Amy Metz - Next Big Thing from the HBS Author's Spotlight

I was tagged by Author James Moushon to participate in The Next Big Thing blog hop. James's next big thing is Game of Fire. The Next Big Thing hops from blog to blog where authors share their current works in progress. Each author answers a few questions about their next book and then tags more authors. James was tagged by Katherine Logan, whose WIP is The Last Macklenna. I hope you will check out their blogs and their work.

Author Description:

Questions and Answers with the Author

What is the working title of your next book?

Heroes & Hooligans In Goose Pimple Junction

Where did the idea come from for the book?

My head. I wanted to write a second book in the Goose Pimple Junction series, and this one came straight out of my head.

What genre does your book fall under?

It’s a mystery, but you could also classify it as a cozy mystery or even chick lit (just don't tell the men who have read it and liked it).

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?

Well, the main characters in Heroes & Hooligans are Johnny Butterfield and Martha Maye Applewhite. I think Patrick Warburton would be great as Johnny even though he’s a little older than the character, I think he could pull it off. Maybe Sandra Bullock for Martha Maye? Betty White would be great for Louetta’s sister, Ima Jean. Maybe Kathy Bates would be a good Louetta, and Walton Goggins might be good for Lenny.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Heroes & Hooligans in Goose Pimple Junction is a humorous southern mystery.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I’m not sure yet.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

I have no idea! Maybe a year or so?

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Well, some of my favorites are: Murder On The First Day of Christmas by Billie Thomas Buried by Buttercups (Peggy Lee Garden Mysteries) by Joyce Lavene My Heart May Be Broken, but My Hair Still Looks Great by Dixie Cash For more, check out my Listmania! http://tinyurl.com/a9tsl5l list on Amazon.com

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

My imaginary friends inspired me to write this second book in a series.

What else about the book might pique the reader's interest?

Heroes & Hooligans picks up four months after the murder and mayhem of the first book. Now the zany town is troubled by a serial thief, a stalker, and a murderer, making the new police chief busier than a set of jumper cables at a redneck picnic. The same old gang from the first book will be back, and they’re joined by some new folks too: Louetta’s sister, Ima Jean, comes to live with her. She’s just had a stroke and frequently talks in commercial slogans. Honey Winchester is a friend, co-worker, and neighbor of Martha Maye’s, as well as the town flirt. And Lenny Applewhite is Martha Maye’s estranged husband and the town tomcat.

Author's Book List
Murder & Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction
An Old Mystery In 1932, John Hobb, father of four, is a witness to a bank robbery. He identifies the robbers and testifies against them. They are later pardoned by the governor. In 1935, Hobb is found in his idling car by the side of the road, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The circumstances surrounding his death are a mystery, and the killer is unknown. In 2010, John Hobb's murder is still unsolved when Tess Tremaine moves into his former house. She finds a job at the local bookstore, which is owned by Lou Stafford, the youngest daughter of John Hobb. During renovations to the old house, Tess finds a mysterious old key, labeled "trunk." Mayhem ensues when she attempts to find the owner of the key: Her house is broken into twice, but nothing is taken; she finds cigarette butts and footprints outside a bedroom window; she gets threatening phone calls and ominous messages in the mail; she and a friend are attacked on the street. All of this has the opposite reaction than was intended--it doesn't scare her away, it strengthens her resolve to find John Hobb's murderer.

HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of February 2013

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. We have seventeen authors this time around.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

I have added a new feature to the HBS Author's Spotlight, The Showcase. I have included those authors in this class. Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month.

Social Media: I strongly believe that proper use of social media can help an author’s career… it’s about building a community with readers and other authors.

Next Book: Mistress of the Ages is the working title of the next book of the First Empress series…

Social media - and Twitter, in particular - has been absolutely critical to my success, so much so, in fact, that I wouldn't be where I am today without it.

Covers: I've created all my covers myself, using stock royalty free images from Dreamstime.com that I swirl around in Photoshop.

