doing a great job of pulling me in (and then of course letting them know places where they’re losing me).

If a writer is interested in my services, I suggest they look first at the page on my website dedicated to this ( here to see prices and more details. If they want to set up a service, they can email me at NatWritesYA (at) gmail (dot) com to get started.

This year’s Tucson Festival of Books was a great event, enjoyed by thousands. A Book festival is a unique selling situation. How did you prepare for the festival? Did it meet your goals? If you had to do something different next year, what would that be?

Wow, the TFOB seems so long ago now! Generally, I have loved doing the TFOB event. In past years, I got to meet lots of young readers and of course sell loads of books. The first two years, the TFOB was my single biggest sales weekend the entire year.

I approach TFOB as I approach comic cons or any other such events attended by large numbers. My goal is to interact with people. Make conversation. Talk story. That way, even if you’re not selling books, you’re having a good time (and if you engage people in conversation, they just may buy a book).

This year (2015) was my third year at the TFOB and it was my worst. :-( I just did not see the traffic I have seen in the past and I didn’t see hardly any folks in my target age group (ages 12-18). My booth was in a pretty rotten place (as it was the year before too), so I don’t know if that had an effect or if the TFOB is losing momentum. There just weren’t people coming by to even chat with and I didn’t see my “regular” customers. It was a disappointment (and my booth was so pretty!). I am strongly considering taking a break from TFOB in 2016 and attending as a patron only. We’ll see.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Let’s start with what’s next. Do you have another book on the horizon? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Melodie and I have just signed the contract for A KILLER NECKLACE. Release date this fall? Sneak peek: A fashionista investigates murder before walking down the aisle.

Do you do any book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

Oh yes. I’m out there. Next up—our A KILLER NECKLACE launch. A “heads up” to readers in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada: Melodie and I still meet to discuss our books in your downtown library; therefore, we think it might make the perfect launch pad for A KILLER NECKLACE! Stay tuned to Vegetarian Detective and Fashionation with Mystery!

You have a great book trailer. (See link below.) It looks very professional. Do you know how much impact it has had on your book’s success? Tell us about the process that you used to create your trailer?

Thanks James, I love our trailer too. Doesn’t it reveal A PURSE TO DIE FOR’s darker side? Nevertheless, our publisher doesn’t feel trailers are a huge selling point; therefore, for the most part, future Imajin Books publications will not include a trailer. [Sad face.] I would gladly fill out a Book Trailer Checklist once more, filling in the blanks after “Type of music desired” and “Imagery of importance”.

You have written a short story called Hide and Seek for Grown-ups in which visitors to your blog can read free. Can you tell us if it had an impact on the sales of your novels? Are shorty’s one of your styles of writing or are they created to give readers a sample of your work?

Did you like “Hide and Seek for Grown-ups”, James? Authors don’t get as much feedback as one might think. Also you ask, does a free short story impact sales? Who knows, but I sure like writing them. They are absolutely not just for sample purposes. In fact, I wish there were a larger audience for short stories. Agents and editors swear they can’t sell short story anthologies in general. Wouldn’t you know it, I have a bunch of short mysteries; am working on one right now, even, about a deadly shooting in a cancer center. Readers, I suppose if you want to read more published short stories, you’ll just have to get loud and demand them.

I like the idea of Author bundles. You are a part of a novel collection called Deadly Dozen which was highlighted here on the Author’s Spotlight blog.
What was the impact on your other sales? What was the main objective of bundling your works with other mystery authors? How did you put something like that together?

Being honest about impact here, A PURSE TO DIE FOR is my only published mystery novel. But A KILLER NECKLACE is coming soon. Wonderful DEADLY DOZEN’s main objective is to provide an enticingly priced product for readers. Pay a little more, get a lot more type thing. Imajin Books gets all the credit for the bundle!

Besides the Crime Writers of Canada, what other writer support groups do you belong too? Do they help with the writing, marketing and the publishing process?

I also belong to Write Now @ King. [Virtual wave to you guys!] We don’t dwell that much on the publishing/marketing end of things, but my do we benefit from creative sharing, motivation, and artsy-fartsy camaraderie!

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

In 2012, when A PURSE TO DIE FOR came out, we benefitted from free “sales”. No obstacles there. On the contrary, word got out. Maybe writing is a like acting. Excellent training credentials aren’t necessarily enough to land you a big role right off the bat, so to get a foot in the Hollywood door, you accept roles in low-budget slasher films. Meanwhile, you continue to learn, to grow, and once you prove your acting chops, you aim for bigger-budget movies. And the chance to work with more directors and actors you admire. And not for free.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

All you who have purchased a paperback from me personally are on my reader list. I also treasure the relationships I’ve made through my blog and Google+ and Twitter, but I don’t surreptitiously collect e-mail addresses like I suppose large corporations do. Just like everybody else, I hate to receive unsolicited marketing calls, letters, e-mails, knocks on doors… So my goal is to engage readers through open channels, so much so that they desire to keep in touch.

Living in Canada creates a unique selling and marketing situation. Where is your biggest audience? Does marketing online help in this situation? Do you plan on publishing your books in other languages like French?

Excellent question. Last I checked, and I admit that was a long time ago because I’m not so much a numbers person, Canada’s population was roughly the same as that of the State of California. Small wonder that most of our sales come from the US. Of course this is only possible because of the Internet. And it’s funny you should ask about French translation. I was just saying to Melodie that I would like to approach editors in Québec. I lived in la belle province near the tree line for ten years. Now, after 25 years here in my native English Canada, my written and spoken French is getting a little rusty, but I still consider myself bilingual and I love, love, love the French language.

You teamed with Melodie Campbell to write ‘A Purse to Die For’. (See book outline below) How did that process work? How did you communicate your ideas?

I also love writing with Melodie. So much more motivating than writing by oneself. We exchange chapters, you see, and I don’t know what’s coming until I read it, and then I get to continue the story any way I want. It’s exactly like a digital, interactive story. We may shuffle things around during the process or at the end when we’re editing, but that’s the gist of it—back and forth. With plenty of personal e-mails in between in which we also talk about our story. Then of course there are our meetings, which often take the form of chat about our book then an all-important girls’ lunch out!

Next: My next book is a full-length Duncan Dewar Mystery, set in Spain. Duncan is offered a lucrative case that could jump start his new company. At first, it appears to be the typical industrial accident he used to investigate. Further review makes him wonder. I’m hoping this book will be ready for release in July.

Social media: My followers on Twitter have helped immensely in getting the word out about my books. I’ve found Twitter to be a supportive environment overall.

Covers: I have a hands-on approach to my covers, providing the designer with the tartan backgrounds (yes, every background is a Scottish tartan), frames, and picture inside the frame. My cover designer does a great job of bringing it all together with fonts and color washes.

Book trailer for The Snail Man: I went with a recommendation for the producer of my book trailer. I’m not sure of its impact on book sales/exposure. I provided the producer with photos that reflected the contents of The Snail Man and a plot summary. She did the rest.

Short story: I find writing a short story very challenging. A Crime At the Bakery was written to further develop some of my characters in the fictional village of Taye, Scotland. Also, I wanted the readers to know things were happening back in Scotland while Duncan was investigating a case in Spain. A Crime At the Bakery also gave folks something to read in the series while awaiting the next full length novel.

Support groups: I am now a member of ASMSG as well as IAN. Both groups, along with the helpful people I’ve met on Facebook and Twitter, have provided guidance in publishing and promoting books.

Giveaways: Ah, the double-edged sword of giveaways! I promoted my first book, The Snail Man, with a giveaway when it first came out. Giving your book away for free can really garner a lot of attention. However, not all of that attention is positive. Whenever folks can get your book free of charge, you will attract some people who are only looking for books to slam in reviews. So, the author must decide if the positive aspects of the exposure are worth the negative.

Next: A collection of short stories based in the Kyn Kronicles universe plus TOUCHED BY FATE in early 2016

Social media buzz: Concept of an author’s platform - have a website, newsletter and blog plus a Facebook page, a Twitter, Google+, Goodreads, Pinterest accounts.