Book Trailers: I have to confess that the one book trailer that's out there was really only an entertaining experiment. I have no idea if it's helped sales or not…

eBooks: Kindle books, in particular - have changed *everything*. I wouldn't be here right now… I'd still be back at my old job, slowly going insane.

Free Books: The truth of it is that, when used effectively, it's hard to beat freebies as a promotional tool.

Author Blog: I'm sure I sell at least some books through my web site, but it's really just there as a place for folks to go who want to find out more about me and my work.

Next Book: Hovering Above a Homicide - The main characters in the book will return in a new mystery scheduled to be released June 1.

Social Media: … provides so much information now to so many readers that having a social media plan is critical.

Book Tours: … my mystery was picked up by Costco which is featuring it in its Northwest warehouses. I’ve been on a Costco tour recently.

Time Management: I’m not good at promoting myself – probably because of my straight news background – and have to push myself to do it all the time.

eBooks: Most of the business books came out before Ebooks became popular, so the marketing aspect has changed dramatically.

Social Media: There is no doubt that social media plays a heavy roll in the success of a book or any product these days. If used correctly you can strengthen and expand your readership.

Book Trailers: I have the most fantastic book trailer for Dreaming in Darkness. It was a trailer that I think raised the bar for trailers… Trailers can be expensive and it is difficult to measure their success.

Support Groups: My biggest support group is all the other authors at Winter Goose Publishing. They are wonderful and talented authors…

Human Trafficking Cause: There are so many ways to get involved from donations to just being aware and educating our children. Depending on your desire to participate, there is a way for you to contribute.

Time Management: The hardest part comes after you finish your book, but you do have to finish it. Marketing is so important that I make sure to spend ample time on social media and building my readership each day.

Free Books: I’ve had tremendous success with Goodreads giveaways. The Kindle free days have found some success but the market is now flooded and the competition is great to even be successful giving it away free.

Next Book: I am currently working on the 4th book in the Danvers series which will feature Declan and Ella. I am looking at a late spring/summer release.

Social Media: I have formed so many relationships there (Facebook) and find the reader feedback and support invaluable.

Book Covers: Penguin Publishing … wanted a recognizable theme for all of the books in the series and I love the results.

Free Books: Amazon's KDP Select which allowed the author to have so many free days per month. I found this to be a great way, especially in a series, to get your name and story out there. I recommend that every new self-published author try that first.

Next Book: HOLLOW BONES … out in September … featuring Caitlyn Tierney.

Social Media: Facebook and my Thrillers with Heart newsletter are the two main ways I reach my readers.

Book Covers Design: I've tried to keep my name branding consistent throughout my cover design … and that's something I discuss with my cover artists. Then I usually give them an idea of the emotional impact I want a cover to have and they zero in on a visual way to evoke that emotion.

eBooks: Ebooks and the ability for authors to self-publish them has changed everything. I first began to self-publish ebooks the end of 2009 simply because my NYC publisher couldn't get my books out fast enough and my fans were clamoring for more. I realized that with ebooks I could keep them happy, get my name out to new readers, and even use the ebooks as giveaways and promotional tools…

I created the Buy a Book, Make a Difference charity.
It's tied to sales rankings of my books, so if my readers push a book high in the rankings or onto a bestseller list, the charity gets more money.

Next Book: Stay of Execution is planned for late 2013.

Social Media: When I first investigated self-publishing, I read a great deal about how authors should build a platform using social media. Although I still believe this is true, authors need to recognize that their platform is as much about learning from other writers as it is about trying to reach new readers.

Appearances: I absolutely do interviews, speaking and personal appearances. Most of my interviews have been online but I regularly accept invitations to appear at book clubs.

Book Clubs: In some ways, I have two book clubs. My personal book club is private and they were the first to read A Guilty Mind - long before it was published. What I like about using my book club to "test" my books is that they are all discriminating readers.

Author's Blog: My primary goal with my blog is to take what I've learned and share it with others.

Next Book: The Phoenix War, which will be the fourth in the series, should come out this summer.