Personal appearances: I do interviews all over the blog-o-sphere. Every time I have a guest post, I put it up on my Facebook and Twitter so if readers want to follow along they can. Plus, I have a page on my website with my summer schedule of who’s at my place, as well.

Covers: I have to credit Kim Killion and Hot Damn Designs for my Kyn covers. HUNTED BY THE PAST’s cover was done by the fantastic MuseIt Up cover artist, Celairen.

Audio book SHADOW’S EDGE: ...the process is fairly involved. I haven’t noticed a correlation between having SHADOW’S EDGE in audio and my print sales, but I would love to have all my titles in audio. I know quite a few readers who prefer audio vs. book. I think if I could expand my audio offerings, I could reach a larger audience.

Short story: Actually, shorts are one of the hardest story types for me to write in. As a series writer, I prefer full length novels. WRAPPED IN SHADOWS was my first attempt at shorts, and I was thrilled to have an opprotunity to give readers a glimpse into the Kyn world and discover some great writers.

Author bundles: THINGS THAT GO BUMP FOR THE HOLIDAYS was a collective concept from the writers of Black Opal Books. We split into two groups: Paranormal and non-paranormal. Then we created two different anthologies. It was fun to do, made me stretch outside my comfort zone and attempt short story writing, but it also provided a great vehicle for readers to discover new writers

Free books: This is actually the first time I’ve given any book away free. SHADOW’S EDGE is free through the end of August. It took me a long time to make this decision because writing is not painless, much like any artistic creation, I pour my heart into my stories, and it hurts to give it away free.

Blogging: When I first began working with an author platform, one the main pieces of advice I kept running across was to make sure you blogged regularly. Now for some that’s everyday, but I know me, and if I don’t want to end up bald, once a week is what I can manage. At first I used my blog to share my journey from final draft to publication…

Next: I’m very excited about The Silent Room. It’s my first standalone thriller featuring Special Branch detective Matt Ryan and it’ll be published on 19th November in the UK and is out on submission in Europe and the US.

Social media: When my agent suggested that I join Twitter, I had reservations to be perfectly honest, but publishers expect authors to build a social media profile and Twitter has certainly done that. It’s always difficult to judge whether or not activity on such platforms impacts on sales, but the fact that crime fiction readers can contact me in this way is wonderful.

Personal appearances: My events page can be found at www.marihannah.com and people can chat with me here on Twitter: @mariwriter

Covers: I have Harper Collins/Witness Impulse art department to thank for that. I have little input initially. They are briefed by my editor in the first instance and then sent over for my approval and that of my agent. We then collaborate on what we like/don’t like until we get it right. Any reader comments I receive are fed back to my publisher.

Support groups: Crime Writers’ Association plus I’m a member of the International Thriller Writers and the Society of Authors. The SOA in particular is a great source of advice and information for authors. They cover a huge variety of subjects too great to mention here. They also champion the cause for decent standards of pay too, which is great.

Giveaways: My publishers often give books away around the time of publication to bloggers and reviewers. It generates a buzz around a new title. I have also run competitions from time to time. It’s a fun thing to do. Readers love to get involved in that kind of thing. And from my point of view, it’s a way of giving back to those readers who support me.

Foreign language publishing: Strangely enough, I was published in German before I found a publisher in the UK and US. I have two titles out there. Germany is a big market to conquer and I have many fans there, some who read the books in English, not in their first language. My audience abroad is growing year on year, especially in Australia, Canada and the US where the success of ebooks has led to physical books across the whole of the Kate Daniels series.

Next: Southern Exposure, a comic romantic mystery, is scheduled to be released next spring.

Personal appearances: I'm an extrovert, so I really enjoy book signings and other personal appearances, although I am a little shy when it comes to public speaking. So far this year, I've participated in three multi-author book signings and two writers' conferences...The best way for readers to keep up with my in-person events is to check my website's "The Scoop" page. I always love meeting readers, both in-person and online!

Covers: I've worked with several great book cover designers and always value their input. However, I pick the stock photos for the covers and the branded look for the font, colors, etc. Designers appreciate when an author comes to them with a clear vision of the cover because it saves them time -- they have to design fewer cover drafts.