Great Book Covers: I credit Sam Keiser for the beautiful cover art that my books enjoy. He's easy to work with, works swiftly, and is willing to take my ideas and run with them …

Handling a Writing and School Schedule: Simple, I neglect school and sort-of doing the bare minimum to get by adequately. That's an exaggeration but there's some truth to it

Free Books: If I have any success it is 100% because I've been able to give the first book in my series away for free. This serves as a kind of demo that allows readers to give my stories a chance…

Next Book: Secrets - released SOON.

Social Media: I’m fortunate that I’ve grown a sizeable social media following fairly quickly… I latched onto this idea of being ‘content rich’. I upload fresh content several times each week…

Book Trailer: I created all of the trailers using a standard digital camera for stills and video. I used simple software such as Windows Movie Maker and Audible for editing and adding special effects such as captions and transitions.

Writer's Group: San Francisco Writer’s Critique Group on Potrero Hill – Goodreads group. This is a very talented group of folks whose opinions I really value.

Free Books: I think readers appreciate the free book. It often prompts them to pick up another title because they enjoyed it. My main goal in promotion is to gain visibility…

Next Book: Operation Stonehenge

Book Idea: It’s a natural progression from my debut novel, The Pyramid Legacy,

Synopsis: The evidence is unquestionable - The architects of The Great Pyramid and Stonehenge were related!

Both the debut novel, and Operation Stonehenge, are out and out fiction. However, I’ve woven a number of facts together with the fiction. The challenge I set for readers is to identify which is which. Finally, can the reader solve the puzzles Ben Anderson faces, before he does? (assuming, of course, he in fact does!)

Next Book: Writing About Villains

Book Idea: My other writing craft books for authors (Writing Fight Scenes, The Word-Loss Diet, Writing Scary Scenes) are bestsellers, and I want to expand the series.

Synopsis: Learn to create the kind of villain your readers love to hate and remember for the rest of their lives.

Interesting: The book is practical and shows how to create great villains step by step. It helps with characterisation, motivation, dialogue, types of villain, using archetypal energies, avoiding stereotypes, how to write the final confrontation between hero and villain, making the villain scary, and more.

Next Book: The Last MacKlenna

Synopsis: I’ll give you two loglines. One tells Meredith’s story and the other tells Elliott’s:

The president of a Napa Valley winery has a detailed to-do list to follow to insure the successful launch of her new vine but breast cancer and a handsome Scotsman complicate her life.

Interesting: Meredith has breast cancer. When I started the story my sister-in-law had been battling the disease for ten years. After finishing the first draft, my other two sisters-in-law had mastectomies. At that point, the story became even more personal and for a while, I couldn’t write. My sister-in-law, Sally Manning, lost her courageous battle on October 29, 2012. This book is dedicated to her valiant fight.

Next Book: Game Of Fire

Idea: We all know the CIA really has a domestic operation. And we know it is hidden from the public’s eye and it has no rules it has to go by. That fact takes the lead in this Jonathon Stone Mystery.

Synopsis: An explosion and fire rocks South California and it is quickly determined its arson. The timing of the incident was special because it interrupts the Tet New Year’s Festival and Parade in Little Saigon, just east of Long Beach.

I lived in Southern California for a period of time and I was always intrigued by the diversity of the people in the area and their traditions.

We had a Military Weapon’s Station right in the middle of town and that helped feed the image of something unknown being next door. This place was designated the Wal-Mart of the Pacific Fleet because of all the different types of weapons stored there.

Interesting: The book’s setting is in a large Vietnamese area of Orange County, California and it takes place during the Chinese New Year. The Chinese year of the story was the Year of the ‘Fire Pig’.

Author Description:

John W. Huffman was born in Hemphill, Texas, attended elementary school in Pineland, Texas, junior high and high school in Jasper, Texas, and graduated summa cum laude from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida.

John enlisted in the Army Airborne in 1966 and served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam, the first as a private, and subsequently a sergeant, with Alpha Company, 1/27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, in 1966-67, and the second as an officer/aviator with the 120th Aviation Company in 1972-73. He retired as a major in 1986 with three Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, sixteen Air Medals, one Army Commendation Medal, two Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Medals, and various other service and campaign ribbons.

Upon retiring from the Army, John launched a real estate sales and management company, SouthCorp Properties, Inc., which he still owns and operates today, and previously owned and operated seven NASCAR speedways in five states, created an automobile racing and sanctioning body, the American Racing Association, and developed three touring series.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

First things first. Rumor has it that you have another book on the horizon called ‘Eyes of the Blind’. Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease.

Also, I see you are currently working on ‘When A Rebel Comes Home’. Any idea when we will get a look at that.

Eyes of the Blind is in the final stages of completion, and hopefully will be out in April or May of this year. It is a sequel to America's Diplomats, The Road To Attleboro, and continues the story of Jay Sharpe and the survivors of that battle for the remainder of their tour. When A Rebel Comes Home is currently in the outline stages, and I hope to complete it in the next twelve months.

I see you have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been to your writing success? How much has it changed your book launch process?

Social media is very important to all of my books. I have found it to be a fast, accurate, and cost effective way to promote and communicate with readers.

Do you do book signing, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when is your next place where your readers can see you?

I constantly attend book signings, give interviews, speak and make personal appearances. My next appearance will be on March 15 at Frances Marion University in Florence, South Carolina.

You have great covers. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

Designing my covers is a fun project that I look forward to with each publication. I use a graphic designer, Whitney Brock, out of California, and basically give her a theme I would like to see on the cover. She will submit samples to me of her concept, and after tweaking the samples; I will then submit two or three of the final designs on my Facebook page and ask for feedback. From this process a cover is selected and final adjustments made based on the feedback.

Have you created a book trailer for any of your books to promote your books online?

The only book trailer I've done is for Tiger Woman, but I plan to do more.

I see you belong to the IAN. We have featured several of the authors from that group. What other support groups do you belong too? Do they help with writing, marketing and the publishing process?

I belong to approximately 30 different writers groups and workshops, but do all of my own marketing and publishing, and never submit my writing for peer review.

With your busy schedule, how do you have time to keep up with your followers? Between your book writing, Real Estate Agency, marketing, family and all the other things that can get in your way, how do you manage your time? Do you have a set schedule or do your sort of play it by ear?

I recently sold my real estate company and moved from South Carolina to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to allow more time for writing and interacting with my readers. I adhere to a set schedule of writing four days a week and spending quality time with my family the other three days. I post daily on twitter and Facebook, and on occasion, take time off to travel.

You’re an author that has bridged the gap to ebooks. Has the advent of ebooks changed anything in your writing, your marketing and the relationship with your readers and fans?

Ebooks, in my opinion, is the best thing that has happened to book publishing in the last hundred years. I promote heavily online and attribute 80% of my sales, both foreign and domestic, to ebooks.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in other types of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

I have participated in very few book giveaways, with the exception of charities, and can't say that I've had a lot of success with them. Mostly, I just grind out the promotion process in conventional channels.

In reviewing your books, I noticed you rely on your background of racing and military. How do you manage your plots, characters and timelines to keep your stories going? Do you do a lot of research for your books?

Mostly I write "what I know" in my books, and base each one on experiences I have observed or personally lived...changing characters and events to weave a good story line as necessary.

Searching For Leah
Clint Long, desperately seeking a sponsor for his race team, impulsively stops by an old mystic to have his fortune read and unwittingly sparks a euphoric reaction when she discovers he by chance has eleven direct genetic links to their twelve sacred tribes, which the governing Council of their Craft has been trying to forge for over five thousand years.

Unbeknownst to him, the colorful members of Council hastily adapt a plan to gather his seed within a maiden from the remaining twelfth tribe, whose newborn persona is destined by the ancient ones to usher in a new age of enlightenment for all mankind. For this noble quest, they select Leah as the vessel to bear his child, a naïve young woman raised in the swamps of Louisiana and home-schooled by her mother with virtually no contact with the outside world. When Leah’s godmother mistakenly casts a love spell, Clint whisks Leah out of her protected environment into his fast-paced world while Council valiantly tries to keep up and subtly protect the unborn child.