Short stories: "Love Unleashed" is my shortest story (12,000 words), and I wrote it originally for an American Heart Association fundraiser that asked for short stories. "Heating Up the Holidays" is a standard-sized novella (22,000 words). My upcoming Klein's K-9s trilogy of novellas will all be between 20,000 and 40,000 words. Writing short can be more challenging than writing a full-length book because you have to fit a lot of character development into a small word count.

Author bundles: I love participating in romance ebook anthologies (or boxed sets, as many people call them). Not only do I get to work with a great group of authors, but we each get one of our stories in front of the other authors' readers. This can and does lead to an increase in sales of our other books and novellas. So these boxed sets are a way of co-promoting with other authors. That saves time and money, since we're splitting the jobs (running a Facebook page, contacting advertisers, coordinating the cover and formatting, etc.) and the cost (paying for advertising, the cover, the formatting, etc.) And the boxed sets are a great deal for readers, too, since most of them include at least ten stories for 99 cents.

Reader list: I send out a monthly enewsletter on Yahoo (although I plan to move the newsletter to MailChimp next year), and readers can sign up to receive it on my website's Home and Contest pages. To encourage readers to subscribe to the enewsletter, I hold a monthly contest on my website, and the enewsletter includes contest updates.

The James Gang: I had a very clear vision of how I wanted my website (www.MarciaJames.net) to look, because it needed to reinforce -- through images, text, fonts, and colors -- my brand of writing "Hot, Humorous Romances" featuring pets. Before I became a romance author, I worked as a writer: an advertising copywriter, a corporate scriptwriter, a nonfiction publication writer, etc. It was important to me that I be as professional as a fiction author as I was at my other writing careers. I want to write romances for the rest of my life -- stories that entertain readers and take them away from their worries for a while. I also want to make a good living writing romances. So that is my goal.

Interviewing other authors for my James Gang page is a way to cross-promote with the authors. I'm promoting them, and they're promoting the interviews on my website. But I also try to promote other authors on my Facebook page and at my booksignings. I was at an event in June with urban fantasy author Darynda Jones. I love her books and talked them up to everyone I met. The flip side of this is I never put down an author's books or leave bad reviews. Whether or not a reader (myself included) likes a book can be very subjective.

Smokey, your Chinese Crested hairless dog author logo: My first book (At Her Command) featured a tiny Chinese crested hairless dog who was a DEA drug-sniffing dog. I chose the most incongruous breed to be a DEA dog, and I enjoyed the humor that came from pairing the tough, Alpha-male police detective hero with this tiny, goofy-looking dog. Since I'm a sucker for any book with a dog character, I decided my books would always feature pets -- and always at least one crested as my Alfred Hitchcock (who appeared in most of his films).

Next: Right now I’m revising Book 3 of 4 in the Awakening series, working title The Conflagration. I’d love to release it by the end of the year, but I tend to have an optimistic relationship with time, so Spring 2016 is probably a better bet.

Social media: I love Twitter. I’ve met some wonderful people there, including Shiromi Arserio, the producer/ narrator of the audiobook version of The Unbelievers, which will be released shortly...It’s hard to keep up with everything, so for social media I concentrate on Twitter, Facebook, and Goodreads. (Though I love Pinterest for wish fulfillment when it comes to decorating and travel sites).

Personal appearances: The best way to learn about where I’ll be is to join my email list at this link: http://bit.ly/1LFM5IU or visit The Awakening’s Facebook page:
I don’t have any events scheduled right now, but I’m working with a health and lifestyle coach to put together a joint workshop on how your innate creativity can help you manage stress.

Audio book: I have reached some new readers, or listeners, I should say, and so far they have liked the audio version, which makes me happy. I’m planning to focus more on audio marketing when Book 2 is released. Doing this also prompted me to start listening to audiobooks, with the result that sometimes I’m immersed in “reading” three books…

Short story collection: I shied away from writing short stories until I attended a 5-day writing retreat with author Steve Barnes. He had us write a short story every night and turn it in the next day for critiquing. That cut off my tendency to turn everything into a novel. At the time, I felt cranky about it. I didn’t want to write anything short. But one of those stories became the first fiction I sold to a paying market. Now I enjoy writing short stories when I take breaks from longer projects

Time management: I’m one of those people who likes charts and graphs. So when I first draft, I set a goal of writing a certain number of words per day, five days per week, and each day I hit the word count and write it on my chart, and everything else shifts around that. But I’m more a rewriter than writer (which is why no one ever gets to see my first drafts). It’s harder to track progress on rewriting, so I split my time in 50-minute increments and set a timer.

Giveaways: I’ve offered The Awakening free on Kindle for limited time periods. That helped me get more Amazon reviews, plus more people added it to their Goodreads shelves. Once I’d released Book 2, The Unbelievers, its sales always jumped after free days for The Awakening. I’ve also done Goodreads giveaways of signed paperbacks. That prompted more people to add the books to their shelves.

Reader list: I created and edit a monthly e-newsletter with book and/or a movie reviews in the M.O.S.T. (mystery, occult, suspense, and thriller) genres, including a historical mystery recommendation by a friend who loves that genre and contributes a column...Now I put email list sign ups out at book release parties and appearances, and I usually do a drawing of everyone who signs up for a free book (paperback or audio) or an Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card. Plus I have links on my blog, website, and in my ebooks.

Next: k. The third book in the series, Hunt for the Enemy, which brings the main story arc to a close, is now very nearly finished. I’m hoping to release it during winter 2015…

Social media has been very important to me. It’s been a great way for me to connect with readers and other writers and it’s nice to have a very open forum where I can chat to readers rather than just being a name behind a book they read. It does take a lot of time though.

Personal appearances: I’m hoping for some in my local area (West Midlands, UK) over the coming weeks and I’ll always post such events on my social media profiles. I’ve done numerous events recently from radio, TV to book festivals and I’m always on the lookout for more.

Covers: For Dance with the Enemy I left it initially in the hands of a designer. I just knew I wanted something striking yet simple. For Rise of the Enemy, I thought about it a bit more myself. I wanted to keep a similar styling but use a different colour scheme to emphasise the setting of the story (which is in a Siberian winter).

Free books: The problem with marketing is that it’s hard to figure out exactly which specific elements were a success and which weren’t. I’ve run numerous giveaways whether on Goodreads or to my email list or on social media. I think the Goodreads ones in particular can be very effective as the “to-read” stats for my books sky-rocketed when the giveaways were first released.

Reader list: I have an email list but it’s nowhere near as big as my twitter following. I’ve found it hard to convert readers onto the list though I do get a steady trickle coming through from people following the links at the end of the books and I always get a bit of a jump whenever I promote the fact that the list exists e.g. on my twitter posts.

Blogging: Finding time is always the problem! I do a lot of my blogs in the evening, after writing. Or, when I’ve got a particular back-log, I’ll set aside a full day to catching up on blogs and interviews etc - like today, as I’m writing this! I have two other blogs/interviews to do today plus a load of organising for the upcoming free promotion (and some gardening!) so I’m not planning on doing any real writing today!

Reviews: For the release of Rise of the Enemy I listed the books on NetGalley to get initial reviews. I’m not sure yet whether I was pleased with the return I got or not as it’s a very costly service for a standalone author. I also have a small list of bloggers/reviewers who I’ve met, largely through social media, who I sent copies to for reviews (both ebooks and hardcopies) and that list is growing all the time.

Author Description:
P.C. Zick began her writing career in 1998 as a journalist. She's won various awards for her essays, columns, editorials, articles, and fiction. She describes herself as a "storyteller" no matter the genre.

She's published five works of fiction and two nonfiction books.

She was born in Michigan and moved to Florida in 1980. She finds the stories of Florida and its people and environment a rich base for her storytelling platform. Florida's quirky and abundant wildlife - both human and animal - supply her fiction with tales almost too weird to be believable.

Her fiction contains the elements most dear to her heart, ranging from love to the environment. In her novels, she advances the cause for wildlife conservation and energy conservation. She believes in living lightly upon this earth with love, laughter, and passion.

"This is one of the most exciting times to be an author," Ms. Zick says. "I'm honored to be a part of the revolution in writing and publishing."