America's Diplomats, The Road to Attleboro
Winner of the 2011 Military Fiction National Indie Excellence Award.

America's Diplomats powerfully portrays the Vietnam conflict's initial phase when patriotism still reigned supreme. All wars spawn simple heroes from youthful naivety as boy-soldiers evolve into weathered combat veterans. Young Jay Sharpe is no exception.

Born into a long lineage of patriots, he never questions his generation's call to arms. Filled with wanderlust and rarely sure of what he wants, but knowing precisely what he does not want, a predictable marriage to his high school sweetheart and looming job at the local sawmill in his small hometown after graduation, he gallops off to the nearest Army recruiter to become Private John Joseph Sharpe, All-American hero. After rigorous training, he emerges as one of the Army's elite paratroopers and eagerly sails off to Vietnam and the golden opportunities awaiting him there--a near fatal encounter with the 9th North Vietnamese "Ghost" Regiment in the legendary battle of Attleboro, the largest land engagement of the entire war effort.

His gripping tale of the trials of a soldier in our nation's most controversial confrontation is a graphic chronicle of love, hate, hope, and despair in an era of uncertainty and misdirection.

Above All
A Finalist in the Action/Adventure Fiction category of the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

Above All is a lighthearted action-adventure historical fiction set in the waning stages of the Vietnam War which pits a consummate warrior against the political strangulation that rendered our armed forces virtually ineffective. It is a comical but sordid tale of a roguish gunship pilot and his nemesis, a petty commanding officer, who loathe each other at first sight. As fierce adversaries they encompass the chaos of that era accompanied by a coven of nurses and a clandestine army of misfits who portray the best - and worst - of our country during that painful affair. Their saga is one of love and lust, hope and despair, valor and cowardice awash in a deluge of demoralizing apathy as they face the bitter end of that conflict.

The Baron of Clayhill
A 2010 Finalist in the Popular Fiction category of the National Indie Excellence Book Awards.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in 1967 East Texas, this novel mixes a soupçon of the supernatural in with the mundane. Twenty-year old Paul Henry has just been released from the Army. Physically healed from the wounds he suffered in Viet Nam, he still suffers from deep psychic wounds and a radically changed outlook, his "enlistment bonus." Having gone through the classic lost-his-girl-to-his-best-friend scenario, estranged from family and friends and not knowing what he's going to do with the rest of his life, Paul decides to visit the grave of his father, a man he never knew.

Paul's father, John Allison Henry, supposedly committed suicide on the day his son was born. Paul's impulsive decision to find out more about his father sets him on a journey among strangers in a strange land, where he will find happiness and horror, love and hate, the power of determined effort, and the force of capricious fate.

The author does an excellent job of keeping you enthralled, making you hope all will be well, yet causing you to fear that all will come crashing down. Like a skilled poker player, this story keeps its cards close to its vest until all the bets are in, the hand is called, and boom! - the cards are laid on the table for all to see. After the emotions stirred up by the showdown abate, one thought is left - wow! Deal another hand!

Tiger Woman
The 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Award Winner in the Action-Adventure Fiction Category.

Tiger Woman depicts a brief period of unconventional warfare that tests the boundaries of humanity in a haunting tale of unremitting evil no ordinary soldier ever trains to face. Captain Christen, a dedicated intelligence officer with the 25th Infantry Division, directs an all-out hunt for a roguish female who leads a small guerrilla force with chilling efficiency as she employs depraved acts of psychological warfare to instill terror in those she opposes. This historical fiction provides graphic detail of the bitter struggle between the hunter by day who becomes the hunted by night as the pendulum of power swings to and fro with the rising and setting sun. Tiger Woman infuses great passion into a previously undisclosed segment of the Vietnam conflict in a manner never before portrayed by bringing into sharp focus the female soldiers who supported the communist cause so efficiently.
